Parietal subdural empyema as complication of acute odontogenic sinusitis: a case report

Introduction: To date intracranial complication caused by tooth extractions are extremely rare. In particular parietal subdural empyema of odontogenic origin has not been described. A literature review is presented here to emphasize the extreme rarity of this clinical entity. Case presentation: An 18-year-old Caucasian man with a history of dental extraction developed dysarthria, lethargy, purulent rhinorrhea, and fever. A modified prosthesis for the treatment of malignant esophagotracheal fistula

Esophagotracheal fistula is usually a sequela of irradiation or laser treatment of advanced carcinoma of the esophagus or the tracheobronchial tree. Resection of the tumor in these cases is not possible, and palliative bypass surgery is highly risky. The peroral placement of a prosthesis is less invasive, but conventional prostheses often fail to occlude the fistula. The authors regularly use an endoscopic multiple-diameter bougie for dilation. After dilation, a specially designed prosthesis is pushed through the tumor stenosis to block the fistula. This procedure can be done without general anesthesia. Health status of young children with cancer following discontinuation of therapy.

This paper reports late effects and health status of 198 children who had cancer or leukemia diagnosed under 2 years of age and their therapies electively withdrawn. This series (92 neuroblastoma (NBL), 57 Wilms' tumor (WT), 46 acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and 3 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma) was followed for 1-12 years after discontinuation of therapy. Thirty-three children were diagnosed before 1973, 92 between 1973 and 1977, and 73 after 1977 in 16 Italian Pediatric Oncology Centers. We describe the case of a six-year-old boy with concurrent staphylococcal septicaemia, herpes simplex virus encephalitis (HSVE), and haemorrhagic erosive oesophagitis. Due to guiding clinical and lab symptoms that suggested a diagnosis of staphylococcal sepsis with central nervous system (CNS) involvement, acyclovir treatment was discontinued a"er three days, but the lack of progress in neurological status, further lab tests, and CT and MRI imaging led the authors to consider possible HSV infection, and this diagnosis was con#rmed by PCR test. Present health status, complications, and development of long-term survivors of childhood cancer followed for more than 20 years in a single institution were reviewed. The departmental database was searched to identify patients diagnosed with childhood cancer and consequently treated between 1965 and 1978. A total of 124 (77%) long-term survivors participated on a voluntary basis in the study. A semi-standardized interview consisted of measures evaluating the present health condition, sequelae of treatment, second malignancies, intellectual development and presence of offspring of the former patients.
