Cooling of the cerebellar interpositus nucleus abolishes somatosensory cortical learning-related activity in eyeblink conditioned rabbits.

2005

Nictitating membrane movement and multiple-unit activity in the somatosensory cortex were recorded from rabbits during paired (N = 6) and unpaired (N = 5) presentations of a tone conditioned stimulus (CS) and an airpuff unconditioned stimulus (US). A behavioural conditioned response (CR) to the CS and an accompanying neural response in the somatosensory cortex developed only in the paired group. Inactivation of the cerebellar interpositus nucleus abolished both the acquired CR and the accompanying neural response. However, the CS facilitated both behavioural and neural responses to the US during the inactivation. Thus, the absence of the CR could not be accounted for by the general inabilit…

Adaptive Mechanisms of Somatostatin-Positive Interneurons after Traumatic Brain Injury through a Switch of α Subunits in L-Type Voltage-Gated Calcium…

2021

Abstract Unilateral traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes cortical dysfunctions spreading to the primarily undamaged hemisphere. This phenomenon, called transhemispheric diaschisis, is mediated by an imbalance of glutamatergic versus GABAergic neurotransmission. This study investigated the role of GABAergic, somatostatin-positive (SST) interneurons in the contralateral hemisphere 72 h after unilateral TBI. The brain injury was induced to the primary motor/somatosensory cortex of glutamate decarboxylase 67–green fluorescent protein (GAD67-GFP) knock-in mice at postnatal days 19–21 under anesthesia in vivo. Single GFP+ interneurons of the undamaged, contralateral cortex were isolated by fluores…

Trigeminal Projections to the Dorsal Thalamus in a Lacertid Lizard, <i>Podarcis hispanica</i>

1998

Trigeminothalamic projections in the lizard <i>Podarcis hispanica </i>were investigated by means of biotinylated dextranamine (BDA) injections into different nuclei of the dorsal thalamus. Previous studies of lizards found a projection from the sensory trigeminal nuclei in the brainstem to the nuclei ventromedialis and ventrolateralis of the ventral thalamus. The present results show that, in addition to these projections to ventral thalamic nuclei, neurons of the nucleus of the descending tract and the principal sensory nucleus project contralaterally to the pretectal nucleus lentiformis thalami and bilaterally to the nucleus dorsolateralis anterior thalami of the dorsal thalam…

This commentary describes important findings of the article published by Sheroziya and Timofeev in The Journal of Neuroscience in 2015. The authors use moderate cortical temperature change, local cooling or heating of somatosensory cortex, to modulate excitable states of the brain. These changes, under physiological conditions, result from neuromodulation, as well as other network effects. They report that cooling disrupts thalamocortical slow oscillations and induces an activated cortical state, while mild heating has the opposite effect and increases slow-wave rhythmicity. We evaluate these findings regarding their utility for inducing and investigating cortical state fluctuations, compar…

Evaluation of olfactory intensity : comparative study of two methods

2004

Two experimental procedures recommended for the evaluation of the psychophysical characteristics of odorous compounds, olfactory matching with the 1-butanol scale and cross-modality matching with the finger span are compared. The intensity of ethyl butyrate and guaiacol solutions presented at four different concentration levels was evaluated by a panel of sixteen subjects over five repetitions using the two methods. Each stimulus was delivered to the subject from a Teflon bag through a nose-shaped glass sniffing port. The discrimination ability, repeatability, panel homogeneity and within-subject variability of the methods were assessed. Results indicate that with both methods, subjects wer…

Childhood Adversities and Adult Headache in Poland and Germany.

2015

Objective Various childhood adversities have been found to be associated with chronic pain in adulthood. However, associations were moderate in most studies, i.e. odds ratios (OR) were between one and two. Method An internet survey was performed in 508 Polish and 500 German subjects. A total of 19 childhood adversities were selected and their associations with headaches explored. Age, gender and country were included as potential confounders, as well as their two-way interaction with the risk factors. Results Two strong risk factors were identified. (1) A combined score for physical and emotional neglect showed an odds ratio (OR) of 2.78 (p < .002) to the frequency of headache in adulthood …

Identification and sensory evaluation of the character-impact compounds of goat cheese flavour

1996

1 SUMMARY The volatile compounds of various goat cheeses have been isolated in order to identify the character-impact odorants by a combination of instrumental analyses and sensory studies. Different extraction procedures have been studied in order to obtain a volatile fraction representative of the cheeses. The most representative extract, as determined by sensory evaluation, has been submitted to GC-MS and to GC-olfactometry, using the aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA) method. The volatile fatty acids have been found to be the most important compounds for the characteristic goat flavour. Among them, branched-chain fatty acids ( e.g. , 4-methyloctanoic and 4-ethyloctanoic) have been f…

Investigating semi-hard cheese aroma: Relationship between sensory profiles and gas chromatography-olfactometry data

2012

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate semi-hard cheese aroma by explaining sensory characteristics of cheese by gas chromatography–olfactometry (GC–O) data obtained via intensity ratings. Sensory (13 odour attributes) and GC–O profiles obtained by trained panels were carried out on seven non-processed semi-hard cheeses. Intensity scores for significant sensory attributes and significant odour-active compounds were analysed by partial least squares to determine correlations between these datasets. A total of nine sensory attributes and 15 odour-active molecules significantly discriminated between the cheeses. There were strong correlations (89% of the sensory data was explain…

Brain processing during mechanical hyperalgesia in complex regional pain syndrome: a functional MRI study.

2005

Complex Regional Pain Syndromes (CRPS) are characterized by a triad of sensory, motor and autonomic dysfunctions of still unknown origin. Pain and mechanical hyperalgesia are hallmarks of CRPS. There are several lines of evidence that central nervous system (CNS) changes are crucial for the development and maintenance of mechanical hyperalgesia. However, little is known about the cortical structures associated with the processing of hyperalgesia in pain patients. This study describes the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to delineate brain activations during pin-prick hyperalgesia in CRPS. Twelve patients, in whom previous quantitative sensory testing revealed the presence…
