Genes of Secondary Metabolism: Differential Expression in Plants and In Vitro Cultures and Functional Expression in Genetically Transformed Microorga…

1989

Plants had to develop strategies for defence against microorganisms and herbivores during evolution. The evolution of chemical defence, i.e. the production of the so-called secondary products can be regarded as one of the most important means in this context (Swain 1977, Rosenthal and Janzen 1979, Wink 1988). Since secondary metabolites evolved as biologically active compounds, it is not surprising that man has found a use for many of them, e.g. as medicinal agents, flavours, spices, colours, stimulants, hallucinogens, or pesticides. As a consequence, quite a number of secondary plant products are of economical importance.

Artificial Chromosomes to Explore and to Exploit Biosynthetic Capabilities of Actinomycetes

2012

Actinomycetes are an important source of biologically active compounds, like antibiotics, antitumor agents, and immunosuppressors. Genome sequencing is revealing that this class of microorganisms has larger genomes relative to other bacteria and uses a considerable fraction of its coding capacity (5–10%) for the production of mostly cryptic secondary metabolites. To access actinomycetes biosynthetic capabilities or to improve the pharmacokinetic properties and production yields of these chemically complex compounds, genetic manipulation of the producer strains can be performed. Heterologous expression in amenable hosts can be useful to exploit and to explore the genetic potential of actinom…

Assessing the metacognitive reading awareness of Finnish high school students

2015

Kyky lukea akateemisia tekstejä englannin kielellä on entistä tärkeämpi taito kolmannen asteen koulutuksessa. Pohja tälle taidolle muodostuu toisen asteen koulutuksessa, eli useimmiten lukiossa. Toisen kielen – useimmiten siis englannin – opetussuunnitelman neljäs kurssi keskittyy lukustrategioiden opettamiseen. Lukustrategioita opetetaan, koska niillä on tutkitusti merkitystä etenkin haastavissa toisen kielen teksteissä, joita oppilaat tulevat kohtaamaan. ”Strategia” ymmärretään usein tietoiseksi prosessiksi, jossa lukija on tietoinen käyttäessään strategiaa. Tietoisuuden ollessa mukana puhutaan metakognitiivisista lukustrategioista. Näiden strategioiden käyttöön on luotu kysely, jota tämä…

The role of transportation and its involved sources of energy in the environmental assessment of marble producing sites

2018

Marble is acquiring large popularity as building material. Since building materials are now required to be characterized by high energy and environmental performances, marble is entailed to fulfill top-level requirements. About its environmental performances an important European Decision establishes criteria for the award of the Community eco-label to this material. Unfortunately, this Decision is focused on mining and processing activities, seemingly neglecting marble transport. In contrast, this phase affects the whole working chain because it releases (pollutant) emissions and involves the use of primary and, in case, secondary energy sources. Here, the focus is on the role played by tr…

Un ataque a la educación inclusiva en la Enseñanza Secundaria. Limitaciones de la formación inicial del profesorado en España

2015

Inclusive education is hard to implement in secondary schools. Probably, one of the determining factors lies in teachers' initial training that determines their attitude, identity and professional practice. This research analyses the initial teacher education programmes for Secondary Education, Higher Secondary Education, called bachillerato in Spain, and Vocational and Artistic training in the five best valued Spanish universities in the education field, according to the ranking I-UGR, after the European convergence process in the European Higher Education Area. The study analyses the national regulations that govern this training. A quantitative study was conducted to examine the number o…

Universal formulas for characteristic classes on the Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces

2007

This article can be seen as a sequel to the first author's article ``Chern classes of the tangent bundle on the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane'', where he calculates the total Chern class of the Hilbert schemes of points on the affine plane by proving a result on the existence of certain universal formulas expressing characteristic classes on the Hilbert schemes in term of Nakajima's creation operators. The purpose of this work is (at least) two-fold. First of all, we clarify the notion of ``universality'' of certain formulas about the cohomology of the Hilbert schemes by defining a universal algebra of creation operators. This helps us to reformulate and extend a lot of the f…

2021

In the publications of Freire's trip, errors are detected that makes invisible both its impact and those who made it possible. An analysis of the documentation, 6 interviews with people who made the trip possible, 6 with professionals and 2 with family members in Valencia who are transforming their schools and 2 dialogical observations have been carried out. The results make it clear: 1) Those who proposed this trip both to Freire and to the Regional Ministry are Flecha and Jesús Gomez 'Pato'. 2) The reason is the approval by the Valencian Parliament of the Law on Adult Education, whose 'Report and draft for its preliminary project' had been entrusted to Flecha, who was hired to elaborate i…

Administración liberal y corrupción política: el conflicto del Real Colegio de San Pablo con el Instituto Provincial de Valencia

2015

The present paper examines the Spanish public schools inside the liberal educative system doing a detailed analysis of the Real Colegio de San Pablo of Valencia. The article studies this Real Colegio in order to point out the conflict provoked by political corruption, since Juan Bravo Murillo, a Spanish minister, appointed relatives to direction posts against the desires of Antonio Gil de Zárate, the founder of the Spanish liberal educative system. In this case, the struggle between personal interest of politicians and the necessities of the new and modern administration were related to the problematic issue of the model of high schools established by the State: elitist public schools or op…
