Old French Parataxis: syntactic variant or stylistic variation?
2012
The existence of paratactic constructions in Old French is a well-known fact, as in the following: Co sent Rollanto la veue ad perdue‘Roland feels (that) he has lost his sight’ (Chanson de Roland2297). These structures alternate with structures containing que: Co sent Rollant que s’espee li tolt‘Roland feels that his sword has been taken from him’ (Chanson de Roland2284). Although traditional philologists note that different types of asyndetic subordinate clauses exist, they do not provide an explanation of how and why such structures alternate with those introduced by que. Moreover, a detailed analysis reveals that the distribution of paratactic constructions does not seem to be homogeneou…
Effects of functional endoscopic sinus surgery on the acoustics of the sinonasal tract
2017
Background: Nasal and paranasal cavities are supposed to contribute substantially to the vocal tract resonator properties. However, their acoustical effects as well as the effects of sinus surgery on the voice remain unclear. In this work we investigate resonance phenomena of paranasal sinuses prior to and after various rhinosurgical procedures in cadaveric human sinonasal tracts and corresponding 3D casts. Methodology: Nasal and paranasal cavities of formalin-preserved cadavers and corresponding 3D replicas were excited by sine tone sweeps from an earphone placed in the epipharynx. The response was picked up by a microphone at the nostrils. Different FESS procedures were performed and the a…
Sound Event Envelope Estimation in Polyphonic Mixtures
2019
Sound event detection is the task of identifying automatically the presence and temporal boundaries of sound events within an input audio stream. In the last years, deep learning methods have established themselves as the state-of-the-art approach for the task, using binary indicators during training to denote whether an event is active or inactive. However, such binary activity indicators do not fully describe the events, and estimating the envelope of the sounds could provide more precise modeling of their activity. This paper proposes to estimate the amplitude envelopes of target sound event classes in polyphonic mixtures. For training, we use the amplitude envelopes of the target sounds…
An Efficient Implementation of Parallel Parametric HRTF Models for Binaural Sound Synthesis in Mobile Multimedia
2020
The extended use of mobile multimedia devices in applications like gaming, 3D video and audio reproduction, immersive teleconferencing, or virtual and augmented reality, is demanding efficient algorithms and methodologies. All these applications require real-time spatial audio engines with the capability of dealing with intensive signal processing operations while facing a number of constraints related to computational cost, latency and energy consumption. Most mobile multimedia devices include a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) that is primarily used to accelerate video processing tasks, providing high computational capabilities due to its inherent parallel architecture. This paper describes…
Where lol is: function and position of lol used as a discourse marker in YouTube comments
2020
Lol is probably one of the most popular words in computer-mediated communication. It is generally taken to be the acronym of “laughing out loud”, but it is not always used to indicate a humorous response; rather, it is multifunctional. Drawing on previous studies of the different functions of lol, this paper explores a possible correlation between the position and function of non-lexicalized lol in the specific context of YouTube comments. The hypothesis is that the function of lol largely depends on its position: clause-initial lol is not used with the same functions as clause-final lol. The data for the study come from the comment threads of three popular YouTube videos posted in 2017, 20…
Fonoaudiología y derechos humanos
2018
COOPERATION BETWEEN SPEECH AND LANGUGAGE THERAPIST AND FAMILY TO PROMOTE READING SKILLS IN FIRST GRADE PUPILS
2019
Reading skills are one of essential skills to acquire literacy and be successful in everyday life in school and after it. Literacy skills are complicated for pupils with speech and language disorders, it is responsibility not only of speech and language therapists, but also of family to help these children to become literate. Situation in Latvia is different in different educational institutions, but we have to try our best to involve parents/family to be a part of pupil’s everyday activities. The aim of the article is to state the necessity of cooperation and to explore what kind of cooperation is effective in acquiring reading skills in first grade pupils. Based on the scientific literatur…
Time-Course of Grammatical Processing in Deaf Readers: An Eye-Movement Study.
2019
Abstract Twenty participants who were deaf and 20 chronological age-matched participants with typical hearing (TH) (mean age: 12 years) were asked to judge the correctness of written sentences with or without a grammatically incongruent word while their eye movements were registered. TH participants outperformed deaf participants in grammaticality judgment accuracy. For both groups, First Pass and Total Fixation Times of target words in correct trials were significantly longer in the incongruent condition than in the congruent one. However, whereas TH students showed longer First Pass in the target area than deaf students across congruity conditions, deaf students made more fixations than t…
Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale (VTDS) and Voice Symptom Scale (VoiSS) in the early identification of Italian teachers with voice disorders
2019
Abstract Introduction The current Italian law does not include any guidance regarding voice education, prevention of voice disorders and screening in subjects with high vocal loading such as teachers. Objectives We aimed to check the correlation between the Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale (VTDS) with the Voice Symptom Scale (VoiSS) for the evaluation of Italian teachers. In addition, we aimed to investigate whether there are differences in the frequency and intensity of discomfort symptoms in teachers with disabilities comparing vocal tract discomfort symptoms in teachers with high risk (HRVD) and low risk (LRVD) of vocal disorders according to the VoiSS cutoff (> 15.5). Methods We analyzed…
