Scattering and re-absorption have been recognized as relevant aspects for the interpretation of solar induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) in vegetation remote sensing. In an earlier study [Yang and Van der Tol, RSE 215, 97–108, 2018] we addressed the problem of scattering and re-absorption of near-infrared fluorescence in the vegetation canopy. In this study we analyse within-leaf re-absorption of both red and near-infrared fluorescence using the radiative transfer model Fluspect. The leaf scattering determines the ratio of backward to total leaf fluorescence emission Fb/(Fb + Ff). Relating Hyperspectral Airborne Data to Ground Measurements in a Complex and Discontinuous Canopy

The work described in this paper is aimed at validating hyperspectral airborne reflectance data collected during the Regional Experiments For Land-atmosphere EXchanges (REFLEX) campaign. Ground reflectance data measured in a vineyard were compared with airborne reflectance data. A sampling strategy and subsequent ground data processing had to be devised so as to capture a representative spectral sample of this complex crop. A linear model between airborne and ground data was tried and statistically tested. Results reveal a sound correspondence between ground and airborne reflectance data (R2 > 0.97), validating the atmospheric correction of the latter.
Determining cantilever stiffness from thermal noise

We critically discuss the extraction of intrinsic cantilever properties, namely eigenfrequency fn, quality factor Qn and specifically the stiffness kn of the nth cantilever oscillation mode from thermal noise by an analysis of the power spectral density of displacement fluctuations of the cantilever in contact with a thermal bath. The practical applicability of this approach is demonstrated for several cantilevers with eigenfrequencies ranging from 50 kHz to 2 MHz. Intraoperative monitoring of cerebral ischemia with shunting during carotid endarterectomy (CEA) remains controversial. Our objective was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of BIS changes during carotid clamping in relation to shunted patients in awake CEA.Eighty CEAs under cervical block were included. Re-investigation of the conformational interconversion of the 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexahydropyrene cation radical by EPR, ENDOR and TRIPLE spectroscopy

The conformational interconversion of the 1,2,3,6,7,8-hexahydropyrene cation radical has been re-examined by EPR, ENDOR and TRIPLE spectroscopy, and the Arrhenius plot is presented for a wider temperature range than that used earlier. The EPR spectra were measured from 143 to 369 K and the ENDOR spectra from 143 to 263 K. The thermodynamic constants of the conformational interconversion of the cation radical were determined on the basis of the temperature-dependent spectra. The high-resolution spectra clearly show that there are two overlapping spectra at low temperature, and this is confirmed by simulation.
(H, ρ)-induced dynamics and the quantum game of life

Abstract We propose an extended version of quantum dynamics for a certain system S , whose evolution is ruled by a Hamiltonian H, its initial conditions, and a suitable set ρ of rules, acting repeatedly on S . The resulting dynamics is not necessarily periodic or quasi-periodic, as one could imagine for conservative systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom. In fact, it may have quite different behaviors depending on the explicit forms of H, ρ as well as on the initial conditions. After a general discussion on this (H, ρ)-induced dynamics, we apply our general ideas to extend the classical game of life, and we analyze several aspects of this extension.
