The Apnea-Hypopnea Index Underestimates Systemic Inflammation in Women with Sleep-Disordered Breathing.

2018

Evidence suggests that sleep-related respiratory and related metabolic compromise may vary between females and males with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). Our purpose was to elucidate possible gender differences in sleep-associated respiratory and inflammatory parameters in patients with SDB.A consecutive number of SDB patients (46 females and 167 males) who underwent polysomnography were retrospectively reviewed. Fibrinogen and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration, apnea index (ApnI), hypopnea index (HypI), apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), average and minimal SpOApnI and AHI were significantly higher in males. Correlation analysis revealed striking gender differences: only in females, CRP co…

Association between +1059G/C CRP polymorphism and acute myocardial infarction in a cohort of patients from Sicily: a pilot study.

2006

Inflammation plays a role in all the phases of atherosclerosis, and increased production of the acute-phase reactant, C-reactive protein (CRP), predicts future cardiovascular events. Furthermore, CRP has been claimed to play a role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis; therefore, CRP polymorphisms might be associated with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We have analyzed male patients affected by AMI and healthy age-related male controls from Sicily for +1059G/C CRP single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). There was a significantly higher frequency of +1059C SNP (P = 0.0008; OR 3.86) in patients compared to controls. CRP serum levels were significantly higher in C+ healthy subjects rather …

Persistence on Anti-Tumour Necrosis Factor Therapy in Older Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease Compared with Younger Patients: Data from the Si…

2020

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Older people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) appear to have a lower response to anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF) therapy, with more frequent complications than younger patients. The objective of this study was to assess persistence on therapy and the safety of anti-TNF therapy in older patients (aged ≥ 60 years). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the database of the Sicilian Network for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (SN-IBD), extracting data regarding IBD patients aged ≥ 60 years and controls < 60 years of age at their first course of anti-TNF treatment. Data concerning persistence on therapy over the first year of treatment (primary objective) together …

The Advantages of Type III Scaphoid Nonunion Advanced Collapse (SNAC) Treatment With Partial Carpal Arthrodesis in the Dominant Hand: Results of 5-ye…

2018

Introduction The SNAC wrist (Scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse) is one of the complications following scaphoid fractures treated conservatively and one of the causes of wrist arthritis that the hand surgeon has to face most frequently. In these cases surgical management is usually warranted. Materials and methods In the set time frame of 6 years we treated 15 SNAC wrist cases. On average patients underwent surgery five years after the trauma. All patients were treated via dorsal incision with partial carpal arthrodesis and total scaphoidectomy, associated with denervation of the posterior interosseous nerves. A plaster cast was applied to all patients for 3 weeks postoperatively. In the p…

Lifetime, 5-year and past-year prevalence of homelessness in Europe: a cross-national survey in eight European nations

2019

ObjectivesTo examine the lifetime, 5-year and past-year prevalence of homelessness among European citizens in eight European nations.DesignA nationally representative telephone survey using trained bilingual interviewers and computer-assisted telephone interview software.SettingThe study was conducted in France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.ParticipantsEuropean adult citizens, selected from opt-in panels from March to December 2017. Total desired sample size was 5600, with 700 per country. Expected response rates of approximately 30% led to initial sample sizes of 2500 per country.Main outcome measuresHistory of homelessness was assessed for lifetime, …

Neural correlates of disturbed perception of verticality.

2012

Objective: Perception of verticality can be perturbed after cortical stroke. However, a relationship between lesion location and pathologic perception of verticality is still a matter of debate since previous studies revealed contradictory results. Thus, the aim of the current study was to test whether specific cortical lesions were associated with tilts of subjective visual vertical (SVV) and to determine the critical brain areas that cause such tilts in the case of a lesion. Methods: SVV was systematically studied in 54 patients (22 patients with left-sided and 32 patients with right-sided lesions) with acute unilateral strokes, analyzed by modern voxel-wise lesion-behavior mapping techni…

Oculovestibular interactions under microgravity.

1993

On a space mission in March 1992 a set of experiments were performed aimed at clarifying the interaction between visual, proprioceptive and vestibular inputs to the equilibrium system. Using the VESTA goggle facility from the European Space Agency we investigated the effect of pure neck receptor stimulation on eye position as measured by the flash afterimage method and on perception of a head-fixed luminous line in space. Space vestibular adaptation processes were measured by rotating pattern perception during prescribed head movements. It was found that static ocular counterrotation does not occur under micro gravity conditions. This result suggests that the neck receptors apparently do no…

Phase II study of continuous-infusion high-dose ifosfamide in advanced and/or metastatic pretreated soft tissue sarcomas.

1998

Summary Background Ifosfamide has important activity in pretreated soft tissue sarcomas (STS), and recent data support a clinically significant dose-response relationship for this agent. Administration by continuous infusion and hematopoietic support have rendered dose intensification regimens possible by reducing both hematologic and non-hematologic toxicities. The optimal dose and schedule of ifosfamide when given at high doses remain to be defined. In a previous phase I study, we demonstrated the feasibility of a continuous infusion (c.i.) high-dose ifosfamide (HDI) regimen in the ambulatory setting for patients with advanced solid tumors. The objective of the present phase II study was …

Degree of Postictal Suppression Depends on Seizure Induction Time in Magnetic Seizure Therapy and Electroconvulsive Therapy.

2017

OBJECTIVES Anesthesia is required for both magnetic seizure therapy (MST) and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), although it has anticonvulsant properties. In this case, bispectral index (BIS) monitoring, a specific electroencephalogram-derived monitoring, can be used to find the optimal seizure induction time during anesthesia to elicit adequate seizures. A measurement of seizure adequacy in electroencephalogram is the postictal suppression. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of seizure induction time on the degree of postictal suppression by comparing BIS versus no-BIS monitoring in MST and ECT. METHODS Twenty patients with treatment-resistant depression were randoml…

Patient education in physiotherapy in total hip arthroplasty (THA) - The perspective of physiotherapists

2018

Background and Purpose There is limited knowledge about patients’ and physiotherapists’ perceptions of patient education in physiotherapy in hip arthroplasty. The aim of this study was to describe physiotherapists’ conceptions of the patient education in physiotherapy needed by patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. Methods The data for this qualitative study were collected using group and individual semi-structured interviews. Seven physiotherapists were interviewed. The research data were analyzed using a phenomenographic method. Results Three categories of patient education in physiotherapy in hip arthroplasty were produced and the categories formed a hierarchy. The narrowest descri…
