Disparités géographiques et convergence des régions européennes : une approche par l'économétrie spatiale

2002

The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the convergence process between European regions by taking into account spatial patterns of economic activities. First, with the help of literature reviews on theoretical and empirical analyses of growth and convergence and on economic geography models, we show in chapter 1 why geographic disparities should be introduced in the study of convergence between economies. Next, the spatial statistic and econometric tools allowing to reach this goal are detailed in chapter 2. Finally, three empirical studies of the convergence process in presence of geographic disparities are carried out. They are based on a sample for per capita GDP of 138 regions, belo…

Does EU cohesion policy work? Theory and evidence

2017

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of European Cohesion Policy in the regions of 12 EU countries in the period 1991–2008, on the basis of a spatial growth model, which allows for the identification of both direct and indirect effects of EU funds on GDP per worker growth. We find that “Objective 1” funds are characterized by strong spatial externalities and a positive and concave effect on the growth of GDP per worker, which reaches a peak at the ratio funds/GDP of approximately 3 percent and becomes non-significant after 4 percent. “Objective 2” and “Cohesion” funds have nonsignificant effects, while all the other funds exert a positive and significant effect, but their size is very lim…

The nature and impacts of environmental spillovers on housing prices: A spatial hedonic analysis

2014

Abstract: This paper investigates the spatial dimension of the environmental effects. We use recent advances in spatial econometrics to show that hedonic equations produce estimates to be differently interpreted as implicit prices according to spatial models. In particularly, the i mplicit price of housing attribute combines a feedback effect and a propagation effect and may be interpreted in terms of local or global spillovers. We drive an empirical study in the estuary of the Loire, a rural and urban area well occupied by various natural areas and more artificialized ones. We study various spatial interaction patterns to test the robustness of our estimates and we find that spatial depend…

Environmental spillovers and their impacts on housing prices: A spatial hedonic analysis

2015

This paper investigates the spatial dimension of environmental factors on housing prices. We develop spatial hedonic models to estimate the implicit prices of various environmental attributes. The spatial dimension can be interpreted in terms of local or global spillovers. We conduct an empirical study in the Loire estuary (France). We focus on natural areas and more artificialized ones (ocean frontage, wetlands, rivers, and noisy roads). We show that, depending on the spatial model used, the implicit price is more than just the estimated coefficient value and combines both a feedback effect and a propagation effect.

The European Regional Convergence Process, 1980-1995: Do Spatial Regimes and Spatial Dependence Matter?

2002

International audience; The authors show that spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity matter in the estimation of the ß-convergence process among 138 European regions over the 1980 to 1995 period. Using spatial econometrics tools, the authors detect both spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity in the form of structural instability across spatial convergence clubs. The estimation of the appropriate spatial regimes spatial error model shows that the convergence process is different across regimes. The authors also estimate a strongly significant spatial spillover effect: the average growth rate of per capita GDP of a given region is positively affected by the average growth rate of …

Trade, innovation and interdependence : a spatial econometric approach

2015

This thesis studies the consequences for innovation of international trade allowing for spatial interdependence. Indeed, the mechanisms through which international trade affects innovation are based on highlighting factors that, because they are the source of increasing returns, represent real engines of the growth. Yet, the accumulation process of these factors depends on effects which are constraints in space .First, trade flows by which technology is supposed to transmit between countries are interdependent. Second, the results highlighted in existing literature capture only the direct effect of trade on innovation. However, it is possible that a country benefits technology from an anoth…

Competing R&D Joint Ventures in Cournot oligopoly with spillovers

2014

This paper considers competition between R&D cartels, whereby prospective Cournot competitors coordinate their R&D decisions in order to maximize joint profit. It studies how R&D activity, aggregate profit, consumer surplus, and social welfare vary as the number of competing cartels varies. It also compares equilibrium with second best R&D, and discusses the policy implications of the results. The results show that the effects of R&D cartel competition depend on the welfare criterion adopted and on whether there are cooperative synergies or not.

International R&D spillovers in the multi-country Schumpeterian growth model

2007

en ligne : http://ungaro.u-bourgogne.fr/pages/Documents%20de%20travail/Economie/e2007-04.pdf; Document de travail du LEG 2007-04; This paper reconsiders the multi-country Schumpeterian growth model and its empirical implications. We first show that the model implies a spatial econometric reduced form. Indeed, the global interdependence implied by international R&D spillovers needs to betaken into account in the theoretical model as well as in the empirical model. The spatial econometric model we propose includes the neoclassical growth model as a particular case. We can therefore test explicitly the role of R&D investment in the long run growth processagainst the Solow growth model which is…
