Zygotic and nucellar embryo survival following dehydration and cryopreservation of citrus intact seeds.

2004

A cryopreservation procedure by dehydration and direct immersion in liquid nitrogen was developed for seeds of four polyembryonic Citrus species, and the sexual or nucellar origin of the recovered seedlings was investigated. Seeds of three species could be desiccated in a sterile air flow to 16 percent (C. sinensis) or 10 percent (C. aurantium and C. limon) moisture content with a negligible reduction in germination levels. Differently, the germinability of C. deliciosa seeds dropped to 50 percent after drying to 15 percent moisture content. Following dehydration treatments, a reduction in the average number of seedlings per germinated seed was always observed. However, all four species ben…

Synthesis And Sorptive Properties Of Dodecasil 1 H With An Acessible Pore System

1994

Abstract The synthesis of Dodecasil 1H was studied in the system SiO2/1-adamantylamine/NH3/water with the objective of controlling the particle size and the morphology of the crystals. Since nucleation occurs in a very early stage of the synthesis, the heating rate to the final temperature have a strong influence on both parameters. Using seed crystals and such a heating programme, the expensive template 1-adamantylamine can be reduced to so small amounts, that a nearly template free pore system is achieved. The emptiness of the pore system was demonstrated from adsorption measurement using He and H2.

Use of stevia and chia seeds for the formulation of traditional and vegan artisanal ice cream

2021

Abstract Gelato is the name of the Italian-style artisanal ice cream, a nutritious product widely consumed in different parts of the world. Due to the high content in simple sugars, ice cream should be consumed moderately by diabetic patient. This research aimed to create artisanal ice cream, using Stevia rebaudiana, a plant well known for its sweet taste and its hypoglycemic effect. Traditional and vegan ice cream were formulated using stevia and chia seeds, in order to obtain products with appreciable rheological, textural and sensorial properties. Physical and sensorial properties of the ice cream formulation containing milk protein (traditional) or vegan substitute, were evaluated. Resu…

The possibilities of using broadleaf cattail seeds (Typha latifolia L.) as super absorbents for removing aromatic hydrocarbons (BTEX) from an aqueous…

2018

Sorption of oil-related products (including mainly the propellants) is the very basic process that counteracts spreading these types of pollution into environment. Plenty of synthetic substances (including the monoaromatic hydrocarbons) are both from the surface and underground waters. The aim of this study was to present the research’s results on the possibilities of using the broadleaf cattail (Typha latifolia L.) seeds as a sorbent of monoaromatic hydrocarbons from an aqueous solution. In order to increase sorptive capacity, the seeds biomass was submitted for the process of mercerizing in diversified time and temperature in water and the NaOH solution. The removal of benzene, toluene, e…

Abscisic acid and desiccation-dependent expression of a novel putative SNF5-type chromatin-remodeling gene in Pisum sativum.

2006

Snf5-like proteins are components of multiprotein chromatin remodeling complexes involved in the ATP-dependent alteration of DNA-histone contacts. Mostly described in yeast and animals, the only plant SNF5-like gene characterized so far has been BSH from Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. We report the cloning and characterization of expression of a SNF5-like gene from pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Lincoln), which has been designated PsSNF5. Southern analysis showed a single copy of the gene in the pea genome. The cDNA contained a 723bp open reading frame encoding a 240 amino acid protein of 27.4kDa with a potential nuclear localization signal. PsSNF5 protein sequence closely resembled BSH, with …

Impact of polyploidy on fertility variation of Mediterranean Arundo L. (Poaceae)

2015

International audience; Failure of seed production in the genus Arundo L. (Poaceae) is often attributed to polyploidy. This study tested the impact of two ploidy levels (2n = 12 and 18x) on the fertility of four Mediterranean Arundo. Viable pollen was screened from its production to its germination, and seed occurrence was monitored in admixture or isolated conditions. In addition, insights on restructuration of polyploid genornes were analysed using molecular cytogenetics. Our results show that high ploidy levels do not automatically induce failure of sexual reproduction. The two ploidy levels are able to produce viable pollen and seed set depending on species and cultural conditions. The …

Development-dependent changes in the tight DNA-protein complexes of barley on chromosome and gene level

2008

Abstract Background The tightly bound to DNA proteins (TBPs) is a protein group that remains attached to DNA with covalent or non-covalent bonds after its deproteinisation. The functional role of this group is as yet not completely understood. The main goal of this study was to evaluate tissue specific changes in the TBP distribution in barley genes and chromosomes in different phases of shoot and seed development. We have: 1. investigated the TBP distribution along Amy32b and Bmy1 genes encoding low pI α-amylase A and endosperm specific β-amylase correspondingly using oligonucleotide DNA arrays; 2. characterized the polypeptide spectrum of TBP and proteins with affinity to TBP-associated D…

Nonlinear dynamics of a two-photon Fabry–Pérot laser

2000

Abstract The steady-state emission, stability and temporal dynamics of a single-mode two-photon laser with a Fabry–Perot cavity is investigated and compared with that of a ring-cavity laser. It is found that the Fabry–Perot cavity makes the laser less efficient than the ring cavity because of spatial hole burning, but the domain of stability is larger for the Fabry–Perot laser. The intensity and phase dynamics are numerically investigated and distinctive features are found in the phase dynamics as compared with one-photon lasers.

Tunable narrowband fiber laser with feedback based on whispering gallery mode resonances of a cylindrical microresonator.

2013

Narrowband filtering based on whispering gallery modes of a slightly tapered cylindrical optical microresonator was used to implement a tunable narrowband erbium-doped fiber laser. The laser can be set to emit a single longitudinal cavity mode (single frequency), although the laser cavity is a few meters long. In the single-frequency regime the laser can emit a maximum power of 0.380 mW with a linewidth <35 kHz and a signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 50 dB. Tunability is achieved by sliding the excitation point along the microcylinder. A tuning range of 1.16 nm is demonstrated.
