Trending topics in orthodontics research during the last three decades: A longitudinal bibliometric study on the top‐cited articles

2020

Objective: To perform a bibliometric analysis on the top-cited articles over the last three decades from 1989 to 2018, using a longitudinal set-up, in order to analyse how articles' features have evolved over time. Setting and sample population: A sample of 312 articles divided into three subgroups of 104 top-cited articles for each decade were included. The h-index value was used to determine the sample size. Materials and methods: The articles were identified through a search in the category "dentistry oral surgery and medicine" of the Web of Science database. The information relative to the articles was collected. Descriptive statistics was used to describe the articles and the journals;…

La Ley General de Educación y la Pedagogía. Reencuentro y señal

2021

The Colonial Voyages

2021

In the preceding chapter, we introduced readers to the complex and dense interplay between scientific expeditions, which were moved by scientific interests, and colonialism. In this chapter, we focus on the ways and morphologies of colonial voyages to draw new borders of colonial geographies. Of course, some might speculate both chapters overlap, but one continues the discussion the other leaves. In the introductory chapter, we discussed the imperial machine (and the cultural matrix) that invented, fabricated, and packaged the non-Western “Other” to legitimate the would-be European supremacy. Now it is time to review how Western reasoning develops the gaze to explain and expropriate the new…

Models, information and meaning

2018

Abstract There has recently been an explosion of formal models of signaling, which have been developed in order to learn about different aspects of meaning. This paper discusses whether that success can also be used to provide an original naturalistic theory of meaning in terms of information or some related notion. In particular, it argues that, although these models can teach us a lot about different aspects of content, at the moment they fail to support the idea that meaning just is some kind of information. As an alternative, I suggest a more modest approach to the relationship between the informational notions used in models and semantic properties in the natural world.

FIRST experiment: Fragmentation of Ions Relevant for Space and Therapy

2013

International audience; Nuclear fragmentation processes are relevant in different fields of basic research and applied physics and are of particular interest for tumor therapy and for space radiation protection applications. The FIRST (Fragmentation of Ions Relevant for Space and Therapy) experiment at SIS accelerator of GSI laboratory in Darmstadt, has been designed for the measurement of different ions fragmentation cross sections at different energies between 100 and 1000 MeV/nucleon. The experiment is performed by an international collaboration made of institutions from Germany, France, Italy and Spain. The experimental apparatus is partly based on an already existing setup made of the …

Augmented lectures: Benefits of supporting physics teaching with the theatre

2019

Abstract Young generations are less and less interested in studying STEM subjects. For this reason, numerous studies have strongly suggested a change in the methods scientific knowledge is developed in the learners, through the use of alternative and more creative strategies. In recent decades a strong interaction between scientific subjects and the arts has been established by means of theatre. The objective is to bring science to students and the public in ways that are engaging, instructive, artistic and, always, content-driven: the medium is the arts; the message is the joy of science. When we talk about Physics in a theatre show, are we only making a good dissemination or are we also t…

Términos persas en escritos anatómicos árabes

1995

The. A. explains the meaning of some Iranian technical words, which appear in anatomical Arab works. They are interesting, not only because they are nearly unknown, but also because they are an evidence of the influence of Iranian culture on the rise of Arabian scientific medicine, and so an encouragement to further investigation on this subject.

An Anthropological Insight on the Commonalities between Tourism and Archaeology

2019

Over the years, archaeology maturated towards something else than a scientific discipline. Archaeological sites are culturally showed as emerging and recycled tourist attractions (Robb 1998; Bateman 2006; Rowan & Baram 2004; Karlsson & Gustafsson, 2006). At a closer look, tourism is understood as a leisure activity which is enrooted in the needs of relaxing and evasion while archaeology -as a knowledge platform which is based on scientific method- explores the history of ancient cultures. This raises a more than interesting question respecting the commonalities and differences between archaeology and tourism. To some extent, archaeologists find ancient relics and objects whi…

Baltic - Nordic Universities in the EU Research and Innovation Programme Horizon 2020

2020

This study looks at the research education in universities and is aimed at assessment of the Baltic – Nordic Higher Education Establishments’ participation to the EU Horizon 2020 Framework Programme on basis of the open source data. The author analyses university interest in Horizon 2020 support for doctoral students’ training, correlation between university PhD intensity and involvement in research projects, correlation between Horizon 2020 success and World university rankings, participation comparison of  Nordic universities versus the Baltic ones. A brief overview of universities’ commitment to Sustainable development goals is also included. The study concludes that Nordic universities …
