One Alternation Can Be More Powerful Than Randomization in Small and Fast Two-Way Finite Automata

We show a family of languages that can be recognized by a family of linear-size alternating one-way finite automata with one alternation but cannot be recognized by any family of polynomial-size bounded-error two-way probabilistic finite automata with the expected runtime bounded by a polynomial. In terms of finite automata complexity theory this means that neither 1Σ2 nor 1Π2 is contained in 2P2.

Hopcroft's algorithm and tree-like automata

Minimizing a deterministic finite automata (DFA) is a very important problem in theory of automata and formal languages. Hopcroft's algorithm represents the fastest known solution to the such a problem. In this paper we analyze the behavior of this algorithm on a family binary automata, called tree-like automata, associated to binary labeled trees constructed by words. We prove that all the executions of the algorithm on tree-like automata associated to trees, constructed by standard words, have running time with the same asymptotic growth rate. Quantum Finite Multitape Automata

Quantum finite automata were introduced by C. Moore, J. P. Crutchfield [4], and by A. Kondacs and J. Watrous [3]. This notion is not a generalization of the deterministic finite automata. Moreover, in [3] it was proved that not all regular languages can be recognized by quantum finite automata. A. Ambainis and R. Freivalds [1] proved that for some languages quantum finite automata may be exponentially more concise rather than both deterministic and probabilistic finite automata. Probabilistic Reversible Automata and Quantum Automata

To study relationship between quantum finite automata and probabilistic finite automata, we introduce a notion of probabilistic reversible automata (PRA, or doubly stochastic automata). We find that there is a strong relationship between different possible models of PRA and corresponding models of quantum finite automata. We also propose a classification of reversible finite 1-way automata.

Spatial Search on Grids with Minimum Memory

We study quantum algorithms for spatial search on finite dimensional grids. Patel et al. and Falk have proposed algorithms based on a quantum walk without a coin, with different operators applied at even and odd steps. Until now, such algorithms have been studied only using numerical simulations. In this paper, we present the first rigorous analysis for an algorithm of this type, showing that the optimal number of steps is $O(\sqrt{N\log N})$ and the success probability is $O(1/\log N)$, where $N$ is the number of vertices. This matches the performance achieved by algorithms that use other forms of quantum walks.

We introduce a new type of internal memory for finite automata and real-time automata. Instead of using tapes with a prescribed Euclidean structure (one-dimensional or two-dimensional tapes) we allow arbitrary group structure of the internal memory of the automata.

AbstractIn this paper we investigate the minimality problem of DFAs by varying the set of final states. In other words, we are interested on how the choice of the final states can affect the minimality of the automata. The state-pair graph is a useful tool to investigate such a problem. Discrete wavelet transform based multispectral filter array demosaicking

International audience; The idea of colour filter array may be adapted to multi-spectral image acquisition by integrating more filter types into the array, and developing associated demosaicking algorithms. Several methods employing discrete wavelet transform (DWT) have been proposed for CFA demosaicking. In this work, we put forward an extended use of DWT for mul-tispectral filter array demosaicking. The extension seemed straightforward, however we observed striking results. This work contributes to better understanding of the issue by demonstrating that spectral correlation and spatial resolution of the images exerts a crucial influence on the performance of DWT based demosaicking.

Spatial and seasonal changes of dissolved and particulate organic C in the North Sea

Sampling of the central region of the North Sea was carried out to study the spatial and seasonal changes of dissolved and particulate organic C (DOC and POC, respectively). The surface waters were collected during four cruises over a year (Autumn 2004–Summer 2005). DOC and POC concentrations were measured using high temperature catalytic oxidation methods. The surface water concentrations of DOC and POC were spatially and temporally variable. There were significantly different concentrations of DOC and POC between the inshore and offshore waters in winter and summer only, with no clear trend in autumn and spring. Aim  We test the similarity–distance decay hypothesis on a marine host–parasite system, inferring the relationships from abundance data gathered at the lowest scale of parasite community organization (i.e. that of the individual host).
