Determination of impurity distributions in ingots of solar grade silicon by neutron activation analysis
2017
AbstractIn a series of crystallization experiments, the directional solidification of silicon was investigated as a low cost path for the production of silicon wafers for solar cells. Instrumental neutron activation analysis was employed to measure the influence of different crystallization parameters on the distribution of 3d-metal impurities of the produced ingots. A theoretical model describing the involved diffusion and segregation processes during the solidification and cooling of the ingots could be verified by the experimental results. By successive etching of the samples after the irradiation, it could be shown that a layer of at least 60 μm of the samples has to be removed to get r…
Drivers of shell growth of the bivalve, Callista chione (L. 1758) - Combined it environmental and biological factors
2018
WOS:000426027100014; Seasonal shell growth patterns were analyzed using the stable oxygen and carbon isotope values of live-collected specimens of the bivalve Callista chione from two sites in the Adriatic Sea (Pag and Cetina, Croatia). Micromilling was performed on the shell surface of three shells per site and shell oxygen isotopes of the powder samples were measured. The timing and rate of seasonal shell growth was determined by aligning the delta O-18(shell)-derived temperatures so that the best fit was achieved with the instrumental temperature curve. According to the data, shells grew only at very low rates or not at all during the winter months, i.e., between January and March. Shell…
Influence of the Richardson number on EM force driven flow structures in square-shaped crucible
2014
Abstract This study is devoted to the experimental investigation of the turbulent melt motion in a square crucible where the flow is created by Lorentz forces generated by an external AC magnetic field. As a strong vertical thermal gradient is present in melt during a directional solidification process, a stratification effect takes place and motion in the vertical direction is damped by buoyancy forces. Such a situation arises if density of fluid layers decreases with height. Experimental velocity and temperature measurements are conducted. Transient effects, like collapse of stratification, are observed experimentally. The significance of stratification in the directional solidification m…
Development of a performance threshold approach for identifying the management options for stabilisation/solidification of lead polluted soils
2014
Two soils spiked with lead at different rates were stabilised/solidified using Portland cement and fy ash at different soil:binder ratios, and tested for their setting time, unconfined compressive strength, leachability and durability. A performance threshold approach was used in order to identify optimal management options for the products of the S/S treatment. Results show that soil texture, percentage of binders and lead concentration play an important part in the treatment, significantly influencing the performance of the resulting products in terms of curing, compressive strength and durability. Pb soil concentrations higher than 15000 mg kg-1 were found to heavily reduce the applicab…
Contactless magnetic excitation of acoustic cavitation in liquid metals
2015
A steady axial magnetic field is applied to a liquid metal zone heated by induction currents. The resulting alternating Lorentz force causes pressure oscillations that being strong enough lead to cavitation in the molten metal. Amplitude of the pressure oscillations is proportional to the product of the induced currents and the steady axial magnetic field induction. We follow an approach where the acoustic pressure is maximized by the induction currents. The onset of cavitation is identified by the occurrence of sub-harmonics of the drive frequency in sound recorded at the surface of the experimental cell. It is demonstrated that cavitation in a liquid metal may be excited by a superimposed…
Synthesis of (–)-(S)-Norlaudanosine, (+)-(R)-O,O-Dimethylcoclaurine, and (+)-(R)-Salsolidine by Alkylation of an α-Aminonitrile
2007
A short asymmetric synthesis of 1-substituted 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloids by deprotonation of an unprotected α-aminonitrile and alkylation of the resulting carbanion followed by spontaneous elimination of HCN and asymmetric reduction is described. An experimental methodology to study polymer crystallization under processing conditions. The influence of high cooling rates
2002
Abstract A new experimental route for investigating polymer crystallization under very high cooling rates (up to 2000°C/s) is described. A complete and exhaustive description of the apparatus employed for preparing thin quenched samples (100– 200 μm thick) is reported, the cooling mechanism and the temperature distribution across sample thickness is also analysed, showing that the final structure is determined only by the thermal history imposed by the fast quench apparatus. Details concerning the characterization techniques used to probe the final structure are reported, including density measurements and wide angle X-ray diffraction patterns. Experimental results concerning isotactic poly…

Microstructure-process relationship and reactivity at the nanoscale : a molecular dynamics study of Ni, Ni-Al, and Ti-Al metallic systems
2023
The process-microstructure relationship is central in materials science because the microstructure will determine the properties of the materials developed by the processes. In our work, we focused on different metallurgical processes by adopting a description at the atomic scale. This approach allows us to detect the elementary mechanisms that are at the origin of the observed microstructures without having to postulate macroscopic mechanisms or estimate the associated parameters. In this respect, molecular dynamics simulations provide a tool for "in-situ" observation of metallic systems as long as an atomic interaction potential is available. The originality of our approach consists in mo…
