An Analysis of the Residential Segregation of Foreigners in the Municipality of Palermo
2021
Ethnic residential segregation in Italy is emerging as a key question, which will be crucial in the definition and implementation of both urban and social policies. This chapter focuses on this phenomenon in the Italian Metropolitan Area of Palermo. We use individual data for all the population residing in the city on 31 December 2011, organised by ethnicity and neighbourhood to describe the spatial distribution and the residential segregation of foreigners in the city, applying many different segregation measures. Results show that the top ten nationalities in Palermo are not uniformly spread across the different parts of the city but tend to cluster in specific areas. The most segregated …
Segregation in Drying Binary Colloidal Droplets
2019
When a colloidal suspension droplet evaporates from a solid surface, it leaves a characteristic deposit in the contact region. These deposits are common and important for many applications in printing, coating, or washing. By the use of superamphiphobic surfaces as a substrate, the contact area can be reduced so that evaporation is almost radially symmetric. While drying, the droplets maintain a nearly perfect spherical shape. Here, we exploit this phenomenon to fabricate supraparticles from bidisperse colloidal aqueous suspensions. The supraparticles have a core-shell morphology. The outer region is predominantly occupied by small colloids, forming a close-packed crystalline structure. Tow…
Ethnic segregation in a metropolitan area of Italy: the case of Palermo
2015
Vertical distribution of two sympatric labrid fishes in the Western Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic rocky subtidal: local shore topography does ma…
2011
Changes in the shore topography (e.g. slope) occur at a scale of hundreds of meters in several locations in the Lusitanian and the Mediterranean Sea provinces. We tested whether differences in the bottom inclination might affect the vertical distribution patterns of two sympatric coastal labrid fishes, the rainbow wrasse Coris julis and the ornate wrasse Thalassoma pavo. Visual censuses were used to determine the distribution and abundance of these labrid species in high (‡30 ) and low (£3 ) slope rocky substrates covered by brown macroalgae and at two different depths (shallow, 4–7 m, and deep 14–20 m). Pectoral fin aspect ratio was used as an estimate of swimming performance to potentiall…
Relazioni di genere e forme di dominio simbolico. Il caso della professione dell'assistente sociale
2019
The article highlights how the cultural models currently prevalent in some professional contexts in Italy - such as that of social workers - are still influenced by "male domination" (Bourdieu 1998). It develops a gender segregation that reproduces inequalities and asymmetries also in professional contexts traditionally female and imposes professional models based on "gender neutrality", which for the most part disregard relational and communicative skills fundamental in the care professions.
The relevance of psychosocial maps in the study of urban districts
2011
Abstract This pilot study proposes a social map-making method based on the link between the evaluation of the neighbourhoods and the populations residing in them. It was carried on a sample of residents of Dijon’s urban area, a French city (N = 99) divided into four groups, according to the geographical location (in the city / in the suburbs) and the social status (wealthy / disadvantaged) of their living space. The procedure is inspired by social representation gathering methods. Respondents were asked (1) to evaluate their own neighbourhood and others on two scales (social reputation and personal appreciation); (2) to evaluate populations on two similar scales; (3) to determine how these …
Colorectal cancer incidences in Lynch syndrome: a comparison of results from the prospective lynch syndrome database and the international mismatch r…
2022
Abstract Objective To compare colorectal cancer (CRC) incidences in carriers of pathogenic variants of the MMR genes in the PLSD and IMRC cohorts, of which only the former included mandatory colonoscopy surveillance for all participants. Methods CRC incidences were calculated in an intervention group comprising a cohort of confirmed carriers of pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in mismatch repair genes (path_MMR) followed prospectively by the Prospective Lynch Syndrome Database (PLSD). All had colonoscopy surveillance, with polypectomy when polyps were identified. Comparison was made with a retrospective cohort reported by the International Mismatch Repair Consortium (IMRC). This com…
“GENDER NEUTRALITY” E “GENDER SEGREGATION” IN UNA PROFESSIONE TRADIZIONALMENTE FEMMINILE
2016
A study of male and female managers between economic sectors of Latvia using EU-SILC survey
2020
Gender pay difference has been a widely recognized issue worldwide and one of the most popular research topics between various researchers, as there is still a relatively low share of women representing roles in senior management. The aim of this study is to analyse recent scientific findings on wage gap between male and female managers, and to explore possible occupation segregation in Latvia, as well as employment differences between male and female managers in the context of economic sectors and salary levels. Research methods used to prepare this particular study are analysis of the following: scientific publications, statistical data obtained from the database of European Union Statist…
New migration processes and new frontiers for linguistic research
2021
Recent migrations show unprecedented characteristics in terms of migratory routes, individual profiles of migrants and condition of isolation in arrival contexts. Combining sociolinguistic and linguistic perspectives, the article reconstructs the forms of linguistic contact between local and migrant populations in one of the main gateways to Europe, Palermo (Italy), and the specific conditions of local language acquisition by newcomers. It is argued that notions of (im)mobility and segregation must be included in migration-centred linguistic research
