Spectroscopic studies with the PRISMA-CLARA set-up

2010

The large solid angle magnetic spectrometer for heavy ions PRISMA, installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL), was operated up to the end of March 2008 in conjunction with the highly efficient CLARA set-up. It allowed to carry out nuclear structure and reaction mechanism studies in several mass regions of the nuclide chart. Results obtained in the vicinity of the island of inversion and for the heavy iron and chromium isotopes are presented in this contribution. The status of the new focal plane detectors specifically designed for light ions and slow moving heavy ions is also reported.

Calibration of the RPC charge readout in the ARGO-YBJ experiment

2012

""The charge readout of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) is implemented in the ARGO-YBJ experiment to measure the charged particle density of the shower front up to 10^4\\\/m^2, enabling the study of the primary cosmic rays with energies in the ''knee'' region. As the first time for RPCs being used this way, a telescope with RPCs and scintillation detectors is setup to calibrate the number of charged particles hitting a RPC versus its charge readout. Air shower particles are taken as the calibration beam. The telescope was tested at sea level and then moved to the ARGO-YBJ site for coincident operation with the ARGO-YBJ experiment. The charge readout shows good linearity with the particle de…

The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) for Athena

2014

Athena is designed to implement the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme selected by the European Space Agency for the second large mission of its Cosmic Vision program. The Athena science payload consists of a large aperture high angular resolution X-ray optics (2 m2 at 1 keV) and twelve meters away, two interchangeable focal plane instruments: the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) and the Wide Field Imager. The X-IFU is a cryogenic X-ray spectrometer, based on a large array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), oering 2.5 eV spectral resolution, with approximately 5" pixels, over a field of view of 5' in diameter. In this paper, we present the X-IFU detector and readout electronics princi…

Direct excitation of the “dark”b3Πstate predicted by deperturbation analysis of theA1Σ+−b3Πcomplex in KCs

2010

The diode-laser-induced fluorescence spectra $b {}^{3}{\ensuremath{\Pi}}_{\ensuremath{\Omega}=0}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{X}^{ 1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ originated from the rovibronic levels of the ``dark'' triplet $b {}^{3}{\ensuremath{\Pi}}_{\ensuremath{\Omega}=0}^{+}$ state of KCs dimers were recorded with a Fourier transform spectrometer with a resolution of 0.03 cm${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. Term values of 30 rovibronic levels $({v}_{b0}^{*}\ensuremath{\in}[14,18];{J}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\in}[47,134])$ below the minimum of perturbing $A {}^{1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ state were determined with 0.003--0.01 cm${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ uncertainty. The optimal excitation and dete…

Trap-assisted decay spectroscopy with ISOLTRAP

2012

Penning traps are excellent high-precision mass spectrometers for radionuclides. The high-resolving power used for cleaning isobaric and even isomeric contaminants can be exploited to improve decay-spectroscopy studies by delivering purified samples. An apparatus allowing trap-assisted decay spectroscopy has been coupled to the ISOLTRAP mass spectrometer at ISOLDE/CERN. The results from studies with stable and radioactive ions show that the setup can be used to perform decay studies on purified short-lived nuclides and to assist mass measurements. The large-area micro-channel plate entrance detector of the heavy-ion magnetic spectrometer PRISMA

2005

This paper describes the entrance detector of the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA recently installed at Legnaro. The detector is based on rectangular (80 x 100 mm(2)) Micro-Channel Plates (MCP). It provides a fast time signal and its position-sensitive anode allows to extract the X and Y information. It exploits an electrostatic field for the acceleration of secondary electrons from a thin Carbon foil (similar or equal to 20 mu g/cm(2)) onto the MCP assembly. The electrons are guided by a parallel magnetic field. Good performances were obtained in the laboratory tests. The detector is presently installed at the entrance of PRISMA and gives resolutions <= 400 ps in time, and 1 mm in both X and …

Linestrengths of the ν2 and ν4 bands of 12CH4 and 13CH4

1989

Absorption spectra recorded on the high-resolution Fourier transform spectrometer at Kitt Peak National Observatory/National Solar Observatory were used to measure individual line strengths of the nu(2) and nu(4) bands of (C-12)H4 and (C-13)H4. The measurements were used to obtain expressions that could be used to correctly predict individual line strengths through five orders of magnitude of absorption strength and high values of J-prime. Transition strengths were modeled using the dyad formalism of two interacting bands and a seven-term second-order dipole-moment expansion. The successful fitting of these data indicates that the method can be used to model measurements of 2- to 5-percent …
