Shock-Capturing methods: Well-Balanced Approximate Taylor and Semi-Implicit schemes
2022
Sequence of the new Drosophila melanogaster small heat-shock-related gene, lethal(2) essential for life [l(2)efl], at locus 59F4,5.
1995
Abstract In this study, we report the molecular cloning of a novel Drosophila melanogaster small heat-shock (HS)-homologous gene, l(2)efl, identified on the right arm of the second chromosome at locus 59F4,5. We describe the temporal expression of l(2)efl in the wild-type and present its structure. The deduced amino-acid sequence of the Efl protein shows significant homology to all known small HS proteins identified in Drosophila and vertebrates, and to mammalian α-crystallin.
Functional characterisation of the first HSP110 inhibitors.
2023
Heat shock proteins are molecular chaperones highly expressed in haematological malignancies. My laboratory has shown that the heat shock protein HSP110 is a new and important therapeutic target In colorectal cancer and in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. As there were no existing inhibitors of HSP110, a screening strategy of a chemical library was carried out and allowed the identification of two molecules capable of specifically inhibiting the chaperone activity of HSP110. My thesis objective was to characterise and functionally validate these newly identified molecules in diffuse large cell B lymphomas. I have shown that one of these molecules limits the interaction of HSP110 with the SYK signall…
Epidemiology of intensive care unit-acquired sepsis in Italy: Results of the SPIN-UTI network
2018
Background. Sepsis is the major cause of mortality from any infectious disease worldwide. Sepsis may be the result of a healthcare associated infection (HAI): the most frequent adverse events during care delivery especially in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). The main aim of the present study was to describe the epidemiology of ICU-acquired sepsis and related outcomes among patients enrolled in the framework of the Italian Nosocomial Infections Surveillance in ICUs - SPIN-UTI project. Study design. Prospective multicenter study. Methods. The SPIN-UTI network adopted the European protocols for patient-based HAI surveillance. Results. During the five editions of the SPIN-UTI project, from 2008 to…
Response of yeast cells to high glucose involves molecular and physiological differences when compared to other osmostress conditions.
2015
Yeast cells can be affected by several causes of osmotic stress, such as high salt, sorbitol or glucose concentrations. The last condition is particularly interesting during natural processes where this microorganism participates. Response to osmostress requires the HOG (High Osmolarity Glycerol) pathway and several transcription factors, including Hot1, which plays a key role in high glucose concentrations. In this work, we describe how the yeast response to osmotic stress shows differences in accordance with the stress agent responsible for it. Compared with other conditions, under high glucose stress, delocalization of MAPK (Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase) Hog1 is slower, induction of …
Alien at home: Adjustment strategies of students returning from a six-months over-sea's educational programme
2015
Abstract This paper assesses German students’ adjustment strategies after a six months expeditionary learning programme on high seas with intercultural encounters in Cuba and Costa Rica. A postal survey (N = 128, global response quote rg = .44) has been conducted with students having returned from four separate learning expeditions from 2008 to 2012. The students reports were coded in five categories, i.e. (1) reintegration narratives (RN), (2) perception of schooling (PoS), (3) self-perception (SP), (4) perceived programme effects (PPE), and (5) social context (SC), which were also quantified on a 5-point Likert-scale. By means of principal components analyses (PCA) and polynominal interpo…
Southern-Tyrrhenian seismicity in space-time-magnitude domain
2006
An analysis is conducted on a catalogue containing more than 2000 seismic events occurred in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea between 1988 and October 2002, as an attempt to characterise the main seismogenetic processes active in the area in space, time and magnitude domain by means of the parameters of phenomenological laws. We chose to adopt simple phenomenological models, since the low number of data did not allow to use more complex laws. The two main seismogenetic volumes present in the area were considered for the purpose of this work. The first includes a nearly homogeneous distribution of hypocentres in a NW steeply dipping layer as far as a…
Effect of sublethal concentrations of copper sulphate on seabreamSparus auratafingerlings
2007
The gilthead seabream is the most important Mediterranean aquacultured fish species. The main objective of this study was to investigate whether copper sulphate bath treatments used routinely in aquaculture have effects on important physiological functions of early life stages of the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata). Fingerlings (80-90 days, 0.27 ± 0.06 g) were exposed to copper sulphate baths at 0, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.5 mg L −1 during 24 h. Effects on the central nervous function were evaluated analysing brain acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE). Oxidative stress was assessed by the quantification of lipid peroxidation (LP). Heat shock proteins (HSP70) were used as a general response to chem…
4,5,6,7-Tetrahydro-isoxazolo-[4,5-c]-pyridines as a new class of cytotoxic Hsp90 inhibitors.
2014
Hsp90 is considered an interesting therapeutic target for anticancer drug development. Here we describe a new class of 4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-isoxazolo-[4,5-c]-pyridine compounds. A small library of derivatives has been synthesized and investigated. Some reported compounds show interesting properties combining both notable binding to Hsp90 and potent cell growth inhibitory activity. N-5 substitution with a 2,4 resorcinol carboxamide appears crucial for activity. Moreover, a derivative bearing a hydroxamic acid residue bound to C-3 amide portion was found to inhibit both Hsp90 and HDAC6.
