Baby MIND: a magnetized segmented neutrino detector for the WAGASCI experiment
2017
T2K (Tokai-to-Kamioka) is a long-baseline neutrino experiment in Japan designed to study various parameters of neutrino oscillations. A near detector complex (ND280) is located 280~m downstream of the production target and measures neutrino beam parameters before any oscillations occur. ND280's measurements are used to predict the number and spectra of neutrinos in the Super-Kamiokande detector at the distance of 295~km. The difference in the target material between the far (water) and near (scintillator, hydrocarbon) detectors leads to the main non-cancelling systematic uncertainty for the oscillation analysis. In order to reduce this uncertainty a new WAter-Grid-And-SCintillator detector …
Prototype tests for a highly granular scintillator-based hadronic calorimeter
2017
Within the CALICE collaboration, several concepts for the hadronic calorimeter of a future lepton collider detector are studied. After having demonstrated the capabilities of the measurement methods in "physics prototypes", the focus now lies on improving their implementation in "technological prototypes", that are scalable to the full linear collider detector. The Analogue Hadronic Calorimeter (AHCAL) concept is a sampling calorimeter of tungsten or steel absorber plates and plastic scintillator tiles read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) as active components. The front-end electronics is fully integrated into the active layers of the calorimeter and is designed for minimal power co…
Alpha spectrometric characterization of thin $^{233}$U sources for $^{229\text{(m)}}$Th production
2020
Four different techniques were applied for the production of $^{233}$U alpha recoil ion sources, providing $^{229}$Th ions. They were compared with respect to a minimum energy spread of the $^{229}$Th recoil ions, using the emitted alpha particles as an indicator. The techniques of Molecular Plating, Drop-on-Demand inkjet printing, chelation from dilute nitric acid solution on chemically functionalized silicon surfaces, and self-adsorption on passivated titanium surfaces were used. All fabricated sources were characterized by using alpha spectrometry, radiographic imaging, and scanning electron microscopy. A direct validation for the estimated recoil ion rate was obtained by collecting $^{2…

Transport properties of silicon doped n-indium selenide
1992
Hall effect and resistivity measurements in silicon doped indium selenide (InSe), from 7K to 500K, are reported. Results are interpreted through a model, previously proposed for tin doped InSe, that takes into account the contribution of both three- and two-dimensional electrons to charge transport along the layers in InSe.
α -decay spectroscopy of the N=130 isotones Ra218 and Th220 : Mitigation of α -particle energy summing with implanted nuclei
2019
© 2019 American Physical Society. An analysis technique has been developed in order to mitigate energy summing due to sequential short-lived α decays from nuclei implanted into a silicon detector. Using this technique, α-decay spectroscopy of the N=130 isotones Ra218 (Z=88) and Th220 (Z=90) has been performed. The energies of the α particles emitted in the Ra218→Rn214 and Th220→Ra216 ground-state-to-ground-state decays have been measured to be 8381(4) keV and 8818(13) keV, respectively. The half-lives of the ground states of Ra218 and Th220 have been measured to be 25.99(10) μs and 10.4(4) μs, respectively. The half-lives of the ground states of the α-decay daughters, Rn214 and Ra216, have …
Electron channeling experiments with bent silicon single crystals—a reanalysis based on a modified Fokker-Planck equation
2020
A surprising small dechanneling length was observed at (111) channeling of ultrarelativistic electrons in a 60 $\mu$m thick silicon single crystal with a bending radius of 0.15 m. The experiments were conducted at beam energies between 3.35 and 14 GeV at the Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests (FACET at SLAC, USA). It is shown in this paper that the small dechanneling lengths can well be reproduced with a modified Fokker-Planck equation for plane crystals in which a crystal bending has been heuristically introduced. Encouraged by this result experiments have been reconsidered which were performed at the Mainz Microtron MAMI with (110) silicon undulator crystals. The results…
The DEPFET based Focal Plane Detectors for MIXS on BepiColombo
2010
X-ray detectors based on arrays of DEPFET macropixels, which consist of a silicon drift detector combined with a detector/amplifier structure DEPFET as readout node, provide a convenient and flexible way to adapt the pixel size of a focal plane detector to the resolving power of any given X-ray optical system. Macropixels combine the traditional benefits of an SDD, like scalability, arbitrary geometry and excellent QE even in the low energy range, with the advantages of DEPFET structures: Charge storage capability, near Fano-limited energy resolution, low power consumption and high speed readout. Being part of the scientific payload of ESA's BepiColombo mission, the MIXS instrument will be …
Near-unity third-harmonic circular dichroism driven by a quasibound state in the continuum in asymmetric silicon metasurfaces
2021
We use numerical simulations to demonstrate third-harmonic generation with near-unity nonlinear circular dichroism (CD) and high conversion efficiency $({10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{\text{W}}^{\ensuremath{-}2})$ in asymmetric Si-on-$\mathrm{Si}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ metasurfaces. The working principle relies on the spin-selective excitation of a quasibound state in the continuum, characterized by a very high $(g{10}^{5})$ quality factor. By tuning multimode interference with the variation of the metasurface geometrical parameters, we show the possibility to control both linear CD and nonlinear CD. Our results pave the way for the development of all-dielectric metasurfaces for …
Orbital origin and matrix element effects in the Ag/Si(111)-()R30° Fermi surface
2007
The Fermi surface (FS) of the Ag/Si(1 1 1)-3×3 reconstruction with an excess of Ag has been mapped by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy with polarized light in a wide region of the reciprocal space and with different detection geometries. In contrast to previous results, a strong polarization dependence is observed. Applying the dipole selection rules, it is found that the surface state at the Fermi level, S1 state, has odd symmetry with respect to the mirror plane of the honeycomb-chained triangle structure, indicating that it is mainly derived from Ag 5px and 5py orbitals. This conclusion is revised in the new frame of a inequivalent-triangle structure for the Ag/Si(1 1 1)-3×3 at …
