Sodium Dodecylsulphate Electrophoresis
1994
Sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) consists of an aliphatic chain of 12 C atoms to which at one end a sulphate residue is bound. It forms complexes with both the polar and non- polar amino acid residues of proteins irrespective of their sizes and shapes, leaving the primary structure uninfluenced. In electrophoresis SDS is used: a) to separate (enzyme) proteins into their monomeric constituents, b) to estimate the molecular mass of unfolded (and reduced) polypeptides, and c) to keep membrane proteins in a solubilized state.
Polymer-induced phase separation in suspensions of bacteria
2010
We study phase separation in suspensions of two unrelated species of rod-like bacteria, Escherichia coli and Sinorhizobium meliloti, induced by the addition of two different anionic polyelectrolytes, sodium polystyrene sulfonate or succinoglycan, the former being synthetic and the latter of natural origin. Comparison with the known behaviour of synthetic colloid-polymer mixtures and with simulations show that "depletion" (or, equivalently, "macromolecular crowding") is the dominant mechanism: exclusion of the non-adsorbing polymer from the region between two neighbouring bacteria creates an unbalanced osmotic force pushing them together. The implications of our results for understanding phe…
Some observations on the determination of sulfite by reduction to sulfide with sodium borohydride
1987
Abstract Sodium borohydride is studied as an agent for reducing sulfite to sulfide. Rapid reductions are attained with greater than 97% recovery in the range 700–1200 μg of S/50 ml. Sulfate is not reduced.
FT-IR and dielectric study of water/AOT liquid crystals
2000
Abstract In order to explore the influence of microwave radiation on highly viscous microheterogeneous systems, the evolution of structural and dynamical properties of the water/sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT) liquid crystals as a function of the molar ratio R (R=[water]/[AOT]) has been investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy and time domain reflectometry. The study emphasises how the progressive hydration of the surfactant head groups is mainly responsible for the structural and dynamical evolution of water/AOT liquid crystals. In particular, it has been found that the state of water at lower R values is strongly perturbed, bulk-like water appears only at R>23 and the water/AOT in…
Coordination behavior of cinoxacine: Synthesis and crystal structure of tris (cinoxacinate) cobaltate(II) of sodium hexahydrate (HCx = 1-ethyl-4(1H) …
1991
The synthesis, crystal, and molecular structure of Co(Cx)3Na6H2O are reported. The Cobalt(II) compound crystallizes in the trigonal system, space group R 3 with Z = 6, in a cell of dimensions a= 18.688(7) (A), c= 20.142(6) A. Least-squares refinement of 1331 reflections [I≥3σ(I)] gave a final R = 0.088 for all observed reflections. The structure consists of anionic monomeric units of (Co(Cx)3−) and sodium cations. Three Cinoxacinate ions are chelated through Oceto and Ocarbox atoms. The Co(II) ion positioned on the third axis is bonded to six oxygen atoms in a slightly distorted octahedral environment.
NonclassicalPschorr andSandmeyer Reactions in Pyrazole Series
2005
The diazonium salt derived from 4-amino-N,1,3-trimethyl-N-(3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl)-1H-pyrazole-5-carboxamide (14) was reacted with a mixture of CuSO4 and NaCl, with ascorbic acid as an initiator to afford the planar derivative 4,6-dihydro-1,4,6,8-tetramethyl-3-phenyldipyrazolo[3,4-b:4′,3′-d]pyridin-5(3H)-one (16) and its unexpected isomer 4,6-dihydro-3,4,6,8-tetramethyl-1-phenyldipyrazolo[4,3-b:4′,3′-d]pyridin-5(1H)-one (17), as well as the epimers (3S,4S)- (or (3S,4R)-) and (3S,4R)- (or (3S,4S)-) 4-chloro-2,4-dihydro-1′,3′,5,5′-tetramethyl-2-phenylspiro[pyrazole-3,4′(1′H)-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrazol]-6′(5′H)-one (18a and b, respectively). Epimers 18a and b were converted under basic c…
Reactivity of 4,4-Dichloro-1,1-diphenyl-2-azabutadiene Towards Alkoxides and Thiolates: Synthesis of Functionalised π-Conjugated 2-Azabutadienes and …
2006
Treatment of 4,4-dichloro-1,1-diphenyl-2-azabuta-1,3-diene [Cl2C=C(H)-N=CPh2] (1) with excess sodium isopropylthiolate or sodium thiophenolate in DMF yielded the 2-azabutadiene derivatives (RS)2C=C(H)–N=CPh2 (2) (2a R = iPr; 2b R = Ph). Nucleophilic attack of the sodium salt of ethyl thioglycolate on 1 afforded as the sole product the six-membered heterocyclic compound ethyl 2-ethoxycarbonylmethylthio-5,5-diphenyl-5,6-dihydro-4H-1,4-thiazine-6-carboxylate (5). The reaction is initiated by substitution of the two vinyl-bound chloro substituents to give {EtO(O=)CCH2S}2C=C(H)–N=CPh2 (2c) as intermediate. A mechanism that accounts for the subsequent cyclisation reaction is proposed. The 2-azabu…
Molecular modeling studies of interactions between styrene–butadiene latex and sodium polyacrylate polymer surface
2010
Abstract The interaction between two important paper coating ingredients, sodium polyacrylate polymer dispersing agent and styrene–butadiene latex binder, was studied using classical force field and quantum chemical methods. The objective was to understand the adsorption of styrene–butadiene latex on the sodium polyacrylate polymer model surfaces at 300 K using molecular dynamics simulations. A quantum mechanical ab initio Hartree–Fock method was also used to obtain detailed information about the above interactions. In addition, the effect of moisture was investigated. Calculations showed that the conformation and orientation of styrene–butadiene latex, the number of carboxylate groups in t…
The effect of osmo-induced stress on product formation by Zymomonas mobilis on sucrose
2000
The intensification of biosynthesis of fructooligosaccharides in the presence of high salt concentrations was observed during sucrose (10%) fermentation by Zymomonas mobilis 113S. A 0.6 M NaCl concentration led to an increase of oligosaccharide productivity by 3.5-fold. Sorbitol formation was increased in the presence of 0.16 M NaCl and was inhibited at highest salt concentrations. In a medium with high (65%, w/w) sucrose content the salts gave inhibitory effects on fructooligosaccharide production by lyophilised Z. mobilis cells. Influence of salts on gluconic acid and sorbitol formation under these conditions was studied. The ratio of oligosaccharides and gluconic acid productivity (Qolig…
