This study proposes an integrated approach, framed in the emerging fields of network physiology and information dynamics, for the quantitative analysis of brain-heart interaction networks during sleep. With this approach, the time series of cardiac vagal autonomic activity and brain wave activities measured respectively as the normalized high frequency component of heart rate variability and the EEG power in the δ, θ, Ï, and β bands, are considered as realizations of the stochastic processes describing the dynamics of the heart system and of different brain sub-systems. This article deals with the application of methods from the theory of nonlinear dynamical systems to EEG signals. Theoretical background, mathematical concepts and algorithms for the calculation of "non-linear parameters" are reviewed and influences of the structure of reconstructed data sets on the calculations are pointed out. We present results for the estimation of the correlation dimension D2 and the principal Lyapunov-exponent lambda 1 for sleep EEG data respectively from 10 and 15 healthy subjects corresponding to different sleep stages. Abstract Objective To evaluate sleep in children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) by means of sleep questionnaires and polysomnography; moreover, to analyze their cyclic alternating pattern (CAP). Objective To assess sleep characteristics and the occurrence of abnormal muscle activity during sleep, such as REM sleep without atonia (RSWA), REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), and periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS), in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Methods A total of 41 patients with ALS and 26 healthy subjects were submitted to clinical interview and overnight video-polysomnography. Cardiac adverse events in patients treated with atypical antipsychotics have gained increasing interest in recent years. In the present study, heart rate variability (HRV), which is a sensitive parameter reflecting central autonomic cardiac control, was investigated during treatment with olanzapine. Ten physically healthy male patients with schizophrenia, who displayed predominantly negative symptoms, were studied in the sleep laboratory under drug-free baseline conditions and after 4 weeks of olanzapine medication.
