Forms and Processes of Settlement Pressure on Natural Systems

2021

The process of urbanisation is considered one of the most significant anthropic alterations of the environmental framework, and the present study attempts to understand the spatial characteristics of urban growth and their impacts on envi- ronmental components in two metropolitan areas of Sicily. Such rapid and unplanned urbanisation in Sicily has increased during the last three decades causing severe pres- sure on various natural resources. In this situation, the level of fragmentation and isolation of natural areas risks becoming worse. The question assumes a particular relevance in those local territorial portions, such as some urban and periurban areas, presenting relevant conditions of…

The First Neolithic Occupation of La Cova del Randero (Pedreguer, Alicante, Spain)

2021

The excavations at “Cova del Randero” (Pedreguer, Alicante, Spain) began in 2007 within the programme of archaeological interventions of the Archaeological Museum of Alicante. The cavity, located in one of the valleys that connect the coast with the inland mountains, presents a wide sequence of occupations that begins in the Upper Palaeolithic and continues throughout the different phases of the Neolithic. The results of a multidisciplinary study, carried out in an archaeological context associated with the first Neolithic presence of the cavity, are presented here. This occupation is defined by a unique combustion structure to which a set of artefacts and biofacts are linked. This archaeol…

Commensality in the Late Bronze Age : places and practices : the contribution of recent discoveries in the south-east of the Paris Basin

2021

This doctoral dissertation uses data from the extensive preventive archaeological research carried out in the Upper Seine Valley in the south-east of the Paris Basin for at least five decades an area where Bronze Age and Early Iron Age sites are numerous and generally well preserved. The 2005 excavation by Inrap of the Villiers-sur-Seine site "le Gros Buisson", an "unusual" settlement dating to the final phase of the Late Bronze Age (9th century B.C.) is the main focus of this study, having shed new light on domestic contexts of this pivotal period. This fortified aristocratic dwelling is characterised by an organised plan, abundant artefacts, as well as the unusual consumption of young pig…

Temporal dynamic of biofilms enhances the settlement of the central-1 Mediterranean reef2 builder Dendropoma cristatum (Biondi, 1859)

2021

Research on marine invertebrate settlement provides baseline knowledge for restoration technique implementation, especially for biogenic engineers with limited dispersion ability. Previously, we determined that the maturity of a biofilm strongly enhances the settlement of the vermetid reef-builder Dendropoma cristatum . In order to elucidate which biofilm features support a higher settlement of this species, we analyse the structure and composition of a marine biofilm over time, through microscopic observations, eukaryotic and prokaryotic fingerprinting analyses and 16S rDNA Illumina sequencing. The vermetid settlement temporal increase matched with the higher biofilm extent on the substrat…

Reply to the comment on “Carbonate deposition and diagenesis in evaporitic environments: The evaporative and sulphur-bearing limestones during the se…

2016

Abstract Manzi et al. (in press) took the opportunity offered by our paper to repeat again all the set of ideas supporting an interpretative model of the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC), a model they assert to be valid for the whole Mediterranean basin. What emerges from reading this long comment may be summarized in one criticism of our article: we have not systematically applied their interpretative model to our data! The aim of our paper was not to promote their ideas, but to submit the results of more than 20 years of field studies and petrographical and geochemical analyses on Sicilian and Calabrian sequences of the Messinian “Calcare di Base”. It is out of our purpose to enumerate aga…

Gli editoriali di «In Architettura»

2010

Right from the title of the first editorial of «In Architettura », “La rivoluzione insediativa. I nuovi doveri”, stands as a petit manifeste for the affirmation of new positions in the field of architecture. To the uncontrolled settlement revolution that took place in the thirty years of intense post-war urban development, Culotta proposes to respond with another settlement revolution, that of architectural design. The intentions are clear and ambitious and, for the part of the world to which they refer, avant-garde. If it is true that in the settlement revolution the universe was „built but not designed“ then it will also be true that the universe can be designed. It must also be true that…

Architettura e agricoltura. Figure simboliche di incorporazione, 1960-1972

2022

2013

The park of the Madonie is an ideal place to reflect on contemporary forms of settlement. The Italian tendency to associate the protection of its cultural heritage with a return to the past is accompanied by the widespread belief that the past is the Paradise Lost, and that consequently, the identity of a place - along with that of its inhabitants - is to be found solely in its ancient history. In the case of the Madonie, its ‘glorious’ time goes back to a period when it was predominantly populated by sedentary shepherds and farmers. Today, however, we no longer think of an anthropized environment as being stable or immutable. Instead, we view it as the outcome of transcultural experiences …
