Quantum dot-block copolymer hybrids with improved properties and their application to quantum dot light-emitting devices.

2009

To combine the optical properties of CdSe@ZnS quantum dots (QDs) with the electrical properties of semiconducting polymers, we prepared QD/polymer hybrids by grafting a block copolymer (BCP) containing thiol-anchoring moieties (poly(para-methyl triphenylamine-b-cysteamine acrylamide)) onto the surfaces of QDs through the ligand exchange procedure. The prepared QD/polymer hybrids possess improved processability such as enhanced solubility in various organic solvents as well as the film formation properties along with the improved colloidal stability derived from the grafted polymer shells. We also demonstrated light-emitting diodes based on QD/polymer hybrids, exhibiting the improved device …

Diffusion of oxygen molecules in fluorine-doped amorphous SiO2

2010

Abstract Effects of fluorine doping on the diffusion of interstitial oxygen molecules (O2) in amorphous SiO2 (a-SiO2) were compared to those obtained from a-SiO2 containing SiOH groups. Incorporation of moderate concentration ( ∼ 1 0 19  cm−3) of SiF groups gives rise to minor changes in diffusion parameters between 800 and 1100  ° C: only a slight decrease in solubility and an increase in the activation energy for diffusion can be detected. Incorporation of SiOH groups has similar weak effects on the solubility and activation energy for diffusion. These minor changes are most likely due to the enhancement of the flexibility of local Si–O network as a result of the dissociation of the netwo…

Advancements in Sustainable PVDF Copolymer Membrane Preparation Using Rhodiasolv® PolarClean As an Alternative Eco-Friendly Solvent

2021

In this work, Rhodiasolv® PolarClean was employed as a more sustainable solvent for the preparation of poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) flat sheet membranes via phase inversion technique by coupling vapour induced phase separation (VIPS) and non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) processes. Preliminary calculations based on Hansen solubility parameters well predicted the solubilization of the polymer in the selected solvent. The effect of exposure time on humidity and the influence of polyethylene glycol (PEG), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and sulfonated polyether sulfone (S-PES) on membrane properties and performance, were evaluated. Three different coagulation …

Charge State of Silver Halide Colloids Determines the Antibacterial Activity in Amorphous Calcium Phosphate

2013

Removal of bacteria is important not only at implantation, but after long-term implant/prosthesis use. This requires strategies that employ different approaches for combating bacteria. Halides have the potential of an additional mechanism, and together with silver may provide a more powerful antibacterial strategy. Silver iodide was synthesized as colloids with a positive and negative charge and incorporated into an amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) to provide a possible greater antibacterial action. Colloids were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and the charge measured by zeta potential. Phase analysis by X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the formation of b-AgI nanoparticles. Minimum …

Study of Morphology of Reactive Dissolution Interface Using Fractal Geometry

1996

J. Pharm. Sci. ISI Document Delivery No.: VF662 Times Cited: 7 Cited Reference Count: 15 Tromelin, A Gnanou, JC Andres, C Pourcelot, Y Chaillot, B; International audience; The determination of reactive fractal dimension was carried out using two forms of the Noyes-Whitney equation, -dQ/dt = K(Q/Q(0))(DR/3) and -d Q/dt = K' R(DR-3) using the Richardson plot on the basis of previous data obtained by dissolution of an orthoboric acid powder. The correlation of the results provided by the two ways of calculation allows proposal of the hypothesis that dissolution begins on a specific population of reactive sites and probably promotes the formation of microporous volumes or cracks.

Polymeric nanospheres as strategy to increase the amount of triclosan retained in the skin: passive diffusion vs. iontophoresis

2012

The aim of this study was to evaluate the passive and iontophoretic permeation of triclosan in human skin using a triclosan solution and triclosan-loaded cationic nanospheres in order to determine which of the two strategies is more effective in allowing the deposition of triclosan within the skin. Triclosan-loaded nanospheres were prepared by the emulsification-solvent displacement technique using aminoalkyl methacrylate (Eudragit® RL 100) as polymer matrix. Nanospheres of 261.0 ± 15.1 nm with a positive surface charge (Ψz = 26.0 ± 3.2 mV) were obtained. Drug loading was 62.0 ± 1.7%. Results demonstrated that the amount of triclosan retained within the skin was significantly greater (8.5-f…

Pickering Emulsions of Fluorinated TiO2: A New Route for Intensification of Photocatalytic Degradation of Nitrobenzene

2020

International audience; Fluorination of the TiO2 surface has been often reported as a tool to increase the photocatalytic efficiency due to the beneficial effects in terms of production of oxidizing radicals. Moreover, it is shown that the unique amphiphilic properties of the fluorinated TiO2 (TiO2-F) surface allow one to use this material as a stabilizer for the formulation of Pickering emulsions of poorly soluble pollutants such as nitrobenzene (NB) in water. The emulsions have been characterized in terms of size of the droplets, type of emulsion, possibility of phase inversion, contact angle measurements, and optical microscopy. The emulsified system presents micrometer-sized droplets of…

E-beam irradiation and UV photocrosslinking of microemulsion-laden poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) hydrogels for ‘‘in situ’’ encapsulation of volatile hy…

2011

Gelled microemulsions are the subject of considerable scientific and commercial interest. Many efforts are currently devoted to improving their toxicological profile and functioning as biocompatible diffusion barrier for the controlled delivery of hydrophobic compounds. In the present investigation, a non-ionic polymeric surfactant was chosen to generate an oil-in-water microemulsion of a model fragrance in the presence of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP). The microemulsion was then subjected to either electron-beam or UV-irradiation to induce free-radical crosslinking of PVP at low temperature and in the absence of crosslinking agents, catalysts and initiators. Irradiation conditions with…

Pressure dependence of the demixing of polymer solutions determined by viscometry

1981

From the break-down in the viscosity of a polymer solution, associated with the entrance into the two phase region, the pressure dependence of the demixing temperatures of solutions of polystyrene (M = 600.000) in cyclohexane, cyclopentane, diethylmalonate and 1-phenyldecane was measured up to 1000 bar. The application of pressure increases the solubility of polystyrene in cyclopentane and diethylmalonate, but decreases that in 1-phenyldecane; in the case of cyclohexane, a pressure of optimum miscibility is observed at ca. 120 bar.

Structure-properties relationships of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) filled PS nanocomposites

2012

The polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) additivated polystyrene (PS) based nanocomposites were pre- pared by melt processing and the structure-properties relationships of the POSS-PS systems were compared to those of the neat PS. In order to investigate the effect of these structural parameters on the final properties of the polymer nanocompos- ites, five different kinds of POSS samples were used, in particular, POSS with different inorganic cage and with different organic pendent groups. The rheological investigation suggests clearly that the POSS acts as a plasticizer and that the processability of the PS was positively modified. The affinity between the POSS samples and the PS ma…
