Electronic and vibronic problems of nanosized mixed valence clusters: Advances and challenges

2013

Here we discuss the electronic and vibronic problems of mixed valency (MV) in molecular clusters which are of current interest in areas as diverse as solid-state chemistry, biochemistry, and molecular magnetism. Modern research in these areas is focused on the nanosized clusters at the border between classical and quantum scales and for this reason they are particularly difficult to study. First, we describe a general approach to the evaluation of the energy pattern of MV systems containing arbitrary number of localized spins and itinerant electrons with due account for the double exchange and other relevant interactions, like interelectronic Coulomb repulsion in instantly localized configu…

Spin canting in Re(IV) complexes: magnetic properties of [ReX4(bpym)] ( X = Cl and Br; bpym = 2,2′-bipyrimidine)

2008

The mononuclear complexes [ReCl4(bpym)] (1) and [ReBr4(bpym)] (2) (bpym = 2,2′-bipyrimidine) are weak ferromagnets. Magnetic ordering occurs below 7.0 (1) and 20.0 K (2) and good hysteresis loops are observed for the two compounds at 2.0 K. A spin-canting phenomenon, i.e., a non-strict linearity of the individual spins aligned in an anti-parallel way by intermolecular antiferromagnetic coupling occurring in many Re(IV) complexes, accounts for these magnetic features which are unusual in molecular solids such as 1 and 2.

Enforcement of a high-spin ground state for the first 3d heterometallic 12-metallacrown-4 complex.

2014

Cu(II)(DMF)2Cl2[12-MC(Fe(III)N(Shi))-4](DMF)4·2DMF was synthesized as the first heterometallic transition metal 12-MC-4 complex. The purposeful placement of specific metal ions in the different sites of the metallacrown attains the establishment of a high-spin ground state. Inducing the anticipated superior exchange interactions, the central Cu(II) guest ion averts the common mutual cancellation of the spins, as is observed in the corresponding homometallic compounds.

Entangled states and coherent interaction in resonant media

2014

The entanglement features of some solid state materials, as well as of particular systems of interacting atoms and fields are analyzed. A detailed investigation of the rich phase structure of low dimensional spin models, describing the natural mineral azurite and copper based coordination compounds, has revealed regimes with the most robust entanglement behavior. Using the dynamical system approach, the phase structure of some classical models on hierarchical (recursive) lattices has been also studied and, for the first time, the transition between chaotic and periodic regimes by means of tangent bifurcation has been detected.A detailed description of entanglement properties of three atoms …

Optimal control and Clairaut-Liouville metrics with applications

2014

The work of this thesis is about the study of the conjugate and cut loci of 2D riemannian or almost-riemannian metrics. We take the point of view of optimal control to apply the Pontryagin Maximum Principle in the purpose of characterize the extremals of the problem considered. We use geometric, numerical and integrability methods to study some Liouville and Clairaut-Liouville metrics on the sphere. In the degenerate case of revolution, the study of the ellipsoid uses geometric methods to fix the cut locus and the nature of the conjugate locus in the oblate and prolate cases. In the general case, extremals will have two distinct type of comportment which correspond to those observed in the r…

Optimal control of the inversion of two spins in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

2012

International audience; We investigate the optimal control of the inversion of two spin 1/2 particles in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. The two spins, which differ by their resonance offset, are controlled by the same radio frequency magnetic field. Using the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, we compute the optimal control sequence which allows to reach the target state in a given time, while minimizing the energy of the magnetic field. A comparison with the time-optimal solution for bounded control amplitude realizing the same control in the same time is made. An experimental illustration is done using techniques of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.

1D antiferromagnetism in spin‐alternating bimetallic chains

1990

The magnetic and thermal properties of the ordered bimetallic chain CoNi(EDTA)⋅6H2O in the very low‐temperature range are reported. The magnetic behavior does not exhibit the characteristic features of 1D ferrimagnets, but a continuous decrease of χmT towards zero at absolute zero. This 1D antiferromagnetic behavior results from an accidental compensation between the moments located at the two sublattices. This behavior, as well as the specific‐heat results, are modeled on the basis of an Ising‐exchange model that considers both alternating spins and Landé factors, and a zero‐field splitting on the Ni site. Solution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy on a nanostructured diamond chip

2017

We demonstrate nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of picoliter-volume solutions with a nanostructured diamond chip. Using optical interferometric lithography, diamond surfaces were nanostructured with dense, high-aspect-ratio nanogratings, enhancing the surface area by more than a factor of 15 over mm^2 regions of the chip. The nanograting sidewalls were doped with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers so that more than 10 million NV centers in a (25 micrometer)^2 laser spot are located close enough to the diamond surface (5 nm) to detect the NMR spectrum of 1 pL of fluid lying within adjacent nanograting grooves. The platform was used to perform 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy at room tempe…

Wide-Field Imaging of Superconductor Vortices with Electron Spins in Diamond

2018

Understanding the mechanisms behind high-$T_{c}$ Type-II superconductors (SC) is still an open task in condensed matter physics. One way to gain further insight into the microscopic mechanisms leading to superconductivity is to study the magnetic properties of the SC in detail, for example by studying the properties of vortices and their dynamics. In this work we describe a new method of wide-field imaging magnetometry using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond to image vortices in an yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) thin film. We demonstrate quantitative determination of the magnetic field strength of the vortex stray field, the observation of vortex patterns for different cooling fi…

Magnetism and EPR spectra of the two‐sublattice manganese chain Mn2(EDTA)⋅9H2O

1990

We report on the magnetic behavior and single‐crystal EPR spectra of the chain complex Mn2(EDTA)⋅9H2O characterized by two different alternating sites for the manganese ions. Magnetic susceptibility data are indicative of weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the manganese ions, showing a maximum of about 3 K. This behavior can be accurately described on the basis of a Heisenberg chain model that assumes classical spins, giving J/k=−0.72 K and g=2.0. The EPR spectra are typically low dimensional, with an angular dependence of the linewidth of the type (3 cos2 θ−1)n (n=4/3 or 2). Nevertheless, such a behavior cannot be reproduced from a one‐dimensional model with dipolar broad…
