Female survivors’ experiences of authorities’ actions in cases of partner stalking

2020

Previous studies have shown that civil authorities fail to understand the nature of stalking and the harmful consequences it causes victims. The aim of this study was to investigate how the victims of partner stalking had perceived the actions of civil authorities and the stalking investigation process. The data were drawn from conversations among members of an internet-based peer support group for female victims of partner stalking. We identified four main categories of victims’ experiences pertaining to authorities’ actions and the investigation process: authorities’ problems in dealing with stalking, dissatisfaction with the investigation process, trust in the authorities and expectation…

Mitochondrial redox signaling: Interaction of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species with other sources of oxidative stress.

2014

Significance: Oxidative stress is a well established hallmark of cardiovascular disease and there is strong evidence for a causal role of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) therein. Recent Advances: Improvement of cardiovascular complications by genetic deletion of RONS producing enzymes and overexpression of RONS degrading enzymes proved the involvement of these species in cardiovascular disease at a molecular level. Vice versa, overexpression of RONS producing enzymes as well as deletion of antioxidant enzymes was demonstrated to aggravate cardiovascular complications. Critical Issues: With the present overview we present and discuss different pathways how mitochondrial RONS inte…

Multiplexing of encrypted data using fractal masks

2012

In this Letter, we present to the best of our knowledge a new all-optical technique for multiple-image encryption and multiplexing, based on fractal encrypting masks. The optical architecture is a joint transform correlator. The multiplexed encrypted data are stored in a photorefractive crystal. The fractal parameters of the key can be easily tuned to lead to a multiplexing operation without cross talk effects. Experimental results that support the potential of the method are presented.

Exploring a regulatory role for mast cells: 'MCregs'?

2010

Regulatory cells can mould the fate of the immune response by direct suppression of specific subsets of effector cells, or by redirecting effectors against invading pathogens and infected or neoplastic cells. These functions have been classically, although not exclusively, ascribed to different subsets of T cells. Recently, mast cells have been shown to regulate physiological and pathological immune responses, and thus to act at the interface between innate and adaptive immunity assuming different functions and behaviors at discrete stages of the immune response. Here, we focus on these poorly defined, and sometimes apparently conflicting, functions of mast cells.

Extended View Angle Integral Imaging 3D Display using Smart Pseudoscopic-to-orthoscopic Conversion with Head Tracking

2016

We overview a head tracking integral imaging display using the smart pseudoscopic-to-orthoscopic conversion method. The crosstalk for a large viewing angle in integral imaging is eliminated by generating a new set of elemental images.

An overview of head tracking integral imaging three-dimensional display using smart pseudoscopic-to-orthoscopic conversion

2017

We overview a previously reported head tracking integral imaging three-dimensional (3D) display to extend viewing angle accommodated to a viewer's position without the crosstalk phenomenon. A head detection system is applied to obtain the head position and rotation of a viewer, and a new set of elemental images is then computed using the smart pseudoscopic-to-orthoscopic conversion (SPOC) method for head tracking 3D display. Experimental results validate the proposed method for high quality 3D display with large viewing angle.

Crosstalk of the plasma contact system with bacteria.

2012

Activation of the plasma contact system triggers several cascade systems such as the kallikrein-kinin system, the intrinsic pathway of coagulation, the classical complement cascade and the fibrinolytic system. Recent studies have shown a critical role of the contact system for arterial and venous thrombus formation and thromboembolic disease. In contrast, the function of the contact system for host-defense reactions and its physiological functions have remained enigmatic. Experimental animal studies and clinical data have linked the contact system to bacterial infections with implications for sepsis disease. The present review summarizes the role of the contact system and its activation for…

Extracellular Vesicles From Liver Progenitor Cells Downregulates Fibroblast Metabolic Activity and Increase the Expression of Immune-Response Related…

2021

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) mediate cell-to-cell crosstalk whose content can induce changes in acceptor cells and their microenvironment. MLP29 cells are mouse liver progenitor cells that release EVs loaded with signaling cues that could affect cell fate. In the current work, we incubated 3T3-L1 mouse fibroblasts with MLP29-derived EVs, and then analyzed changes by proteomics and transcriptomics. Results showed a general downregulation of protein and transcript expression related to proliferative and metabolic routes dependent on TGF-beta. We also observed an increase in the ERBB2 interacting protein (ERBIN) and Cxcl2, together with an induction of ribosome biogenesis and interferon-relate…

Injured Axons Instruct Schwann Cells to Build Constricting Actin Spheres to Accelerate Axonal Disintegration

2019

Summary: After a peripheral nerve lesion, distal ends of injured axons disintegrate into small fragments that are subsequently cleared by Schwann cells and later by macrophages. Axonal debris clearing is an early step of the repair process that facilitates regeneration. We show here that Schwann cells promote distal cut axon disintegration for timely clearing. By combining cell-based and in vivo models of nerve lesion with mouse genetics, we show that this mechanism is induced by distal cut axons, which signal to Schwann cells through PlGF mediating the activation and upregulation of VEGFR1 in Schwann cells. In turn, VEGFR1 activates Pak1, leading to the formation of constricting actomyosin…
