Rise and fall of historic tram networks: Logistic approximation and discontinuous events

2019

Abstract A logistic approximation was used to describe, in terms of total length (L) and population (H) variables, the growth and decay of historic transportation systems. Three successive stages, separated for sharp discontinuities were detected for several European tramway and metro systems, corresponding to a fast initial growth followed by an intermediate step of slow growth and a final stage of rapid decay. A common, generalized behaviour was obtained in the L/H vs. H variations relative to critical values of L and H parameters defined from the maximum in the L/H ratio.

Support for a Vraconnian Stage between the Albian sensu stricto and the Cenomanian (Cretaceous System)

2008

The geological scale for the middle Cretaceous currently used throughout the world was proposed by Alcide d'Orbigny in the XIXth century between the years 1842 and 1847 and establishes the succession of stages as Albian, Cenomanian and Turonian. In 1868 Renevier proposed that a supplemental chronostratigraphic division be intercalated between the Albian and the Cenomanian: the Vraconnian stage. This term was not generally accepted and after a period when it was referred to by Breistroffer (1936) as a substage constituting the upper part of the Albian, as an equivalent of the Stoliczkaia dispar ammonite Zone, its abandonment was "recommended" by the Conference on the Lower Cretaceous held in…

Recent Changes in Student Life and Study ProcessesABSTRACT

1995

This research on university and university students was carried out during the 1980s at the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland. It is argued that the student years no longer constitute a ‘classically’ academic life stage; instead, the modem student's life is divided between study and part‐time employment. The uncertain economic situation and social immaturity of today's students hampers their identity formation. Student culture has lost its independence and vitality, and the basic structures of students’ life‐world have fragmented so that their lives no longer revolve around the university. Moreover, curricularization in universities has instrumentalized the study process and the relation o…

Hidradenitis suppurativa in surgeons' practice: Prevalence and treatment approach according to the Hurley stage in Latvia

2020

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurrent, debilitating, and frequently misdiagnosed inflammatory skin disease that often requires surgical intervention. To assess the prevalence of HS patients in surgeons' practice and surgeons' approach to treating HS patients, we created a self-administered, Hurley stage-based questionnaire that was distributed during the Latvian Association of Surgeons meeting. Of the total 60 questionnaires distributed, 56 (93%) were collected and 53 (88%) of them were considered valid. Overall, 73.6% of the surgeons confirmed having seen patients with chronic inflamed suppurative lesions in the skin folds during their practice. Median reported number of HS…

Characterization of activated sludge settling properties with a sludge collapse-acceleration stage

2019

Abstract The sedimentability of the activated sludge can be affected by the presence of a large variety of coagulants and polymers from a previous physical-chemical process. In this paper, the activated sludge settling process in industrial wastewater treatment plants where the sludge does not settle in a conventional way is studied. The two observed constant hindered settling velocity stages and the instant the intermediate sludge acceleration period occurs are described. A variation of the Richardson and Zaki model is used to characterize the two stages of constant settling velocity. The concentration of suspended solids, where a sudden decrease of hindered settling velocity was observed,…

A blind trilobite with Baltic affinities from Cambrian Series 3 of the Iberian Chains, Spain, and its stratigraphical and palaeobiogeographical signi…

2015

Three cranidia of a conocoryphid trilobite are described from the lower Caesaraugustan Regional Stage (upper part of provisional Cambrian Stage 5 within Cambrian Series 3) in the Iberian Chains, Spain. The material is from the upper part of the Mansilla Formation and the base of the overlying Murero Formation. It closely resembles Bailiella tenuicincta (Linnarsson, 1879), which has previously been described from the Ptychagnostus gibbus (Cambrian Stage 5) and lower P. atavus zones (lower Drumian Stage) of Baltica (Sweden and Bornholm), and from the P. atavus Zone of West Avalonia (Newfoundland). The record of B. cf. tenuicincta from the Mediterranean margin of West Gondwana provides additio…

Exploring the Link between ICT and Development in the Context of Developing Countries : A Literature Review

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.ejisdc.org/ojs2/index.php/ejisdc/article/view/1332. Open Access The article contributes to the ongoing discussion on relating information and communication technology (ICT) to development (D). The quest to relate ICT to D is a topic of open deliberation and critical scrutiny in ICT4D research communities. To enhance the understanding in this regard, we conducted a literature review. The review examines 80 articles to identify various development theories and the role of technologies in the development process. While scanning the …

Early Cretaceous termites in amber from northern Spain (Isoptera)

2020

Abstract Two virtually complete termites in Lower Cretaceous amber from the Penacerrada I outcrop, Spain, are described and figured, representing the most well-preserved Isoptera yet discovered from the Albian stage. The material is described as Ithytermes montoyai gen. et sp. nov., and is similar in many details to the slightly younger Krishnatermes yoddha Engel, Barden, and Grimaldi from northern Myanmar amber. Given the presence of distinct soldiers in this grade of Cretaceous termites, it is likely that I. montoyai also exhibited such a tripartite caste system. In addition to the type material of I. montoyai, two fragmentary termites are recorded for the first time in Albian amber from …
