Localization and Activity of Naphthylamidases in Germinating Seeds of Scots Pine, Pinus sylvestris

1976

Extracts prepared from endosperms of germinating seeds of Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris L., rapidly hydrolysed the β-naphthylamides of L-phenylalanine and L-leucine optimally at pH 6.5 and that of L-arginine at pH 7.7. Disc electrophoresis followed by activity staining showed that the activities were due to two naphthylamidases (aminopeptidases) with different substrate specificities. Seeds were allowed to germinate at 20°C on agar gel in the dark and the activities on the three substrates were assayed from separated endosperms and seedlings at various stages of germination. The activities in the endosperm of resting seeds were relatively high and they remained unchanged throughout the perio…

A barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) LEA3 protein, HVA1, is abundant in protein storage vacuoles

1996

The HVA1 protein belongs to the LEA3 group, which is expressed during the late stage of seed maturation. It is also induced by exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) and a variety of environmental stresses in germinating barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). In the present work, the potential role of HVA1 was investigated by studying its tissue distribution and subcellular localization in mature and stressed seeds by immuno-microscopic methods. In the mature seed, HVA1 protein was detected in all tissues except the non-living starchy endosperm. During germination the amount of HVA1 protein decreased but did not totally disappear. Incubation with 100 μM ABA, cold treatment or drought stress dramatically incre…

ChemInform Abstract: Synthesis of New Bis(tetrahydropyrrolo[3,4-b]carbazoles) with a Functionalized Diaryl Spacer.

2010

Some new bis(tetrahydropyrrolo[3,4-b]carbazoles) were synthesized by Diels–Alder reactions of in-situ generated indole-2,3-quinodimethanes with a variety of bismaleimides as dienophiles and also by reaction of dianilines with a succinic acid anhydride group incorporated into a biscarbazole. In a special reaction a spermine linker was introduced. The new biscarbazoles represent potential DNA ligands for the development of new antitumor active drugs.

Arthrinium phaeospermum , Phoma cladoniicola and Ulocladium consortiale , New Olive Pathogens in Italy

2013

In recent years, leaf necrosis and twig dieback in the olive crop have been detected in Sicily (Italy). In this article, we identify the predominant fungal species associated with symptomatic leaves and twigs, using morphological features and DNA sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, as Alternaria alternata, Arthrinium phaeospermum, Phoma cladoniicola and Ulocladium consortiale. The pathogenicity of these four species was tested on olive plants cv. Biancolilla. All species were pathogenic on leaves, but only U. consortiale produced cortical lesions on twigs, thus suggesting its main role in the Olea europaea twig dieback. To our knowledge, this is the first report of A…

Diclofenac effects in sea urchin gametes and fertilization

2017

The drugs, agents for diseases therapy and prevention, are ubiquitous environmental pollutants. We analyzed a specific anti-inflammatory, diclofenac, present in soil and water. The study focused on Arbacia lixula (Linnaeus, 1758) and Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816) reproductive success. In A. lixula we identified the drug qualitative and quantitative fertilization effects, and if they affect the functional male and female gametes capacity; in P. lividus we analyzed the drug effects and the male and female gametes quantitative integrity. Through the High Liquid Chromatografy we quantitatively evaluated the real diclofenac contribution on A. lixula embryos and on A. lixula and P. lividu…

Effects of bioheapleaching technology utilizing metal mine emissions on fish in boreal freshwaters

2018

Emissions from metal mining activities are known to deteriorate the quality of aquatic habitats and impair the condition and reproductive potential of fish. Metal extraction by biomining methods has been considered to cause fewer emissions, but for example in Finland, the impacts of a bioheapleaching technology utilizing metal mine on the local freshwaters have been substantial. In this thesis, the impacts of the bioheapleaching mine emissions on three native fish species, brown trout (Salmo trutta) European perch (Perca fluviatilis) and whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus pallasi), were investigated. Manganese and sulphate concentrations have been elevated in the mining impacted waters, and in …

Operational sex ratio and resource defence as predictors of the mating system in European bitterling

2003

Operational sex ratio (OSR), the ratio of sexually active males to fertilizable females in a population, plays a central role in the theory of mating systems by predicting that the intensity of male–male competition and the degree of sexual selection increases as the OSR becomes increasingly male biased. At high values of OSR, however, resource defence theory predicts the breakdown of territoriality and a shift towards scramble competition with a decrease in sexual selection. The direction that correlations between OSR and resource competition and variance in mating success will take depends on the biology of the species of interest. We investigated the effects of male population density an…

Sperm kinematics and morphometric subpopulations analysis with CASA systems: a review

2019

Sperm kinematics and morphometric subpopulations analysis with CASA systems: a review. The subjective evaluation of seminal quality has given way to the use of objective assessment techniques by CASA technology (computer-assisted semen analysis). The application of principal components (PC) and clustering methods to reveal subpopulations of spermatozoa is a powerful tool to evaluate raw semen and processed cell suspensions, but not many researchers are aware of the technique. PC analysis is a multivariate statistical method that reduces the number of variables used in subsequent calculations used to describe the data. By integrating the original variables according to their coherence in a d…
