Characterization of carob germplasm (Ceratonia siliquaL.) in Sicily

1997

SummarySixteen carob cultivars were studied to evaluate pulp and seed yield with regard to endosperm percentage, to determine the overall degree of polymorphism of the characters and to detect similarities among cultivars. Bean size and numbers of normal and aborted seeds were characters with a certain degree of polymorphism. The low between-year variability observed suggests that differences in the variables could be attributed to genetic factors. A high year-to-year variation was observed only for the number of aborted seeds. Seed characteristics showed small changes both between years and among cultivars. Out of all the variables, PCA identified four principal components that explained m…

Identification of a positively evolving putative binding region with increased variability in posttranslational motifs in zonadhesin MAM domain 2.

2005

Positive selection has been shown to be pervasive in sex-related proteins of many metazoan taxa. However, we are only beginning to understand molecular evolutionary processes on the lineage to humans. To elucidate the evolution of proteins involved in human reproduction, we studied the sequence evolution of MAM domains of the sperm-ligand zonadhesin in respect to single amino acid sites, solvent accessibility, and posttranslational modification. GenBank-data were supplemented by new cDNA-sequences of a representative non-human primate panel. Solvent accessibility predictions identified a probably exposed fragment of 30 amino acids belonging to MAM domain 2 (i.e., MAM domain 3 in mouse). The…

Obstetric and Neonatal Outcome of Pregnancies Fathered by Males on Immunosuppression After Solid Organ Transplantation

2015

Immunosuppressive drugs may influence spermatogenesis, but little is known about outcome of pregnancies fathered by transplanted males. We estimated risk of adverse outcomes in pregnancies (with data after the first trimester) fathered by males that had undergone organ transplantation and were treated with immunosuppression. A population-based study, linking data from the Norwegian transplant registry and the Medical Birth Registry of Norway during 1967-2009 was designed. All Norwegian men undergoing solid organ transplantation were included. Odds ratios for major malformations, preeclampsia, preterm delivery (<37 weeks) and small-for-gestational-age were obtained using logistic regression.…

Intracytoplasmic Testicular Sperm Injection: An Effective Treatment for Otherwise Intractable Obstructive Azoospermia

1995

AbstractPurpose: We evaluated the efficacy of intracytoplasmic sperm injection with testicular spermatozoa.Materials and Methods: Intracytoplasmic sperm injection was performed with spermatozoa obtained from testicular biopsy specimens in 15 patients with obstructive azoospermia, in whom standard microsurgical procedures were not feasible or had previously failed. Results: Fertilization was achieved in 14 to 15 cycles. Mean fertilization rate per cycle was 63.6 percent. Four clinical pregnancies occurred, for a pregnancy rate of 26.7 percent per started cycle and 28.6 percent per transfer. Conclusions: Intracytoplasmic testicular sperm injection is followed by high fertilization rates, and of…

Gonadotropic Therapy in Men with Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism

1984

Many therapeutic regimens, differing in dose and duration, have been employed in the treatment of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. This study presents the results from a regimen of hCG plus hMG plus testosterone combined treatment in 15 patients affected by selective hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. The patients were homogeneous in age (16–23 years), testicular size, aspermia, absence of prior hormonal treatment, and normal karyotype. They were administered 5000 IU of hCG plus 75 IU of hMG twice a week for two months and a single dose of depo-testosterone (250 mg) in the third month. This therapeutic plan was carried out continuously for eight three-month cycles (24 months). Sexual maturation a…

Sperm Telomere Length in Men with Normal and Abnormal semen Parameters. A Pilot Study

2019

Objective: Male infertility is a growing social problem. The measurement of telomere length may be a new marker that can help to assess reproductive age of males and assess the chances of in vitro fertilization. Aim: The aim of our study was to investigate whether there are any differences between telomere length in men with normal and abnormal semen parameters. Materials and Methods: Telomere length was analyzed in 17 patients with normal and 28 patients with abnormal semen parameters using the telomeric repeat amplification protocol and Quantitative Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR). Results: Mean sperm telomere length in all donors was 49±24kbp per haploid genome. However, patie…
