COMBINED USE OF INNOVATIVE PASSIVE CONTROL DEVICES AND CONVENTIONAL BASE ISOLATION STRATEGIES

2021

This manuscript contains the main part of my research performed in the last three years at the Department of Engineering, University of Palermo, at the Department of Basic Sciences in Engineering Sciences (Unit of Applied Mechanics), University of Innsbruck, Austria and at the company FIP Mec, Selvazzano Dentro, Padova. Within the research framework of Structural Control, this dissertation proposes novel passive control strategies to mitigate the dynamic response of base isolated structural systems. Among the several types of devices proposed in literature, Tuned Mass Dampers and Tuned Liquid Column Dampers are undoubtedly the most widely employed vibration control devices for coupling with…

Bòvedas tabicadas: experimental and numerical analysis

2008

A class of thin vaults, the so-called “bovedas tabicadas”, which represent one of the most common Spanish traditional building techniques at the end of XIX century are studied here, treating the relevant analysis problem through a numerical, as well as an experimental, approach. At first the problem is studied by searching for the behaviour of the material effecting suitable experiments. Once the constitutive behaviour of the materials and the structural elements are experimentally characterized, a semi inverse method for the identification of the optimum mechanical parameters to assign to an equivalent homogeneous ideal material through analysis reproducing the executed experimental tests …

Physico-chemical and mechanical characterization of in-situ forming xyloglucan gels incorporating a growth factor to promote cartilage reconstruction

2016

Abstract The development of growth factors is very promising in the field of tissue regeneration but specifically designed formulations have to be developed in order to enable such new biological entities (NBEs). In particular, the range of therapeutic concentrations is usually very low compared to other active proteins and the confinement in the target site can be of crucial importance. In-situ forming scaffolds are very promising solutions for minimally invasive intervention in cartilage reconstruction and targeting of NBEs. In this work injectable, in-situ forming gels of a temperature responsive partially degalactosylated xyloglucan (Deg-XG) incorporating the growth factor FGF-18 are fo…

Does hospital competition harm equity? Evidence from the English National Health Service

2011

Increasing evidence shows that hospital competition under fixed prices can improve quality and reduce cost. Concerns remain, however, that competition may undermine socio-economic equity in the utilisation of care. We test this hypothesis in the context of the pro-competition reforms of the English National Health Service progressively introduced from 2004 to 2006. We use a panel of 32,482 English small areas followed from 2003 to 2008 and a difference in differences approach. The effect of competition on equity is identified by the interaction between market structure, small area income deprivation and year. We find a negative association between market competition and elective admissions …

Indentation test as a tool for monitoring the solidification process during injection molding

2003

An inline method for monitoring the solidi-fication process during the injection molding of semicrystalline polymers is demonstrated. The method has been applied to various poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(buthylene terephthalate) (PBT) samples. The technique is based on a simple device by which an additional ejector pin is pushed onto the injection-molded part with a fixed force at different times during the solidification phase while the mold remains closed. The residual deformation (the so-called indentation depth) due to the applied load is measured offline after ejection. By the performance of indentation at different times during the cooling phase, an indentation depth prof…

Electrochemical oxidation of tetramethoxy precursor as a key step for the synthesis of coenzyme Q10

2007

The feasibility of electrosynthesis of coenzyme Q10 (1) by electrooxidation of tetramethoxy precursor (2) has been investigated at carbon, Pt and BDD anodes in a divided cell. The process strongly depends on the applied potential, anode material and water content of the solvent. At carbon anodes in CH3CN/CH2Cl2 + 0.15 M Bu4NBF4 at proper operative conditions high faradic efficiency (>60%) and excellent selectivity (95–97%) of the target product were obtained. Keywords: Electrosynthesis, Coenzyme Q10, Anodic oxidation

Pyrolysed cork-geopolymer composites: A novel and sustainable EMI shielding building material

2019

Abstract In this investigation, and for the first time, pyrolysed sustainable cork was used to produce waste-based geopolymer-cork composites with enhanced electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties. The influence of the pyrolysed cork amount and the geopolymer porosity on the EMI shielding ability of the composites was studied. The maximum total shielding effectiveness (SET) values achieved by these novel building materials (−13.8 to −15.9 dB) are equal to any other reported geopolymer microwave (MW) absorbers over the X-band, despite containing much lower carbon content. In addition, our composites were produced using an industrial waste (biomass fly ash) as raw material and …
