We report on the usefulness of digital holographic microscopy (DHM) for the assessment of human neutrophil differentiation from myeloid cells. The cell and nuclear regions have been designated by image segmentation of the optical phase function, and the changes of the cell nucleus morphology in relation to the whole cell morphology have been examined during the process of granulocytic differentiation into mature neutrophils in PLB-985 cell line. Nucleus phase volume and circularity and the ratios between the nucleus and the cell projected area and volume provide a reliable set of parameters to characterize the maturation process. A transmembrane protein CD133 has been implicated as a marker of stem-like glioma cells and predictor for therapeutic response in malignant brain tumours. CD133 expression is commonly evaluated by using antibodies specific for the AC133 epitope located in one of the extracellular domains of membrane-bound CD133. There is conflicting evidence regarding the significance of the AC133 epitope as a marker for identifying stem-like glioma cells and predicting the degree of malignancy in glioma cells. Data on the fetal development of the human amygdala is reviewed with special reference to major ontogenetic events. In the fifth gestational month, the inferior portion of the amygdala reveals cell-dense columns merging with the ganglionic eminence (proliferative zone) in Nissl-stained sections. These columns contain vimentin-positive fibers and can therefore be regarded as migrational routes. In the sixth and seventh months, distinct reorganization of the cytoarchitectonics takes place. Abstract Metallothioneins (MTs) are metal-inducible proteins that can be used as biomarkers of metal exposure. In mussels two families of MT isoforms (MT10 and MT20) have been characterized. In this study, mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were exposed to 200 ppb Cd and 40 ppb Cu for 2 and 9 days to characterize the tissue and isoform specificity of metal-induced MT expression. Non-radioactive in situ hybridization demonstrated that both MT isoforms were mainly transcribed in digestive tubule epithelial cells, especially in basophilic cells. Water contamination is one of the main problems of modern society, and scientific research is continuously involved in identifying solutions able to preserve this valuable source. In this context, we characterized novel ionogels formed by organic salts with different anions. In particular, they show self-strengthening behavior, a quite unusual property for supramolecular gels, and they also exhibit a good load-bearing capacity. These ionogels are able to remove cationic dyes from wastewater. Thanks to their properties, they can be used in different apparatuses like dialysis membranes and as loading in adsorption columns. Studies of neuronal activity are often performed using neurons from rodents less than 2 months of age due to the technical difficulties associated with increasing connective tissue and decreased neuronal viability that occur with age. Here, we describe a methodology for the dissociation of healthy hypothalamic neurons from adult-aged mice. The ability to study neurons from adult-aged mice allows the use of disease models that manifest at a later age and might be more developmentally accurate for certain studies. Chinese hamster cell lines carrying an amplified CAD region were selected from V79,B7 cells by their resistance to N-phosphonacetyl-L-aspartate (PALA). In one of the selected cell lines, SP PALA (inf1) (supR) L, an acrocentric chromosome with abnormally elongated q arms was identified as a marker for the PALA-resistant phenotype. The marker chromosome carried a homogeneously staining region close to a telomeric nucleolar organizer region. We have recently shown that synoviocytes and extracellular matrices exhibit distinct patterns of carbohydrate expression. Their biological relevance is however not known. The purpose of the present study was to find out whether human synovial tissue would also show a specific receptor pattern for complex sugar molecules. Endogenous lectins were displayed by means of biotinylated neoglycoproteins and sulfated polysaccharides in paraffin-embedded material or cryosections.
