The poor man’s goldmine? : Career paths in Swedish and Finnish merchant shipping, c. 1840–1950

2017

This article analyses the career paths of Swedish and Finnish sailors from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. The article shows that, for the most of the men, the seaman’s occupation was just a passing phase before taking up a job on shore, but many of them also created a longlasting and advancing career by going to sea. There was not necessarily, however, a clear distinction between job opportunities at sea and those on shore in those days: men worked both at sea and on shore. We therefore argue that an individual’s advancement in a maritime career was a context-specific socio-economic phenomenon. In Scandinavia, work on board ships was dependent on features that characterized the divis…

Der Aufbau des Sozialismus

2020

2020

We study here the presence of the numerous Genoese silk dealers in Valencia at the end of the XVth century: merchants, artisans, workers. This settlement signified a crucial economic change in the Valencian traditional silk industry with its Moorish background, and this, in consequence, facilitated reconversion of the textile industry and an increase in its trade. Moreover, international migration and the role of the Genoese silk industry facilitated social mobility during the low Middle Ages and contributed to the origin of the modern European system of relationships in the Mediterranean. On étudie ici la présence de nombreux soyeux génois à Valence a la fin du XVe siècle: marchands, art…

Los dominios valencianos de la casa de Medinaceli entre los siglos XVI y XVII. El Ducado de Segorbe

2019

In the Valencian Seigniories of the House of Medinaceli, the expulsion of the Moorish had its negative effects, but not catastrophic. The repopulation impelled the concentration process of the property of the land and supposed a reorganization of the lordly regime that permitted be adapted better to the inflationary movements. The emphiteutic establishments of the properties that belongs to the Moorish originated rural communities quite homogeneous, thought gradually their internal differentiation was increased. Until the middle of XVIIIth century they were constituting typical examples of agrarian societies with a scarce degree of social mobility.

Autonomy Freedom and Preferences for Redistribution

2007

In this paper we study the determinants of people's attitudes toward income inequality and their consequences for redistributive policies. In the light of a recent literature in social choice theory, we argue that an individual's attitudes toward inequality depend upon the extent of autonomy freedom he/she enjoys. We use individual level data to validate our theory and show that the higher the extent of an individual's autonomy freedom, the greater the probability that he/she supports larger income differences as incentives for individual effort. Conversely, the lower the extent of autonomy freedom, the more likely he/she supports the view that incomes should be made more equal. These findi…

Multidimensional social capital in new ventures

2013

This paper analyzes and provides empirical evidence on how three different dimensions of social capital (structural, relational, and resources) have a direct causal relation on the performance of financial service start-ups. To this end, a structural equation model is estimated and validated from a database, including information from 142 Argentinean entrepreneurs who answered a questionnaire specifically designed for this research. The main finding of the paper is that the main source of value of social capital for an entrepreneur is the existence of high-quality links. Moreover, the quality of the entrepreneur's links is even more important than their quantity. This conclusion has relevan…

Socio-economic inequalities and organized crime: An empirical analysis

2020

In this chapter we contribute to the recent literature (e.g., Istat, 2010, Acciari et al., 2016, Guell et al., 2017) that provides evidence that inequality is high and social mobility is low in the Italian regions and prov-inces where organized crime is widespread such as those of Southern Italy. We complement this line of work in two respects. First, using a novel pan-el dataset at the regional level for the period 1985-2014 we investigate the relationship between inequality and organized crime at the regional level, exploiting both time and cross-sectional variation. Second, we assess the role of social mobility in organized crime. Our main finding is that higher inequality leads to highe…

Vocational bachelor graduates in France: labour market integration and social mobility

2014

Purpose – In France, the vocationalization of higher education has resulted in an increase in the number of graduates and created new opportunities. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – To provide insights into these issues, the employment situation of bachelor graduates during the first years of active working life will be compared with other tertiary graduates entering the labour market in the same years, using econometric models that estimate the effects of vocational courses “all other t…

The role of categorization bias in situations of sports and non-sport interaction among Cameroonian footballers migrating to Europe and the Maghreb

2019

The objective of this doctoral work was to consider the difficulties of integration of Cameroonian footballers migrating in Europe and the Maghreb. Starting from the mobilization of a theoretical framework centered on intergroup relations, we questioned the role ofcategorical and identity processes in situations of sporting and non-sporting interactions and their effects on players' behavior. The first exploratory and qualitative study was conducted among Cameroonian footballers who had lived an experience in European or Maghreb clubs. It highlighted the relationship difficulties and forms of discrimination sports and non-sporting which they face, in relation to their ethnic origin. The seco…
