On the positive aspects of customers: Customer-initiated support and affective crossover in employee-customer dyads

2011

This study examines psychological resources for service employees and their customers, which enhance the service experiences of both parties during service conversations. We investigate whether customer behaviour (customer-initiated support) positively impacts on employees' affect. We also examine the crossover of employees' affect on customers' affect. State positive affect (PA) was assessed in 82 employees of car dealerships and 421 customers on 2 occasions (before and after the conversation). Multi-level analyses showed the hypothesized positive impact of customer behaviour on employees' PA and in turn of employees' PA on customers' PA. Results are integrated in an overall process model …

Perceptual Social Dimensions of Human - Humanoid Robot Interaction

2013

The present paper aims at a descriptive analysis of the main perceptual and social features of natural conditions of agent interaction, which can be specified by agent in human-humanoid robot interaction. A principled approach to human-robot interaction may be assumed to comply with the natural conditions of agents overt perceptual and social behaviour. To validate our research we used the minimalistic humanoid robot Telenoid. We have conducted human-robot interactions test with people with no prior interaction experience with robot. By administrating our questionnaire to subject after well defined experimental conditions, an analysis of significant variance correlation among dimensions in …

Platforms for Human-Human Interaction in Large Social Events

2012

In this paper we present the evolution of QRouteMe, an information system built to provide people with rich user experiences when attending museums or exhibits. QRouteMe is a platform for indirect, mediated, and facilitated interactions among humans during large social events, by means of a wide variety of concurrent technologies and devices. The system evolution is analyzed according to the new human-to-human interaction (HHI) research domain. In particular, we show how QRouteMe has been adapted for the different events in which it has been used. We analyze and describe social interaction aspects during the events and we discuss some data and results. Finally we outline some possible futur…

A New Humanoid Architecture for Social Interaction between Human and a Robot Expressing Human-Like Emotions Using an Android Mobile Device as Interfa…

2013

In this paper we illustrate a humanoid robot able to interact socially and naturally with a human by expressing human-like body emotions. The emotional architecture of this robot is based on an emotional conceptual space generated using the paradigm of Latent Semantic Analysis. The robot generates its overall affective behavior (Latent Semantic Behavior) taking into account the visual and phrasal stimuli of human user, the environment and its personality, all encoded in his emotional conceptual space. The robot determines its emotion according by all these parameters that influence and orient the generation of his behavior not predictable from the user. The goal of this approach is to obtai…

Environmental Stimulus Perception as an Incidence Factor in Social Interaction and Personality Development

2019

This paper seeks to analyze the impact of perceptual process, as a way of perceiving ourselves and others, as well as personality development and social attitudes which emerge from early interactions in the primary environment. Although many studies have highlighted the importance of early social interactions for both the genetic and psychobiological components of personality development, there is actually little data that examines the influence of these genetic factors on this process. This study focuses on the genetic bases of the perception process and its role in how we experience emotions and how we perceive the surrounding environment, starting with early interactions with caregivers.…

Identità e relazioni sociali. Dai popoli migranti alla cultura del Web 2.0

2014

The essay is a reflection about identity and role of communication on creating, mantaining and destroying social relations.

Dialogue Involvement as a Social Influence Technique

2001

When a request is preceded by a casual dialogue, the approached person is more likely to comply than when the same request follows a monologue. This effect appeared to be strong and replicable in a series of field studies. Across experiments, the issues discussed in conversations between the confederates and the participants and the nature of the critical request varied, suggesting that the effect is generalized. In social situations, the two basic modes of communication (dialogue and monologue) are characteristic of different types of interactions. Dialogue is characteristic of encounters with one’s friends and acquaintances, whereas monologue is more prevalent in contacts with strangers.…

A study of minorities as victims

2006

This article presents the idea that during the 1990s an important change took place in relation between minorities and majorities: the emergence of minorities as victims alongside the formerly predominant active, militant minorities. A hypothesis is raised that these two types of minorities differ in their agenda as well as in the nature of the influence they exert. Active minorities trigger an external conflict with majority and induce conversion (latent rather than overt influence); minorities as victims create an internal conflict, a sense of guilt, within the majority, while they exert an exclusively overt influence. We report two experiments confirming our hypothesis. We discuss the no…

The Social Relations Model: How to Understand Dyadic Processes

2010

The social relations model (SRM) is an intriguing tool both to conceptualize and to analyze dyadic processes. We begin with explaining why interpersonal phenomena in everyday life are more complex than often considered. We then show how the SRM accounts for these complexities by decomposing interpersonal perceptions and behaviors into three independent components and describe the designs required to investigate these components. We then provide a step-by-step

Predicting social integration in the community among college students

2004

This article aims to examine determinants of social integration in the community among college students. Two-wave panel data from an undergraduate student sample (N 310) was used to explore the effects of multiple sets of variables (personal, interpersonal, and situational) on social integration in the community. Structural equation analysis showed that personal (self-esteem and perceived stress) and situational (undesirable life events) variables made significant contributions to changes to social integration in the community. Implications of these and other findings are discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The expansion of social networks beyond relationships with family and peers is…
