Thermodynamics of Solubilization of Pentanol in Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate-Dodecyldimethylamine Oxide Mixed Micelles

Abstract Heat capacity and density measurements of pentanol (PeOH)-sodium dodecyl sulfate (NaDS)-dodecyldimethylamine oxide-water mixtures were carried out at 0.03 m PeOH as a function of the total surfactants concentration (mc) at different ratios (XNaDS). From experimental data, the apparent molar volumes (VΦ,R) and heat capacities (CΦ,R) of PeOH in the surfactants mixture solutions were calculated. As a general feature, at a given mixture composition, VΦ,R increases monotonically with mt as observed in pure surfactants. Triple-Quantum Two-Dimensional 27Al Magic Angle Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study of the Aluminum Incorporation in Calcium Silicate Hydrates

Triple-quantum two-dimensional 27Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (27Al 3Q-MAS NMR) was used to characterize the substitution of Si4+ by Al3+ into the Te−Oc−Te structure of calcium silicate hydrates (C−S−H). This substitution was studied with C−S−H having an Oc/Te ratio of 1 and in equilibrium with Al(OH)3 in aqueous suspensions. In the absence of NaOH, no substitution into the C−S−H structure occurred. Addition of NaOH in the preparation increased the concentration of Al(OH)4- and favored substitution. Synthesis of phenol–formaldehyde resole resins in the presence of tetraalkylammonium hydroxides as catalysts

Abstract We synthesised phenol–formaldehyde resole resins in the presence of tetraalkylammonium hydroxides as catalysts. The activity of these catalysts was compared with the activity of sodium hydroxide. Gas chromatography, thin layer chromatography, 13 C NMR spectrometry, potentiometric titration and a few simple physicochemical methods were used to estimate the composition of the obtained resins and their properties. It was concluded from these studies that tetraalkylammonium hydroxides are active catalysts and the resins obtained in their presence show some interesting properties.
Electrostatic contribution to the interaction of α, β poly (N-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide with sodium dodecylsulfate micelles

The enthalpic effect due to the interaction between α, β poly(N-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA) and sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) in aqueous solutions as a function of the surfactant concentration was measured by the calorimetric technique at various NaCl concentrations. A marked influence of the added electrolyte on the PHEA-SDS interaction was observed. An analysis of the experimental enthalpies allows to estimate the electrostatic and the hydrophobic contributions to the enthalpy of interaction between PHEA and SDS micelles. The results were rationalized in terms of effects due to the screening of the charges residing on PHEA and SDS micelles.
Zeta-Potential Study of Calcium Silicate Hydrates Interacting with Alkaline Cations

An investigation into the interaction between alkaline cations and calcium silicate hydrates (CSH) was conducted by electrokinetic measurements, which provided information on the nature of the interface between the solid and its equilibrium solution. Calcium constitutes for the CSH surface a potential-determining cation. A model of the CSH surface could be proposed, accounting for the experimental evolution of the CSH zeta potential. The necessity of studying the zeta-potential evolution of the system as a function of the calcium activity, instead of its concentration, was underlined. Attenuated total reflectance infrared determination of sodium nitrilotriacetate in alkaline liquid detergents

Abstract An attenuated total reflectance infrared (ATR–FTIR) method has been developed for the direct determination of the chelating agent sodium nitrilotriacetate (NTA) in high pH cleaning formulations. Aqueous samples and standards were placed directly on the diamond ATR cell without any pre-treatment and FTIR spectra were recorded between 4000 and 600 cm−1. Measurement conditions were evaluated. Results obtained for five different commercial formulations containing from 6.22 to 9.25% (w/w) of NTA were in good agreement with the manufacturer's declared content (differences between 3.2 and −3.7%). INFγ stimulates arginine transport through system y+L in human monocytes

Freshly isolated human monocytes transport L-arginine mostly through a sodium independent, NEM insensitive pathway inhibited by L-leucine in the presence, but not in the absence of sodium. Interferon-gamma (IFNgamma) stimulates this pathway, identifiable with system y+L, and markedly enhances the expression of SLC7A7, the gene that encodes for system y+L subunit y+LAT1, but not of SLC7A6, that codes for the alternative subunit y+LAT2. System y+ plays a minor role in arginine uptake by monocytes and the expression of system y+-related genes, SLC7A1 and SLC7A2, is not changed by IFNgamma. These results demonstrate that system y+L is sensitive to IFNgamma.
Early induction of genetic instability and apoptosis by arsenic in cultured Chinese hamster cells

In order to assess at what time from the beginning of exposure inorganic arsenic can give rise to genetic instability and trigger apoptosis, V79-C13 Chinese hamster cells were treated with 10 microM sodium arsenite for 24 h. Under these conditions, cell survival was >70% and cells showed neither an increase in chromosome aberration frequency nor a delay in cell cycle progression. Investigations, which were carried out every 6 h during the treatment, revealed an early appearance of genetically unstable cells, namely micronucleated, multinucleated and mononucleated 'giant' cells, as well as apoptotic cells. This article is the second in a pair of articles on the topic of the generation of a two-color artificial star (which we term a "laser photometric ratio star," or LPRS) of de-excitation light from neutral sodium atoms in the mesosphere, for use in precision telescopic measurements in astronomy and atmospheric physics, and more specifically for the calibration of measurements of dark energy using type Ia supernovae. Polarization-driven spin precession of mesospheric sodium atoms

We report experimental results on the first on-sky observation of atomic spin precession of mesospheric sodium driven by polarization modulation of a continuous-wave laser. The magnetic resonance was remotely detected from the ground by observing the enhancement of induced fluorescence when the driving frequency approached the precession frequency of sodium in the mesosphere, between 85 km and 100 km altitude. The experiment was performed at La Palma, and the uncertainty in the measured Larmor frequency ($\approx$260 kHz) corresponded to an error in the geomagnetic field of 0.4 mG.
