Museums which pay attention to education for sustainability
2006
This paper analyzes the co…
A quantitative analysis of Educational Data through the Comparison between Hierarchical and Not-Hierarchical Clustering
2017
Many research papers have studied the problem of taking a set of data and separating it into subgroups through the methods of Cluster Analysis. However, the variables and parameters involved in Cluster Analysis have not always been outlined and criticized, especially in the field of Science Education. Moreover, in the field of Science Education, a comparison between two different Clustering methods is not discussed in the literature. Conceptions of students about modeling in physic are investigated by using an open-ended questionnaire. The questionnaire is analyzed through Clustering methods. The clustering results obtained by using the two methods are compared and show a good coherence bet…
Guidance Provided by Teacher and Simulation for Inquiry-Based Learning: a Case Study
2016
Current research indicates that inquiry-based learning should be guided in order to achieve optimal learning outcomes. The need for guidance is even greater when simulations are used because of their high information content and the difficulty of extracting information from them. Previous research on guidance for learning with simulations has concentrated on guidance provided by the simulation. Little research has been done on the role of the teacher in guiding learners with inquiry-based activities using simulations. This descriptive study focuses on guidance provided during small group investigations; pre-service teachers (n = 8) guided third and fifth graders using a particular simulatio…
Is Digital Literacy Improving Science Education?
2015
Mass media, and especially digital media, have become an important tool of literacy and have increased their use in classrooms for educational purposes. This is of great interest in scientific literacy and Brossard and Shanahan (2006) developed an instrument to evaluate the understanding of scientific terms and basic science concepts. In this quantitative study we analyse the relationship between Spanish digital mass media and scientific literacy in pre-service pri- mary teachers (N = 189). Results showed that these university students have a term knowledge level lower than the one found by Brossard and Shanahan in the USA. On the other hand, conceptual knowledge was not correlated at all to t…
Bringing pupils' learning closer to a scientific construction of knowledge: A permanent feature in innovations in science teaching
1994
In this article we intend to show that the idea of linking science learning to the way of doing science constitutes a permanent feature, although not always explicit, in innovations in science teaching. A thread which, in our opinion, has shown itself to be fruitful, even through its wrong avenues, and that is being reinforced nowadays by the emerging constructivist paradigm and by the implications of the contemporary philosophy of science in science education.
Elementary electrostatic phenomena: Historical hindrances and students’ difficulties1
2004
Abstract Categories of explanation for electrostatic phenomena derived from a brief historical survey are used to interpret the responses of students aged 17 to 21 to questionnaire items describing five experimental situations. Most of the students’ interpretations of electrostatic phenomena used ideas about the electric nature of matter that recalled pre‐Newtonian explanations.
Technology as 'Applied Science': a Serious Misconception that Reinforces Distorted and Impoverished Views of Science
2005
The current consideration of technology as "applied science", this is to say, as something that comes "after" science, justifies the lack of attention paid to technology in science education. In our paper we question this simplistic view of the science-tecnology relationship, historically rooted in the unequal appreciation of intellectual and manual work, and we try to show how the absense of the technological dimension in science education contributes to a naive and distorted view of science which deeply affects the necessary scientific and technological literacy of all citizens. Meeting the Discipline-Culture Framework of Physics Knowledge: A Teaching Experience in Italian Secondary School
2014
The paper deals with physics teaching/learning in high school. An investigation in three upper secondary school classes in Italy explored the reactions of students to a structuring lecture on optics within the discipline-culture (DC) framework that organises physics knowledge around four interrelated fundamental theories of light. The lecture presented optics as an unfolding conceptual discourse of physicists regarding the nature of light. Along with the knowledge constructed in a school course of a scientific lyceum, the students provided epistemological comments, displaying their perception of physics knowledge presented in the classroom. Students’ views and knowledge were investigated by…
The Dynamics of Perspective in Quantum Physics: An Analysis in the Context of Teacher Education
2021
Debates on the philosophical interpretations of quantum physics have motivated a renewed interest in how secondary and lower undergraduate students interpret quantum phenomena. In an attempt to contribute to this effort, this paper examines the dynamics of perspec tive in quantum physics in the context of teacher education. The goal of the study is to investigate how students (N = 36) from a Master's Degree in Secondary Education Teacher Training in Spain negotiate perspective as they participate in small-group discussions of quantum physics topics. This study focuses on the wave-particle duality, superposition of states, and the calculation of probabilities for two-state systems. The metho…
