[Diagnosis in pediatric "allergic" patients].
1998
Background. A clinician who deals with allergic patients needs the help of in vivo and in vitro allergometric tests in order to decide difficult therapeutic choices. Methods. In the section of Clinical Immunology of the Institute of Paediatrics (Palermo University) two allergologic tests, prick and MAST-CIA, have been studied retrospectively, they were performed on patients observed for allergic disorders over 5 years. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic capacity of these tests "on the field". The study population is made of 459 patients (age range from 6 months to 16 years) affected with asthma, rhinitis, presumably allergic dermatitis, association of asthma and dermatitis…
Hauttestungen mit Nahrungsmittelallergenen
2008
Near-fatal asthma phenotype in the ENFUMOSA Cohort.
2007
Summary Background Near-fatal asthma (NFA) is characterized by severe asthma attacks usually requiring intensive care unit admission. This phenotype of asthma has been studied mainly in acute conditions. Methods The aim of our study was to compare the clinical, functional and inflammatory characteristics of NFA patients with mild to severe asthmatics in stable conditions. We recruited 155 asthmatic patients from five centres of the European Network for Understanding Mechanisms of Severe Asthma: 67 patients with mild-to-moderate asthma controlled by low/medium doses of inhaled corticosteroids; 64 with severe asthma that, despite treatment with high doses of inhaled corticosteroids, long-acti…
Asthma attributable to atopy: does it depend on the allergen supply?
2007
The use of the population attributable fraction (PAF) of asthma owing to atopy has not been widely used in epidemiological studies on childhood asthma, especially to compare regions of the same country. The present study includes 1039 children from Cartagena, Spain (Mediterranean coast) and 663 from Madrid (centre of Spanish plateau) using the ISAAC phase II methodology (questionnaire and prick test to the most common allergens). While there were no differences in asthma symptoms between school children (aged 10–11 yr) from Madrid and Cartagena, atopy to any allergen was significantly higher in those from Madrid (40.9% vs. 29.3%, respectively, p < 0.0001). However, children from Madrid were…
A different pattern of risk factors for atopic and non-atopic wheezing in 9-12-year-old children
2005
Few epidemiological studies have compared the risk factors of asthma or wheezing between atopic and non-atopic children. The objective of this study was to determine if there are specific risk factors for current wheezing related to atopic status in schoolchildren. Schoolchildren 9-12 yr of age from three Spanish cities (n = 2720) were subject to a cross-sectional study of asthma risk factors (by questionnaire) and atopy (by skin prick test) according to the ISAAC phase-II protocol. Risk factors for current wheezing (in the last 12 months) as reported by parents were investigated among the atopic (positive prick test to at least one allergen) and the non-atopic (negative prick test) childre…
Comparison of ammoniated and nonammoniated extracts in children with latex allergy
2003
Background: The use of ammoniated or nonammoniated latex extracts for the diagnosis of latex allergy is still a matter of debate. The aim of our study was to compare the characteristics of the two types of extracts by immunoblotting and RAST techniques in children with ascertained latex allergy. Methods: Ammoniated (AL) and nonammoniated latex (NAL) extracts were prepared and blotted on SDS-PAGE to resolve their components. Also a solid phase for RAST assays was prepared with the two extracts. The sera from 18 children (mean age 11.4 years, range 6–15 years), with ascertained latex allergy (clinical history, skin test, CAP-RAST and provocation) were used for the experiments. Results: The…
Measurement of inflammatory mediators of mast cells and eosinophils in native nasal lavage fluid in nasal polyposis.
2001
Background: Nasal polyposis (NP) often coexists with asthma, rhinitis and sinusitis. Polyp histology typically shows chronic, eosinophilic inflammation. The inflammatory cell infiltrate generally includes eosinophils, lymphocytes, plasma cells and mast cells. Objective: To gain insight into the natural history of NP, we analysed mediator levels and leukocyte values in nasal fluids and eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), total IgE levels and eosinophils in the blood in several groups of both allergic and non-allergic patients with nasal polyps and in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR). Methods: Thirty-two patients with nasal polyps en…
Treatment of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis with adenylate deaminase from Penicillium lanoso-viride.
2000
The effect of intramuscularly administered immunomodulator, adenylate deaminase (E.C. 3.5.4.6), from Penicillium lanoso-viride on the clinical score of acute experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a T cell-mediated autoimmune disease, was examined by inoculation of guinea pigs with rabbit brain and spinal cord homogenate (encephalitogen) and complete Freund's adjuvant. Adenylate deaminase (ADA) was effective in delaying the onset of clinical disease. ADA inhibited the severity of EAE. There was a significant decrease in clinical signs. A decrease in the number of morbid and dead animals was observed. Of ADA treated animals, 50-80% developed no clinical manifestations of EAE. The o…
Sensitization to dust mite defines different phenotypes of asthma: A multicenter study
2017
Background Indoor allergens are risk factors for asthma: Thus, the characterization of indoor air quality is important for studying environment–health relationships in children. In particular, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus is the dominant allergen for asthma. We cross-sectionally investigated the relationships among respiratory symptoms and function, airway inflammation, allergen sensitization, and indoor allergen concentration. Methods One hundred and thirty-two children aging 10-14 years and living in a Southern Mediterranean area were evaluated by parental questionnaires. Spirometry, exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), skin prick tests, total, and specific serum IgE analyses were performed alo…
Children monosensitized to pine nuts have similar patterns of sensitization
2012
Background Several cases of pine nut allergies and anaphylaxis have been reported in the literature, but only few pine nut allergens have been characterized. The aim of this research is to identify through immunoelectrophoretic techniques the major pine nut allergens in a group of children monosensitized to pine nuts. Methods We studied five children with pine nut allergies and no other sensitization to food except to pine nuts, confirmed by in vivo (prick test, prick-to-prick) and in vitro tests (specific IgE determinations [CAP-FEIA]). The protein profile of pine nuts was analyzed by Sodium Dodecyl sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Immunoblotting was performed after i…
