Soluble serum beta 2-microglobulin has been thought to result from membrane shedding by activated T-lymphocytes. This hypothesis could explain the increase of beta 2-microglobulin serum levels during virally induced mononucleosis, but not elevated levels as observed in other virally induced and in malignant diseases. In this paper we demonstrate that beta 2-microglobulin is a true secretory protein, and that its synthesis in hepatocytes is modulated by IFNs but not by IL-1. AbstractNative serum C1q, the collagenous-like subcomponent of the first component of complement, is not recognized by polyclonal anti-collagen type II antibodies. However, when purified C1q was subjected to limited proteolysis by collagenase it showed antigenic cross-reactivity with collagen type II. We investigated the connection between the C1q solid-phase binding assay (C1q SPBA) and double-stranded DNA antibodies, and analyzed the immune complex material in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) sera. Comparison with a new monoclonal assay for C1q-bearing immune complexes (the 242G3 assay) revealed that the immune complexes in SLE bind specifically to solid-phase C1q, and not to fluid-phase C1q. The C1q solid-phase binding activity sedimented as 7S IgG, was insensitive to DNase treatment, and could be selectively absorbed by C1q-coupled beads and by bovine serum albumin-anti-bovine serum albumin C1q beads, but not by DNA. This field study investigated the release of testosterone and cortisol of a vicarious winning experience in Spanish fans watching the finals between Spain and the Netherlands in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer. Spanish fans (n = 50) watched the match with friends or family in a public place or at home and also participated in a control condition. Consistent with hypotheses, results revealed that testosterone and cortisol levels were higher when watching the match than on a control day. The aim of this study was to establish the impact of physical activity on the rhythm of salivary cortisol secretion in elite female basketball players over one week. Sleep EEG, nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) and nocturnal endocrine activity were studied in 3 male control subjects during placebo, under trimipramine (TR) and after withdrawal. TR did not change the sleep structure. NPT activity tended to increase under TR. Nocturnal plasma cortisol levels decreased markedly while the early morning rise of cortisol appeared delayed under 200 mg TR. After withdrawal the changes of the cortisol secretion rebounded. Nocturnal secretion of GH, testosterone, LH and FSH remained unaffected, but plasma prolactin levels increased under TR and returned to normalcy after cessation. In previous studies we have shown that insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-II stimulates basal as well as ACTH-induced cortisol secretion from bovine adrenocortical cells more potently than IGF-I. The steroidogenic effect of both, IGF-I and IGF-II, is mediated through the IGF-I receptor and modified by locally produced IGF binding proteins. Further studies demonstrate that bovine adrenocortical cells do synthesize IGFBP-1 to -4 and that their secretion is regulated differentially by IGFs and ACTH.
