Multivariate geophysical survey to detect a shallow fault zone in a landfill project area

An integrated analysis of 2D high-resolution shallow seismic refraction tomographies (SRT) and electrical resistivity tomographies (ERT) has been carried out along a slope where the presence of a fault zone was assumed. It was also applied a post-inversion k-means cluster analysis of the P-wave velocity, the density of the seismic rays and the electrical resistivity of the interpretation models. The feasibility of partial least squares (PLS) regression modeling of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectra of estuarine sediments has been evaluated as a tool for rapid trace element content monitoring. Multivariate PLS calibration models were developed to predict the concentration of Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, V and Zn in sediments collected from different locations across the estuary of the Nerbioi-Ibaizabal River (Metropolitan Bilbao, Bay of Biscay, Basque Country). Abstract Halloysite clay is a natural nanomaterial that is attracting a growing interest in colloidal science. The halloysite aqueous dispersion stability is a key aspect for the configuration of a purification protocol as well as to establish the durability of a formulation. A physico-chemical study demonstrated the role of ionic strength and nanotube characteristic sizes on the sedimentation behavior. Sm-Nd dating of Fig Tree clay minerals of the Barberton greenstone belt, South Africa.

Sm-Nd isotopic data from carbonate-derived clay minerals of the 3.22-3.25 Ga Fig Tree Group, Barberton greenstone belt, South Africa, form a linear array corresponding to an age of 3102 +/- 64 Ma, making these minerals the oldest dated clays on Earth. The obtained age is 120-160 m.y. younger than the depositional age determined by zircon geochronology. Nd model ages for the clays range from approximately 3.39 to 3.44 Ga and almost cover the age variation of the Barberton greenstone belt rocks, consistent with independent evidence that the clay minerals are derived from material of the belt. Morphological determination of the phototrophic community composition of biological soil crusts in coastal sand dunes in northern Germany

This dataset comprises the microbial community composition of biological soil crusts in north-German sand dunes. For this we obtained enrichment cultures of phototrophic microorganisms, by placing fragments of biocrusts of the same Petri dishes as used for sequencing, in Petri dishes with Bold Basal (1N BBM) agarized medium (Bischoff and Bold 1963). Cultures were grown under standard laboratory conditions: with a 12-hour alteration of light and dark phases and irradiation of 25 μmol photons m-2 s-1 at a temperature 20 ± 5 ºС. A Mössbauer spectroscopic study of salt lake sediments from Qaidam basin

Mossbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry and chemical fractionation have been used to study the clay smaples in sediments of Charhan playa and Qinghai lake. The spectral components of the Mossbauer spectra of the samples are attributed to Fe2+ ions in chlorite and siderite, Fe3+ ions in clay minerals and hematite, and partly in amorphous ferric hydroxides. The essential difference in the mineral composition of the sediments of both lakes is the presence of siderite in the samples of Char han playa, whereas it is absent in the samples of Qinghai lake. The fraction of the amorphous ferric hydroxides is higher in the sediments of Qinghai lake. Total Fe2+/Fe3+ ratios increase with sediment …

We present morphological and stratigraphic results coming from surveys acquired in a NNW-SSE trending submarine depression (Marettimo Valley) located in the Egadi Islands (western Sicily offshore). In this area the seafloor is characterized by both depositional and erosional features generated under a variety of sedimentary processes. We identified two seismic facies units that are correlatable to: A) the progradation of shallow water (coastal to offshore) deposits during forced-regression sedimentary process, and B) contourite drifts emplaced by geostrophic currents through the Marettimo Valley.
