The occurrence of adverse reactions is decreasing since the introduction of non-ionic contrast media. Anaphylactoid reactions during general anaesthesia are rare and hitherto only documented with the administration of ionic compounds. We report an episode of hypotension, tachycardia, bronchospasm and urticaria following application of a non-ionic contrast medium (Iopamidol) during isoflurane anaesthesia. We conclude that a combinent use of anaesthesia and non-ionic contrast media does not guaranty protection from anaphylactoid reactions to iodinated radiopaque compounds.

Background: Nasal and paranasal cavities are supposed to contribute substantially to the vocal tract resonator properties. However, their acoustical effects as well as the effects of sinus surgery on the voice remain unclear. In this work we investigate resonance phenomena of paranasal sinuses prior to and after various rhinosurgical procedures in cadaveric human sinonasal tracts and corresponding 3D casts. WWOX-related encephalopathies: delineation of the phenotypical spectrum and emerging genotype-phenotype correlation

International audience; BACKGROUND:Homozygous mutations in WWOX were reported in eight individuals of two families with autosomal recessive spinocerebellar ataxia type 12 and in two siblings with infantile epileptic encephalopathy (IEE), including one who deceased prior to DNA sampling.METHODS:By combining array comparative genomic hybridisation, targeted Sanger sequencing and next generation sequencing, we identified five further patients from four families with IEE due to biallelic alterations of WWOX.RESULTS:We identified eight deleterious WWOX alleles consisting in four deletions, a four base-pair frameshifting deletion, one missense and two nonsense mutations. PURPOSE OF REVIEW This article presents an overview of the most recent and important strategies to reduce secondary brain damage. RECENT FINDING There is currently no magic bullet available to protect the brain after neuronal injury. This is related to the complex pathophysiology of cerebral ischemia, which makes it unlikely that a single pharmacological intervention results in sustained neuroprotection. Analyses of clinical studies reveal that acute physiologic derangements (e.g. fever, hypertension and hypotension, hypoxemia, hypercapnia, hyperglycemia) are the most important predictors of unfavorable outcome after brain injury and have to be treated. Injection pressure mapping of intraneural vs. perineural injections: further lessons from cadaveric studies.

Background The aim of the study was to investigate the difference between intraneural and perineural injection pressures in human cadavers. Targeted nerves included the cervical roots, the supraclavicular and infraclavicular brachial plexus, the sciatic-subgluteal nerve and the common peroneal and tibial nerves. Methods Ten readings were obtained for each nerve location. Over ten seconds, 1 mL of 0.9% NaCl was injected - deliberately slower than in clinical practice to eliminate the risk of aberrant readings relating to the speed of injection. Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to compare tentorial incision (group A) versus retraction and tack up suture (group B) of the tentorial edge during the subtemporal approach for surgery in the high basilar region. Design 24 cadaveric dissections and 4 clinical cases of aneurysms of the high basilar region are presented.
