Isolated in-vitro perfusion of pig hearts obtained from the abattoir: an alternative to animal experiments?

Isolated pig hearts (German farm pigs) were characterized after global in-vivo ischaemia as a potential alternative to in-vivo animal studies. Hearts were harvested from adult farm swine at the abattoir 10.3 +/- 2.1 min after incision of the carotid artery. They were immediately perfused and thereafter stored in ice-cold cardioplegic (St Thomas's) solution. After 38 +/- 3 min, retrograde perfusion was started with oxygenated pig blood (37 degrees C; 5000 U Heparin.l-1; pH 7.38 +/- 0.1; 11 mmol glucose.l-1) at a flow rate of 85 ml.min-1 100 g-1 wet weight (gww-1) for 30 min (n = 10). Metals Recovery from Waste Pickling Solutions by Reactive Precipitation

Pickling is one of the most important steps in steel manufacturing industry. During the process, an acid reacts with the surface oxides causing metal ions accumulation in the pickling solution. Disposal of the waste acid represents a critical issue for the hot-dip galvanizing industry in terms of environmental damage and high costs. Thermal potential of ion-exchange membranes and its application to thermoelectric power generation

The low efficiency and high price of thermoelectric semiconductors has generated interest in unconventional forms of thermoelectric materials. In this article, ionic thermoelectricity has been studied with commercial ion-exchange membranes for different aqueous 1:1 electrolytes. The theory of thermal membrane potential has been derived taking into account the ionic heats of transport, the non-isothermal Donnan potentials, the temperature polarization, and the thermally-induced concentration polarization of the electrolyte. Experimental Tests to Validate a Simple Procedure to Design Dual-Diameter Drip Laterals on Flat Fields

Multiple-diameter laterals reduce the total cost in microirrigation systems, however, the length of each sublateral should be determined carefully to assure appro-priate performance of emitter flow rates. The most accurate method is the numerical trial and error, which is time-consuming. A series of research efforts have been made to propose simple analytical design procedures. Local thermal equilibrium and ideal gas Stephani universes

The Stephani universes that can be interpreted as an ideal gas evolving in local thermal equilibrium are determined. Five classes of thermodynamic schemes are admissible, which give rise to five classes of regular models and three classes of singular models. No Stephani universes exist representing an exact solution to a classical ideal gas (one for which the internal energy is proportional to the temperature). But some Stephani universes may approximate a classical ideal gas at first order in the temperature: all of them are obtained. Finally, some features about the physical behavior of the models are pointed out.

Experimental assessment of reverse electrodialysis in closed loop configuration fed by NH4HCO3-water solutions

Closed loop reverse electrodialysis is a novel technology for converting low-temperature waste heat into electric energy. This innovative heat engine consists of two units: (i) a reverse electrodialysis unit where power is produced exploiting the concentration difference between a diluted and a concentrated salt solution and (ii) a thermally driven regeneration unit where low-grade waste heat is used to re-establish the original salinity gradient between the two salt solutions. In vitro degradation of porous PLLA/pearl powder composite scaffolds

Abstract The in vitro degradation behavior of poly- l -lactide (PLLA), PLLA/aragonite pearl powder and PLLA/vaterite pearl powder scaffolds was investigated. The scaffolds were soaked in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) up to 200 days. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to observe any degradation of the scaffolds. Degradation behaviors such as changes in pH, porosity, bulk density, water absorption, weight loss and mechanical properties were discussed. Protein dynamics observed by tunable mid-IR quantum cascade lasers across the time range from 10 ns to 1 s

We have developed a spectrometer based on tunable quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) for recording time-resolved absorption spectra of proteins in the mid-infrared range. We illustrate its performance by recording time-resolved difference spectra of bacteriorhodopsin in the carboxylic range (1800–1700 cm− 1) and on the CO rebinding reaction of myoglobin (1960–1840 cm− 1), at a spectral resolution of 1 cm− 1. The spectrometric setup covers the time range from 4 ns to nearly a second with a response time of 10–15 ns.
