Cooperatives and Social Capital : A Theoretically-Grounded Approach
2019
Social capital is widely regarded as a collective resource with positive effects on the economic performance of cooperatives. This conclusion is based on the implicit assumption that social interactions between cooperative members would inexorably lead to the development of networks, norms and trust. This paper challenges the validity of this assumption. Conceptualizing social capital as a resource of the individual, it is argued that the interactions between cooperative members may lead to the establishment of a variety of complex social ties, some of which can negatively affect the economic performance of the organization. To illustrate this argument, the paper presents an exploratory cas…
Is traditional teaching really all that bad? A within-student between-subject approach
2011
Abstract Recent studies conclude that teachers are important for student learning but it remains uncertain what actually determines effective teaching. This study directly peers into the black box of educational production by investigating the relationship between lecture style teaching and student achievement. Based on matched student–teacher data for the US, the estimation strategy exploits between-subject variation to control for unobserved student traits. Results indicate that traditional lecture style teaching is associated with significantly higher student achievement. No support for detrimental effects of lecture style teaching can be found even when evaluating possible selection bia…
Predicting the working alliance over the course of long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy with the Rorschach Ego Impairment Index, self-reported defen…
2021
Better therapeutic alliances are known to predict better treatment outcomes, but little knowledge still exists on the patient characteristics that lead to better alliances. In a sample of 128 outpatients assigned to long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy and suffering from mood and/or anxiety disorder, this study evaluated how the alliance, measured using the Working Alliance Inventory (WAI), is predicted by three different measures for assessing psychological resources and vulnerabilities: the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale—Revised (WAIS–R), the Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ), and the Rorschach-based Ego Impairment Index (EII-2). All the three measures showed some ability to predict t…
Unfolding Cyberspace: Cyberplaces of the Contrade and the Style of Representation in the Global Arena
2017
This chapter shows that, in the online representation of the contrade of Siena, the global level is not opposed to the local but is, instead, a particular way in which the local is represented. The method of placing their community on the global stage is that of an idealised inhabitation, one which also allows them to keep control over the formation of their collective identities. Furthermore, it shows that in the globalised world, the neighbourhoods of Siena encounter a global interest in their way of life which has made them alter their modes of self-representation . In order to position themselves in both local and global contexts, they have chosen to use the World Wide Web to present th…
"Hei mitä tää ny tarkottaa?" : experiences of intercultural communication and linguistic shock while using English abroad
2016
Superdiversity perspective and the sociolinguistics of social media
2018
This chapter shows how the superdiversity perspective suggested in recent critical sociolinguistics provides the study of social media discourse and communication with a useful approach to conceptualizing and empirically investigating complex and multiple axes of diversity and difference in social media practices. It discusses recent work in sociolinguistics of social media, highlighting how social media practices illustrate many of the aspects of contemporary social life and communication that are considered symptomatic of superdiversity. It shows how research in this field has moved from viewing superdiversity as a quality or quantity characterizing specific places, spaces, groups and net…

Parenting style and peer attachment as predictors of emotional instability in children
2017
We analyzed the roles of parenting style and peer attachment in predicting emotional instability in late childhood and early adolescence. Effects were analyzed separately by gender. Children's personal variables analyzed were empathy, anger, and the mechanisms used to cope with anger (externalization and self-control). Participants were 316 girls and 294 boys (N = 610) aged from 9 to 12 years who were students at schools in Valencia, Spain. Main gender differences for each variable were examined using one-way ANOVAs. Results of 2 multiple linear regression analyses (1 for boys and 1 for girls) explained 50.9% and 35.5%, respectively, of variance in the students' emotional instability. Consi…
The Decline of the Spanish Fury
2015
Before the Spanish national team won the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament, it had been said that the economic take-off and growing international relevance acquired by Spanish society since the restoration of democracy after the death of General Franco had not been reflected in Spanish football. Its main representative, the Spanish national football team did not manage to obtain significant victories in the most important international championships or develop a playing style that satisfied its followers. This fact strongly contrasted with the protagonist role and huge success achieved by the main Spanish football clubs at the European level. However, the victory of the Spanish national team in Eur…
