An extensive pattern of atypical neural speech-sound discrimination in newborns at risk of dyslexia.

2019

Objective: Identifying early signs of developmental dyslexia, associated with deficient speech-sound processing, is paramount to establish early interventions. We aimed to find early speech-sound processing deficiencies in dyslexia, expecting diminished and atypically lateralized event-related potentials (ERP) and mismatch responses (MMR) in newborns at dyslexia risk. Methods: ERPs were recorded to a pseudoword and its variants (vowel-duration, vowel-identity, and syllable-frequency changes) from 88 newborns at high or no familial risk. The response significance was tested, and group, laterality, and frontality effects were assessed with repeated-measures ANOVA. Results: An early positive a…

The “central dot sign” in acute epiploic appendagitis

2018

Epiploic appendagitis is the acute inflammation and infarction of epiploic appendages, commonly secondary to torsion. It is a great mimicker as its clinical manifestation may be similar to appendicitis, diverticulitis, or colitis. Focal abdominal pain, tenderness, and mild pyrexia are clinical features of the condition [1]. Epiploic appendages are pedunculated adipose structures which extend from the serosal surface of the colon, along the free taenia and taenia omentalis. They are abundant in the caecum and sigmoid colon and absent in the rectum

Median arcuate ligament syndrome, a rare case of chronic abdominal pain

2018

The median arcuate ligament syndrome (MALS) is a rare disease characterized by abdominal pain caused by the external compression of the celiac artery by the median arcuate ligament. Surgical treatment is indicated, but given the non-specific symptoms, these patients are often hospitalized in the Departments of Internal Medicine where the diagnosis may be unknown. We present a case of MALS admitted to our Internal Medicine Division. An abdominal ultrasound in a woman with longstanding abdominal pain showed elevated celiac artery velocities during forced expiration. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) of the abdomen showed stenosis of the origin of the celiac artery and confirmed the diagno…

Ultrasonography (US) in the assessment of pediatric non traumatic gastrointestinal emergencies

2013

AbstractBackgroundNon traumatic gastrointestinal emergencies in the children and neonatal patient is a dilemma for the radiologist in the emergencies room and they presenting characteristics ultrasound features on the longitudinal and axial axis. The most frequent emergencies are : appendicitis, intussusceptions, hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, volvulus due to intestinal malrotation. The aim of this article is to familiarize the reader with the US features.MethodsA retrospective analysis of 200 ultrasound examinations performed in neonatal and children patients with fever, abdominal pain, leukocytosis, vomiting and diarrhea were evaluated.ResultsOf 200 exame 50 cases of intussusceptions, 100…

Sound conversion phenomena at the free surface of liquid helium. I. Calculation of the coefficients of reflection, transmission, and transformation o…

1980

On the basis of a set of boundary conditions describing quite generally mass and energy transport processes across the free surface of helium II, the acoustic coefficients of reflection, transmission, and transformation of first sound, second sound, and the sound wave propagating in the vapor are calculated in the case of perpendicular incidence of sound waves against the liquid-vapor phase boundary. Considering rigorously the influences of the Onsager surface coefficients, the isobaric thermal expansion coefficients, and the thermal conductivities of the liquid and the vapor, we derive sets of equations from which the acoustic coefficients are determined numerically. For estimations, simpl…

On the variations of acoustic absorption peak with particle velocity in micro-perforated panels at high level of excitation.

2010

The acoustic behavior of micro-perforated panels (MPP) is studied theoretically and experimentally at high level of pressure excitation. A model based on Forcheimer's regime of flow velocity in the perforations is proposed. This model is valid at relatively high Reynolds numbers and low Mach numbers. The experimental method consists in measuring the acoustical pressure at three different positions in an impedance tube, the two measurement positions usually considered in an impedance tube and one measurement in the vicinity of the rear surface of the MPP. The impedance tube is equipped with a pressure driver instead of the usual loudspeaker and capable of delivering a high sound pressure lev…

Experimental investigation of holes interaction effect on the sound absorption coefficient of micro-perforated panels under high and medium sound lev…

2011

Abstract This paper experimentally investigates the holes interaction effect on the sound absorption coefficient of micro-perforated panels under high and medium sound levels. The theoretical formulations are based on a semi-empirical approach and the use of Fok’s function to model the acoustic surface impedance. For the high sound level regime, an empirical power law involving three coefficients is adapted. It is shown theoretically and experimentally that these coefficients can lead to optimized absorption performance and particularly, a formula relating the critical Reynolds number (Reynolds number value after which the absorption coefficient decreases with the increase of sound level) a…

Subjective Evaluation of Video on Demand Systems Using Different Network Connections

2009

Nowadays, society makes use of new technologies as they appear. Due to this boom, the use of resources via web is increasing notably. In of training and education cases, companies such as universities are offering tele-learning platforms to complement and facilitate the learning process. Some of these called e-learning platforms can have explanatory videos as a resource for training. For the codification of these videos, we have to use parameters which provide a trade-off between the video sizes to be transmitted that optimize bandwidth and video and audio quality. This paper presents a subjective study of the video quality on transmission depending on the types of users’ network access to …

Accurate estimation of retinal vessel width using bagged decision trees and an extended multiresolution Hermite model.

2012

We present an algorithm estimating the width of retinal vessels in fundus camera images. The algorithm uses a novel parametric surface model of the cross-sectional intensities of vessels, and ensembles of bagged decision trees to estimate the local width from the parameters of the best-fit surface. We report comparative tests with REVIEW, currently the public database of reference for retinal width estimation, containing 16 images with 193 annotated vessel segments and 5066 profile points annotated manually by three independent experts. Comparative tests are reported also with our own set of 378 vessel widths selected sparsely in 38 images from the Tayside Scotland diabetic retinopathy scre…

The influence of physical activity during youth on structural and functional properties of the Achilles tendon

2013

Achilles tendinopathy is a highly prevalent sports injury. Animal studies show a growth response in tendons in response to loading in the immature phase but not after puberty maturation. The aim of this investigation was to examine the structural and material properties in long distance runners who were either physically active (HAY) or inactive (LAY) in young age. Twelve men in HAY group and eight men in LAY group participated. Structural, functional, and biochemical properties of Achilles tendon were estimated from magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound video recordings, mechanical tests, and tendon biopsies, respectively. There was no difference between the groups with respect to tendon …
