Dual compensation control-system for offshore logistic equipment
2012
In offshore applications and moreover in transports from ship-to-ship, the needs of highly sophisticated motion compensation solution are increasing. They consist of sensors, actuators and control units. To design the best mechatronic solution, it is necessary modeling the mechanical system in order to identify the transfer function and the dynamic behaviour of the system. Currently Active Heave Compensation system are widely used in order to compensate for heave vessel motion. between a vessel moving under sea state and a fixed base or viceversa. Several research project are ongoing in order to develop solution able to compensate undesired movements also in ship to ship offloading operatio…
Preliminary data concerning the morphology of a Calabrian Ionian margin area: Caulonia and Marina di Gioiosa canyons
2008
In the framework of the Vector National Italian Project (VulCost line), aimed to study the role of the morphology and the geology of the Ionian Calabrian margin in the coastline evolution, an oceanographic cruise was planned to collect geophysical data along two canyon systems: Caulonia and Marina di Gioiosa. The survey explored the continental shelf and slope from a depth of 15 m to more than 1150 m, using Multibeam Echosounder to investigate the seafloor topography. This work provides an outline of the erosive feature of the slope, shaped mostly by seasonal river input and by the connection to the structural and geological characteristics of the margin, made interesting by a narrow shelf …
Synapseudes Shiinoi Riggio, 1973, a Species of Tanaidacea Found in the Mediterranean
1977
During the bionomic survey carried out in the course of 1968 on the biogenic platform bordering the rocky shore of Mount Pellegrino in the Bay of Palermo (northwestern Sicily) some individuals of a species of Synapseudes Miller (1940) were found in samples of Tanaidacea taken during the winter at station no. 1. This find is of considerable interest as no Synapseudes species had hitherto been described from the Mediterranean, although the presence of this genus on the coast of southern France has been mentioned by Bellan-Santini (1962, 1969). Careful examination of the specimens revealed that they belonged to a new species, which was named after Prof. Sueo M. Shiino in gratitude for his kind…
The influence of business groups on board composition in offshore financial multinational enterprises
2023
Based on resource dependence theory we argue for an influence of business groups (BGs) on the board composition of constituent offshore financial multinational enterprises (FMNEs). Using a unique sample of 171 Caribbean FMNEs in an inter-island BG setting, we find BGs’ control in constituent firms to be indicative of the importance of the internal financing and intermediation within the group network. This control leads to a higher proportion of lawyers hired to the boards of directors in BG-constituent firms and supports the argument that lawyers provide skills in complex offshore regulatory frameworks that facilitate BGs’ optimal tax management. Furthermore, we observe that an increased a…
Status of vulnerable Cystoseira populations along the Italian infralittoral fringe, and relationships with environmental and anthropogenic variables
2018
We analyzed the occurrence and status of infralittoral fringe populations of Cystoseira spp. (Fucales) at thirteen rocky sites around the Italian coastline, and explored the relationships with relevant environmental and anthropogenic variables. We found Cystoseira populations at 11 sites: most were scattered and comprised monospecific stands of C. compressa, and only 6 sites also supported sparse specimens of either C. amentacea var. stricta or C. brachycarpa. Coastal human population density, Chlorophyll a seawater concentrations, sea surface temperature, annual range of sea surface temperature and wave fetch explained most of the variation of the status of C. compressa. We hypothesize a g…
A new shoreline change assessment approach for erosion management strategies
2022
Shoreline evolution studies are fundamental to assess the rate of beach accretion or retreatment. In the last years, researchers developed many methods with several techniques belonging to different disciplines and backgrounds. Nowadays, the Shoreline Change Analysis (SCA) is the most widespread method to assess shoreline evolution. In fact, the SCA is needed to perform management strategies able to respond to current erosion or potential future erosion problems. This paper presents a new approach using an automatic method for SCA with accuracy and speed improvements. Indeed, in the framework of the management of coastal erosion and to develop an adaptation plan to coastal hazards it is nec…
Vietnam as an emerging destination for offshore outsourcing of software development for finnish companies: A conceptual perspective
2009
Companies are constantly under pressure to produce software products more efficiently and within tight budgets. Offshore outsourcing has been seen as one solution to the dilemma, and lucrative outsourcing businesses have evolved in many countries, such as India, China and Russia. Vietnam is now emerging within this global outsourcing sector. This study investigates Vietnam as an offshore outsourcing destination for Finnish companies for developing their software products and related services. The research was undertaken by reviewing the literature of a) offshore outsourcing, b) offshore software production, c) information technology industry in developing countries, especially in Vietnam an…
Workshop on Global Outsourcing of Software Development
2010
Global outsourcing is a pertinent issue in today’s business world. Increasingly, software and non-software organizations from private and public sectors are attempting to develop some or all of their software through global outsourcing in order to enhance innovation, reduce development time and cost, improve quality and productivity, adapt to changing global economic and market conditions, to name a few. Global outsourcing is composed of near shore outsourcing (the software development work is done by the service provider in a nearby country) and offshore outsourcing (the development work is done in a very far away country). Global outsourcing is gaining significant importance, as it can pr…
