A Geometric Algebra Based Distributional Model to Encode Sentences Semantics
2013
Word space models are used to encode the semantics of natural language elements by means of high dimensional vectors [23]. Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) methodology [15] is well known and widely used for its generalization properties. Despite of its good performance in several applications, the model induced by LSA ignores dynamic changes in sentences meaning that depend on the order of the words, because it is based on a bag of words analysis. In this chapter we present a technique that exploits LSA-based semantic spaces and geometric algebra in order to obtain a sub-symbolic encoding of sentences taking into account the words sequence in the sentence. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidel…
QuASIt: A Cognitive Inspired Approach to Question Answering for the Italian Language
2016
In this paper we present QuASIt, a Question Answering System for the Italian language, and the underlying cognitive architecture. The term cognitive is meant in the procedural semantics perspective, which states that the interpretation and/or production of a sentence requires the execution of some cognitive processes over both a perceptually grounded model of the world, and a linguistic knowledge acquired previously. We attempted to model these cognitive processes with the aim to make an artificial agent able both to understand and produce natural language sentences. The agent runs these processes on its inner domain representation using the linguistic knowledge also. In this sense, QuASIt …
An Innovative Statistical Tool for Automatic OWL-ERD Alignment
2016
Aligning two representations of the same domain with different expressiveness is a crucial topic in nowadays semantic web and big data research. OWL ontologies and Entity Relation Diagrams are the most widespread representations whose alignment allows for semantic data access via ontology interface, and ontology storing techniques. The term ""alignment" encompasses three different processes: OWL-to-ERD and ERD-to-OWL transformation, and OWL-ERD mapping. In this paper an innovative statistical tool is presented to accomplish all the three aspects of the alignment. The main idea relies on the use of a HMM to estimate the most likely ERD sentence that is stated in a suitable grammar, and corre…
Keyword Based Keyframe Extraction in Online Video Collections
2015
Keyframe extraction methods aim to find in a video sequence the most significant frames, according to specific criteria. In this paper we propose a new method to search, in a video database, for frames that are related to a given keyword, and to extract the best ones, according to a proposed quality factor. We first exploit a speech to text algorithm to extract automatic captions from all the video in a specific domain database. Then we select only those sequences (clips), whose captions include a given keyword, thus discarding a lot of information that is useless for our purposes. Each retrieved clip is then divided into shots, using a video segmentation method, that is based on the SURF d…
Sentence Induced Transformations in Conceptual Spaces
2008
The proposed work illustrates how "primitive concepts" can be automatically induced from a text corpus. The primitive concepts are identified by the orthonormal axis of a "conceptual" space induced by a methodology inspired to the latent semantic analysis approach. The methodology represents a natural language sentence by means of a set of rotations of an orthonormal basis in the "conceptual"space. The rotations, triggered by the sequence of words composing the sentence and realized by means of geometric algebra rotors, allow to highlight "conceptual" relations that can arise among the primitive concepts.
Probabilistic squares and hexagons of opposition under coherence
2017
Various semantics for studying the square of opposition and the hexagon of opposition have been proposed recently. We interpret sentences by imprecise (set-valued) probability assessments on a finite sequence of conditional events. We introduce the acceptability of a sentence within coherence-based probability theory. We analyze the relations of the square and of the hexagon in terms of acceptability. Then, we show how to construct probabilistic versions of the square and of the hexagon of opposition by forming suitable tripartitions of the set of all coherent assessments on a finite sequence of conditional events. Finally, as an application, we present new versions of the square and of the…

Abstract This large-scale eye-movement study (N = 164) investigated how students read short task assignments to complete information search problems and how their cognitive resources are associated with this reading behavior. These cognitive resources include information searching subskills, prior knowledge, verbal memory, reading fluency, and attentional difficulties. In this study, the task assignments consisted of four sentences. The first and last sentences provided context, while the second or third sentence was the relevant or irrelevant sentence under investigation. The results of a linear mixed-model and latent change score analyses showed the ubiquitous influence of reading fluency…
Delibazione speciale delle sentenze ecclesiastiche, ordine pubblico sostanziale e libertà religiosa tra ‘antiche’ suggestioni e ‘nuove’ problematich…

The mechanism of the exequatur of ecclesiastical sentences of matrimonial nullity provided for by the Agreement of Villa Madama has been subject for several years to an increasingly severe limitation of its operation, which blurs the sense, value and scope of its specialty. This is mainly due to an escalation in the pervasiveness of the control of substantive public order, simply unimaginable in 1984. The reference to Carlo F. Gabba’s scientific thought, especially where it deals with themes of ecclesiastical and international-privatistic importance, seems to provide surprising links and useful points for reflections which help, albeit ‘at a distance’, to focus on the deep reasons for this …
Elaboración de una versión reducida de las listas de frases en español (vr-LFE) para evaluar la percepción del habla con ruido
2014
Desing of a short version of the 'listas de frases en espa˜ (vr-LFE) (Spanish sentence lists) to evaluate speech perception in noise Abstract This article presents, a short version of the 'listas de frases en espa˜ (vr-LFE; ''Lists of Phrases in Spanish'') to evaluate speech perception in noise. The original version is an adaptation of the SPIN (Speech Perception in Noise) test for the English language. The original LFE consists of 6 lists, each of them including 25 high-predictability sentences and 25 low-predictability sentences. The difference between the correct recognition scores on the two types of sentences provides an estimation of the effective use of linguistic context (semantic, …
Do Patients With Depression Prefer Literal or Metaphorical Expressions for Internal States? Evidence From Sentence Completion and Elicited Production
2018
In everyday communication metaphoric expressions are frequently used to refer to abstract concepts, such as feelings or mental states. Patients with depression are said to prefer literal over figurative language, i.e. they may show a concreteness bias. Given that both emotional functioning and the processing of figurative language may be altered in this clinical population, our study aims at investigating whether and how these dysfunctions are reflected in the understanding and production of metaphorical expressions for internal states. We used two behavioral approaches: a sentence completion task and elicited speech production. In the first experiment, patients with ICD 10 depression (n = …
