Semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase, also known as vascular adhesion protein-1 (SSAO/VAP-1), is a membrane protein that is highly expressed in adipocytes and is also present on the endothelial cell surface where it is involved in leukocyte extravasation. Gelling and the collective dynamics in ferroelectric liquid crystals

Dielectric spectroscopy has been applied to investigate the dynamic behaviour of a ferroelectric liquid crystal in the smectic C* and smectic A phases confined in gel matrices of a fibre like (1D) or platelet like (2D) structure. These gel matrices were obtained from semicarbazide or bis-acylurea derivatives, which self assemble because of their H-bonding motif. The confinement strongly influences the magnitude of the spontaneous polarization and the collective fluctuations of the director detected as the Goldstone-mode. Gelation of smectic liquid crystal phases with photosensitive gel forming agents.

This paper studies the potential of 3 newly synthesized low molecular weight gelling agents (2 of them with azo groups) with the semicarbazide group as a H-bonding motif to gel the smectic phase of a commercial chiral smectic C material. To detect gelation two methods were used: the stabilization of the director pattern, which measures the interaction of the physical gel network with the LC-director, and the suppression of the onset of electrohydrodynamic instabilities, which measures the increase of viscosity. Semicarbazides as gel forming agents for common solvents and liquid crystals

This paper describes the synthesis of 14 new gelling agents with semicarbazide groups as H-bonding motifs and alkyl- and/or azobenzene side groups. They gel solvents like decaline, 1,2-dichlorobenzene and toluene and liquid crystalline mixtures. X-Ray structure analysis shows that the semicarbazides are connected by H-bonds, each molecule to four neighbours. As a result a ribbon is formed with a core of H-bonded semicarbazide groups and alkyl chains sticking to the side. IR measurements show an unchanged H-bonding motif in large crystals and in the gel fibres, even in LC-mixture. The behaviour of (E)- and (Z)-N,N-diphenylhydrazones and O-Methyloximes of 3-benzoyl-5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole has been studied. When refluxed in benzene, or in dioxane-water (1:1), the (Z)-N,N-diphenylhydrazone 8Z gave the indazole 11 or the substituted semicarbazide 12, respectively. The O-methyloxime 14Z did not give any rearrangement. A criticism of the oximation reaction of 3-benzoyl-5-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole is also reported.
