Simultaneous seismic wave clustering and registration

In this paper we introduce a simple procedure to identify clusters of multivariate waveforms based on a simultaneous assignation and alignment procedure. This approach is aimed at the identification of clusters of earthquakes, assuming that similarities between seismic events with respect to hypocentral parameters and focal mechanism correspond to similarities between waveforms of events. Therefore we define a distance measure between seismic curves in R^d d>=1, in order to interpret and better understand the main features of the generating seismic process.

The northern coast of Sicily and its offshore area represent a hinge zone between a sector of the Tyrrhenian
 Basin, characterized by the strongest crustal thinning, and the sector of the Sicilian belt which has emerged. This
 hinge zone is part of a wider W-E trending right-lateral shear zone, which has been affecting the Maghrebian

Extended fractional-order Jeffreys model of viscoelastic hydraulic cylinder

A novel modeling approach for viscoelastic hydraulic cylinders, with negligible inertial forces, is proposed, based on the extended fractional-order Jeffreys model. Analysis and physical reasoning for the parameter constraints and order of the fractional derivatives are provided. Comparison between the measured and computed frequency response functions and time domain transient response argues in favor of the proposed four-parameter fractional-order model.

In Candida parapsilosis the ATC1 Gene Encodes for an Acid Trehalase Involved in Trehalose Hydrolysis, Stress Resistance and Virulence

An ORF named CPAR2-208980 on contig 005809 was identified by screening a Candida parapsilosis genome data base. Its 67% identity with the acid trehalase sequence from C. albicans (ATC1) led us to designate it CpATC1. Homozygous mutants that lack acid trehalase activity were constructed by gene disruption at the two CpATC1 chromosomal alleles. Phenotypic characterization showed that atc1Δ null cells were unable to grow on exogenous trehalose as carbon source, and also displayed higher resistance to environmental challenges, such as saline exposure (1.2 M NaCl), heat shock (42°C) and both mild and severe oxidative stress (5 and 50 mM H2O2). Holes in the Dike: the global savings glut, U.S. house prices and the long shadow of banking deregulation

We explore empirically how capital inflows into the US and financial deregulation within the United States interacted in driving the run-up (and subsequent decline) in US housing prices over the period 1990-2010. To obtain an ex ante measure of financial liberalization, we focus on the history of interstate-banking deregulation during the 1980s, i.e. prior to the large net capital inflows into the US from China and other emerging economies. Our results suggest a long shadow of deregulation: in states that opened their banking markets to out-of-state banks earlier, house prices were more sensitive to capital inflows. The Sec61 translocon of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane forms an aqueous pore, allowing polypeptides to be transferred across or integrated into membranes. Protein translocation into the ER can occur co- and posttranslationally. In yeast, posttranslational translocation involves the heptameric translocase complex including its Sec62p and Sec63p subunits. The mammalian ER membrane contains orthologs of yeast Sec62p and Sec63p, but their function is poorly understood. Acquisition of thermotolerance in sea urchin embryos correlates with the synthesis and age of the heat shock proteins.

Preheating at 31 degrees C induces thermotolerance in Paracentrotus lividus embryos, which therefore become able to withstand 1-h treatment at the otherwise lethal temperature of 35 degrees C, and to develop normally. The acquisition of thermotolerance is positively correlated with the amount of heat shock proteins produced during the 31 degrees C treatment. Evidence is provided that the heat shock proteins, although present in the embryo for long periods after synthesis, lose their effect on thermotolerance within 3 h of the cessation of synthesis.
