2,5-Dialkoxysubstituierte Oligo- und Poly(1,4-phenylenethenylen)e
1994
2,5-Dialkoxy Substituted Oligo- and Poly(1,4-phenyleneethenylene)s O-Alkylation and regioselective Rieche formylation of 2-methylhydroquinone (1) yields the 2,5-dialkoxy-4-methylbenzaldehydes 4a–j. The corresponding azomethines 5a–j enter in a strongly alkaline medium a selfcondensation reaction leading to the title compounds 6/7a–j. These conjugated oligomers and polymers possess highly regular structures with exclusively (E)-configurated double bonds. GPC, IR, 1H-, 13C-NMR and MS-FD measurements were used for their characterization. Somewhat different results were obtained for the similarly prepared Schiff base 5l which contains chlorine substituents in the side chains. Cleavage of hydrog…
Cylindrical Brush Polymers with Polysarcosine Side Chains: A Novel Biocompatible Carrier for Biomedical Applications
2015
Cylindrical brush polymers constitute promising polymeric drug delivery systems (nanoDDS). Because of the densely grafted side chains such structures may intrinsically exhibit little protein adsorption (“stealth” effect) while providing a large number of functional groups accessible for bioconjugation reactions. Polysarcosine (PSar) is a highly water-soluble, nonionic and nonimmunogenic polypeptoid based on the endogenous amino acid sarcosine (N-methyl glycine). Here we report on the synthesis, characterization and biocompatibility of cylindrical brush polymers with either polysarcosine side chains or poly-l-lysine-b-polysarcosine side chains. The latter leads to block copolypept(o)id based…
Microphase separation in bottlebrush polymers under poor-solvent conditions
2009
Molecular-dynamics simulations are used to study the structure of bottlebrush polymers with rigid backbones, for various grafting densities, side chain lengths, and varying solvent quality. While we confirm different states of the bottlebrush proposed by Sheiko et al. (Eur. Phys. J. E, 13 (2004) 125) we find that the transition between stretched and collapsed brushes occurs in a rather gradual manner. The pearl-necklace structure occurring at intermediate grafting densities and rather low temperatures has a pronounced medium-range order along the backbone.
Conformational preferences of side-chain protected amino acid residues and their impact in peptide synthesis
1983
Using the host-guest technique, tentative scales for the helix-inducing power and the β-structure-forming potential of various side-chain protected amino acid residues in trifluoro-ethanol are established mainly by CD measurements. The generally lower tendency for β-structure formation of the host–guest peptides compared to that of the host peptide is discussed. The influence of these conformational features on the solubility of the peptides is also pointed out.
Co-ordination of copper(II) ions by prolyl-α,β-dehydroamino acids: comparative studies and general considerations
1996
Potentiometric and spectroscopic measurements and theoretical calculations have revealed that α,β-dehydroamino acid residues have a considerable effect on the co-ordination ability of an adjacent amide nitrogen towards Cu2+ ions. Also the side chain of such residues affects the stability constants and, in some cases, the binding mode of short peptides containing α,β-dehydroamino acid residues. The theoretical calculations showed that all dehydroamino acids except α,β-dehydroalanine tend to bend a peptide chain towards a turn conformation. This has a very strong impact on the co-ordination ability of a dehydropeptide ligand.
Impact of Molecular Size and Shape on the Supramolecular Co‐Assembly of Chiral Tricarboxamides: A Comparative Study
2020
We report herein a comparative investigation of the chiral amplification features of a series of three families of C 3 -symmetric tricarboxamides: 1,3,5-triphenylbenzenetricarboxamides (TPBAs), benzenetricarboxamides (BTAs) and oligo(phenylene ethynylene) tricarboxamides (OPE-TAs). As previously observed for BTAs and OPE-TAs, a similar dichroic response is obtained for TPBAs decorated with three, two or only one chiral side chain bearing stereogenic centers, thus confirming the efficient transfer of point chirality to the supramolecular helical aggregates. Unlike BTAs and OPE-TAs, the chiral amplification ability of TPBAs in majority rules experiments shows a negligible dependence on the nu…
Decoding the Consequences of Increasing the Size of Self-Assembling Tricarboxamides on Chiral Amplification
2019
A complete series of experimental and theoretical investigations on the supramolecular polymerization of chiral (1 and 2) and achiral (3) oligo(phenylene ethynylene) tricarboxamides (OPE-TAs) is reported. The performance of seargents-and-soldiers (SaS) and majority rules (MR) experiments has allowed deriving a full set of thermodynamic parameters, including the helix reversal penalty (HRP) and the mismatch penalty (MMP). The results described illustrate the influence exerted by the number of stereogenic centers per monomeric unit and the temperature on the chiral amplification phenomenon. While the HRP decreases upon decreasing the number of chiral side chains, the MMP follows an opposite t…
Triarylamines connected via phenylenevinylene segments
2003
Abstract The influences of the conjugation length and of side chains with various electronic character on the electro-optical properties of oligo(phenylenevinylene)s end-capped with diphenylamino groups are investigated. Horner-Olefinations were used for the synthesis of chromophores with 3–7 rings in the conjugated system, additionally, Pd-catalysed amination of bromo-OPVs is a useful route to introduce the end groups. Compared with the “electronically neutral” alkyl side chains, electron donating ethers and, more pronounced, electron withdrawing sulfonyl side chains shift the absorption and emission spectra to longer wavelengths. The elongation of the π-system from 3 to 5 and 7 rings has …
Stilbenoid phosphors with increased electron affinity: sulfones as electron accepting groups
2001
Stilbenoid compounds are one of the preferred classes of luminescent materials for the use in light emitting diodes (LEDs). A problem connected with the use of poly(phenylenevinylene) (PPV) in LEDs is the unbalanced charge carrier transport, electron injection from aluminium and electron transport properties are only poor. The substitution with electron accepting groups like nitriles is a suitable way to lower the LUMO level of the chromophore. The electron withdrawing strength of sulfones is comparable to cyanides and the second binding site is useful to attach solubilising side chains. A two-step synthesis of model compounds and polymers from ethene and sulfonyl dibromobenzene and bromo a…

The thermal degradation mechanisms of amphiphilic acrylic copolymers containing mesogenic pyrimidine side chains and hydrophilic 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) main-chain spacer units were investigated by thermogravimetry (TG) and pyrolysis-field ionization mass spectrometry (Py-FIMS). The degradation behaviour of these polymers depends on the amount of HEA incorporated. Thermogravimetry revealed that the main decomposition occurs in a single step for the pyrimidine homopolymer, whereas with increasing HEA content a two-step process evolves. The major products identified by Py-FIMS are two alcohols and one olefin split from the aromatic side chains. Depolymerization is only a minor degradati…
