Modeling of the Achilles Subtendons and Their Interactions in a Framework of the Absolute Nodal Coordinate Formulation
2022
Experimental results have revealed the sophisticated Achilles tendon (AT) structure, including its material properties and complex geometry. The latter incorporates a twisted design and composite construction consisting of three subtendons. Each of them has a nonstandard cross-section. All these factors make the AT deformation analysis computationally demanding. Generally, 3D finite solid elements are used to develop models for AT because they can discretize almost any shape, providing reliable results. However, they also require dense discretization in all three dimensions, leading to a high computational cost. One way to reduce degrees of freedom is the utilization of finite beam elements…
The modelling of the cathode sheath of an electrical arc in vacuum
2003
This paper presents a simple model of the fragment in the cathode electrical arc root taking into account the physical phenomena occuring on the cathode surface and the sheath. The goal is the obtainment of characteristics values of the heat flux, the electrons, and atoms density in the sheath. Computation is carried out on a one-dimensional model with a coupling between the equation obtained in the sheath and an enthalpy model of the cathode to describe the temperature evolution. In the modelling, we introduce a friction zone above the sheath edge to characterize the heavy particle interactions. Numerical simulation shows that the ionic friction phenomenon deriving from ion–atom collision …
Sex differences in the management of patients with acute coronary syndrome: A population-based ecological cross-sectional study in Spain
2021
Abstract Introduction and objectives Despite evidence of a reduction in the incidence and mortality of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), some studies have highlighted differences in outcomes between men and women. We aimed to explore sex differences in the management and treatment of patients with ACS in Spain. Methods This ecological cross-sectional study combined ACS data from 10 Spanish registries (54 centres). Meta-regression analysis was performed using aggregated data of baseline characteristics, interventional procedures, treatments, and events that occurred during hospitalization and one-year follow-up. Results Aggregated data from 34 605 patients (75.1% men) was included. ST-segment e…
Binostril versus mononostril approaches in endoscopic transsphenoidal pituitary surgery: clinical evaluation and cadaver study.
2016
OBJECTIVE Over the past 2 decades, endoscopy has become an integral part of the surgical repertoire for skull base procedures. The present clinical evaluation and cadaver study compare binostril and mononostril endoscopic transnasal approaches and the surgical techniques involved. METHODS Forty patients with pituitary adenomas were treated with either binostril or mononostril endoscopic surgery. Neurosurgical, endocrinological, ophthalmological, and neuroradiological examinations were performed. Ten cadaver specimens were prepared, and surgical aspects of the preparation and neuroradiological examination were documented. RESULTS In the clinical evaluation, 0° optics were optimal in the nas…
Standardized long-term follow-up after endoscopic resection of large, nonpedunculated colorectal lesions: a prospective two-center study.
2014
Endoscopic removal of large, nonpedunculated colorectal lesions is challenging. Long-term outcome data based on standardized protocols, including detailed inspection of the resection site, are scarce. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the safety and efficacy of endoscopic resection (ER) of large, nonpedunculated lesions (LNLs;20 mm) and to assess the long-term recurrence rate afterward.A total of 243 consecutive patients (141 men, 102 women) with 252 adenomas (20 mm) was followed up using a standardized protocol after complete ER. After endoscopic treatment, the patients received standardized follow-up examinations after 3-6 months and 12 months. The postpolypectomy scar was re…
Immunoperoxidase Staining of Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsies of Renal Cell Carcinoma Using Tumor-Specific Monoclonal Antibody
1987
In 30 nephrectomy specimens, fine needle aspiration biopsies (FNAB) were performed both in the tumor and in the macroscopically normal part of the kidney: 18 were well differentiated renal cell carcinoma (RCC), 6 were moderately differentiated RCC, 4 were poorly differentiated RCC, and 2 were oncocytomas. FNAB was also performed in a bone metastasis of RCC. FNAB materials were stained using the immunoperoxidase method with RCC-specific monoclonal antibody and were compared with the staining of frozen sections. In all cases where tumor-antigen expression could be demonstrated in the frozen sections, a FNAB had already proven positive. There were only 2 false-negative cases where sufficient c…
Physical activity and fat-free mass during growth and in later life.
2021
ABSTRACT Background Physical activity may be a way to increase and maintain fat-free mass (FFM) in later life, similar to the prevention of fractures by increasing peak bone mass. Objectives A study is presented of the association between FFM and physical activity in relation to age. Methods In a cross-sectional study, FFM was analyzed in relation to physical activity in a large participant group as compiled in the International Atomic Energy Agency Doubly Labeled Water database. The database included 2000 participants, age 3–96 y, with measurements of total energy expenditure (TEE) and resting energy expenditure (REE) to allow calculation of physical activity level (PAL = TEE/REE), and cal…
The economic impact of rectal cancer: A population-based study in Italy list of authors
2021
Costs of cancer care are increasing worldwide, and sustainability of cancer burden is critical. In this study, the economic impact of rectal cancer on the Italian healthcare system, measured as public healthcare expenditure related to investigation and treatment of rectal cancer patients is estimated. A cross-sectional cohort of 9358 rectal cancer patients is linked, on an individual basis, to claims associated to rectal cancer diagnosis and treatments. Costs refer mainly to years 2010&ndash
Influence of Guideline Operationalization on Youth Activity Prevalence in the International Children's Accelerometry Database
2022
Introduction: The United Kingdom and World Health Organization recently changed their youth physical activity (PA) guidelines from 60 minutes of moderate-vigorous PA (MVPA) every day, to an average of 60 minutes of MVPA per day, over a week. The changes are based on expert opinion due to insufficient evidence comparing health outcomes associated with different guideline definitions. Further, inconsistent guideline operationalization impairs understanding of physical inactivity prevalence. This study used the International Children’s Accelerometry Database to compare approaches to calculating PA compliance among youth and associations with health indicators. Methods: Cross-sectional accelero…
Participation in organized sports is associated with decreased likelihood of unhealthy lifestyle habits in adolescents
2018
Adolescence is a pivotal time for investing in both present and future health. Thus, it is important to identify arenas for promoting positive adolescent health behaviors and preventing negative ones. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between organized sports participation (OSP) and a broad range of lifestyle habits in Norwegian adolescents. A comprehensive survey was completed by 13 269 junior high and high school students in southern Norway. Multivariable binary logistic regression models, adjusted for gender, age, and parental education, were used to investigate the associations between OSP and adolescent substance use, dietary habits, physical activity level, pas…
