Studies on the metabolism of mitragynine, the main alkaloid of the herbal drug Kratom, in rat and human urine using liquid chromatography-linear ion …

2009

Mitragynine (MG) is an indole alkaloid of the Thai medicinal plant Mitragyna speciosa (Kratom in Thai) and reported to have opioid agonistic properties. Because of its stimulant and euphoric effects, Kratom is used as a herbal drug of abuse. The aim of the presented study is to identify the phase I and II metabolites of MG in rat and human urine after solid-phase extraction (SPE) using liquid chromatography-linear ion trap mass spectrometry providing detailed structure information in the MSn mode particularly with high resolution. The seven identified phase I metabolites indicated that MG was metabolized by hydrolysis of the methylester in position 16, O-demethylation of the 9-methoxy group…

Miniature diamond-anvil cells for FTIR-microspectroscopy of small quantities of biosamples.

2018

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy techniques and data analyses have become widely available, are easy to use, and are convenient for studies of various biosamples, especially in biomedical science. Yet, cultivation of cells and purification of cell components are costly, often methodically challenging, and time and labor consuming. Therefore, reduction of the sample amount is of high value. Here we propose a novel method for the analysis of small quantities of biosamples by FTIR-microscopy of dry films using a diamond-anvil cell (DAC). This approach allows us to decrease the sample volume at least a hundred times compared to that for a high-throughput screening device (HTS-XT, …

Essential oil counterfeit identification through middle infrared spectroscopy

2018

Abstract Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) has been employed for a fast quality control of commercial essential oils from different plant species. 47 samples were obtained from Algerian and Spanish market and directly measured, without any previous treatment, by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), in the wavenumber region between 4000 and 550 cm−1. Pure essential oils were obtained by hydro- and steam-distillation extraction methods and their ATR spectra obtained. Results found evidenced the presence of solvents in some commercial formulations and permitted a rapid authentication of pure essential oils correctly extracted from those diluted. The propo…

Origin based classification of crude oils by infrared spectrometry and chemometrics

2019

Abstract Crude oil samples from different Iranian petrol resources in both, raw and mixture forms have been characterized by attenuated total reflectance mid infrared spectroscopy. Obtained spectra were classified by chemometric techniques to propose a method for geological based classification of crude oil samples. Totally 251 samples from 7 petrol fields and 3 mixtures were analyzed. Mean centering and principal component analysis (PCA) supported – leverage value based outlier detection were used as preprocessing approaches. PCA, cluster analysis and soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) were utilized to classify the spectra. Obtained results confirmed that SIMCA is a robust …

Simultaneous determination of imidacloprid, carbendazim, methiocarb and hexythiazox in peaches and nectarines by liquid chromatography–mass spectrome…

2002

Abstract A liquid chromatographic (LC) atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometric (MS) method is described for determining imidacloprid, carbendazim, methiocarb and hexythiazox in peaches and nectarines. The samples were extracted with ethyl acetate and anhydrous sodium sulfate. Recoveries yield for spiking samples were ranged from 64±9% (R.S.D) for carbendazim to 108±14% (R.S.D.) for hexythiazox at the concentration of 0.1 mg kg−1 (n=5). The correlation coefficients were greater than 0.998 over the range between 0.02 and 2 mg kg−1. The limits of quantitation (LOQ) were 0.02 mg kg−1 for all the pesticides. The applicability of the method to detect and quantify imidacloprid,…

A clean analytical method for the spectrophotometric determination of formetanate incorporating an on-line microwave assisted hydrolysis step

1999

Abstract A fast and completely automated procedure is proposed for the spectrophotometric determination of formetanate in waters by means of its reaction with p-aminophenol (PAP). The method involves the on-line alkaline hydrolysis of formetanate to m-aminophenol (MAP) and its reaction, in the presence of KIO 4 as oxidant agent, with the quinoneimine form of PAP, to form a blue indophenol dye which absorbs at 576 nm. The on-line hydrolysis can be carried out in a 6 m reaction coil located inside the cavity of a domestic microwave oven operated at 650 W, or in a 4 m reaction coil located inside the cavity of a Microdigest 301 microwave system operated at 60 W and allows us, in both cases, a …

An ultrasound-assisted digestion method for the determination of toxic element concentrations in ash samples by inductively coupled plasma optical em…

2007

Abstract A method of ultrasound-assisted digestion followed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) used for the determination of toxic element concentrations (arsenic, barium, cobalt, copper, lead, nickel, strontium, vanadium and zinc) in ash samples was developed. All the measurements were performed in robust plasma conditions which were tested by measuring the Mg(II) 280.270 nm/Mg(I) 285.213 nm line intensity ratios. The highest line intensity ratios were observed when a nebulizer gas flow of 0.6 L min−1, auxiliary gas flow of 0.2 L min−1 and plasma power of 1400 W were used for radially viewed plasma. The analysis of SRM 1633b showed that the ultrasound-ass…

Application of microwaves dielectric spectroscopy for controlling pork meat (Longissimus dorsi) salting process

2010

Abstract Salting treatment is a common operation in the production of high quality meat products, one of its main problems is the difficulty to control the simultaneous water and salt fluxes into the product and control the protein fibers transformation throughout process. Dielectric properties of salted porcine meat are strongly related to its structure and composition. Thus, dielectric properties measurement appears as a promising method for controlling on-line the salting process in meat industry. Dielectric spectroscopy studies have been performed on raw and salted Longissimus dorsi pork samples. Dielectric spectra were measured in the frequency range from 500 MHz to 20 GHz by an Agilen…

Silica Entrapment for Significantly Stabilized, Energy-Conducting Light-Harvesting Complex (LHCII)

2014

The major light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b complex (LHCII) of the photosynthetic apparatus in green plants consists of a membrane protein and numerous noncovalently bound pigments that make up about one-third of the molecular mass of the pigment-protein complex. Due to this high pigment density, LHCII is potentially interesting as a light-harvesting component in synthetic constructs. However, for such applications its stability needs to be significantly improved. In this work, LHCII was dramatically stabilized by enclosing it within polymerizing colloidal silica. The entrapped LHCII stayed functional at 50 °C for up to 24 h instead of a few minutes in detergent solution and clearly showed e…

High-resolution gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric determination of neutral chlorinated aromatic sulphur compounds in stack gas samples

1993

Abstract Four stack gas samples from waste incineration were analysed by high-resolution GC-MS for neutral chlorinated aromatic sulphur compounds such as polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes, thianthrenes and diphenyl sulphides. Samples were analysed tentatively also for some methylated derivatives of these compounds. The stack gas samples had earlier been found to contain some tri- and tetrachlorodiphenyl sulphides. Two of the stack gas samples contained tetra- and pentachlorodibenzothiophenes. One sample was strongly suspected to contain some tri- and tetrachlorothianthrenes in low concentrations. No methylated derivatives of these compounds could be found. Polychlorothianthrenes, some polyc…
