Analyzing Illumina Gene Expression Microarray Data from Different Tissues: Methodological Aspects of Data Analysis in the MetaXpress Consortium

Microarray profiling of gene expression is widely applied in molecular biology and functional genomics. Experimental and technical variations make meta-analysis of different studies challenging. In a total of 3358 samples, all from German population-based cohorts, we investigated the effect of data preprocessing and the variability due to sample processing in whole blood cell and blood monocyte gene expression data, measured on the Illumina HumanHT-12 v3 BeadChip array. Gene expression signal intensities were similar after applying the log(2) or the variance-stabilizing transformation. Using Matlab's wavelet toolbox to compare electric signals outputted by microbial fuel cells

Motivation: microbial fuel cells (MFC) represents a wastewater treatment technology with the potential for a relevant electric energy generation. The monitoring of the electric current outputted generates time series of data. It was generated two time series using an experimental setup with a low-cost dual chamber microbial fuel cell treating cassava wastewater and, also, it was used the electric current data from a previously described experiment with this same setup treating cheese whey. Sensor-Oriented Passive RFID

This chapter addresses the design of new UHF tag antennas for sensing applications able to host detectors and additional electronics but also to act as passive sensor itself for some modification of the target. Starting from the consideration that the tag is both a digital and an analog device, sensing data may be achieved without using microcontrollers by a simple signal processing of the tag response and of the turn-on power. The chapter is particularly focused on the monitoring of human body features even if the proposed ideas and devices, here demonstrated by simulations and experimentation, may also be applied in a variety of scenarios.

Performance of Thin-Film Lithium Energy Cells under Uniaxial Pressure

The objective of this study was two-fold. The first objective was to determine if the all-solid-state thin-film lithium energy cells could withstand the minimal 550 kPa uniaxial pressure required for composite manufacturing, which both specimens successfully did. The second objective was to determine the upper boundary uniaxial pressure limit of operation for the all-solid-state thin-film lithium energy cells. The two all-solid- state thin-film lithium energy cells tested in the present study under uniaxial pressure performed well even when subjected to uniaxial pressures up to about 2.0 MPa. Muscular MEMS—the engineering of liquid crystal elastomer actuators

A new class of soft-matter actuator, the liquid crystal elastomer (LCE), shows promise for application in a wide variety of mechanical microsystems. Frequently referred to as an 'artificial muscle', this family of materials exhibits large actuation stroke and generates considerable force, in a compact form which may easily be combined with the structures and devices commonly used in microsystems and MEMS. Shaded-mask filtering: novel strategy for improvement of resolution in radial-polarization scanning microscopy

Radially polarized illumination produces, in combination with annular pupil filtering, the sharpest focal spot. However, the enhanced sidelobes produce an effective deterioration of spatial resolution. This study shows that if one substitutes the annular filter by one, adequately designed, shaded-mask filter, the sidelobes' strength is strongly reduced, and an important, effective improvement of resolution is achieved.

Scanning microscopy with spatial sampling of the detector plane

We present the implementation of a confocal scanning microscope in which the signal detection is performed through a matrix sensor, specifically, a CCD camera. This kind of detection has several advantages over the conventional detection in confocal microscopes. One of those advantages is the possibility to recover information of the sample that vanishes when the confocal image is directly acquired by the integration of light into a signal. We demonstrate the applicability of the system which allows implementing super-resolution techniques in a very easy manner.

Microscope system with on axis programmable Fourier transform filtering

Abstract We propose an on-axis microscope optical system to implement programmable optical Fourier transform image processing operations, taking advantage of phase and polarization modulation of a liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) display. We use a Hamamatsu spatial light modulator (SLM), free of flickering, which therefore can be tuned to fully eliminate the zero order component of the encoded diffractive filter.
