Higher Fluid Balance Increases the Risk of Death From Sepsis: Results From a Large International Audit

We investigated the possible influence of early fluid balance on outcome in a large international database of ICU patients with sepsis. DESIGN: Observational cohort study. Abstract Noradrenaline, 1 μm, induced a sustained contractile response in rat isolated aorta in the presence and in the absence of extracellular Ca2+. After depleting the noradrenaline-sensitive intracellular Ca2+ stores, an increase in the basal tone of the aorta was observed during the incubation period in the presence of Ca2+ and in the absence of the agonist. We have tested the possible pathways through which Ca2+ enters the cell to refill the previously depleted Ca2+ pools, a process that is accompanied by an increase in tension. Recording simultaneously in vitro the changes of endoluminal pressure (index of circular muscle activity) and isometric tension (index of longitudinal muscle activity), we examined the mechanisms responsible for the apamin-sensitive relaxant and contractile responses induced by protease-activated receptor (PAR)-1 and PAR-2 activating peptides, SFLLRN-NH2 and SLIGRL-NH2, respectively, in rat colon. Modulation of NMDA receptor function by cyclic AMP in cerebellar neurones in culture

The signal transduction pathways involved in NMDA receptor modulation by other receptors remain unclear. cAMP could be involved in this modulation. The aim of this work was to analyse the contribution of cAMP to NMDA receptor modulation in cerebellar neurones in culture. Forskolin increases cAMP and results in increased intracellular calcium and cGMP that are prevented by blocking NMDA receptors. Similar effects were induced by two cAMP analogues, indicating that cAMP leads to NMDA receptor activation. Hyperammonemia is responsible for most neurological alterations in patients with hepatic encephalopathy by mechanisms that remain unclear. Hyperammonemia alters phosphorylation of neuronal protein kinase C (PKC) substrates and impairs NMDA receptor-associated signal transduction. The aim of this work was to analyse the effects of hyperammonemia on the amount and intracellular distribution of PKC isoforms and on translocation of each isoform induced by NMDA receptor activation in cerebellar neurons. Determinants of Individual Investment Decisions in Investment-Based Crowdfunding

We investigate determinants of investment decisions in investment-based (equity and real estate) crowdfunding, using a novel investment-, investor- and campaign-level database. We find that this market is a man's world, with nearly 93% of investments made by men. Consistent with behavioral and finance theories, we find that women invest less in the riskiest investments but more in safer ones. Further analyses show that these findings are better explained by differences in risk aversion than differences in overconfidence between men and women. The THESEUS space mission concept: science case, design and expected performances

THESEUS is a space mission concept aimed at exploiting Gamma-Ray Bursts for investigating the early Universe and at providing a substantial advancement of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics. These goals will be achieved through a unique combination of instruments allowing GRB and X-ray transient detection over a broad field of view (more than 1sr) with 0.5¿1 arcmin localization, an energy band extending from several MeV down to 0.3¿keV and high sensitivity to transient sources in the soft X-ray domain, as well as on-board prompt (few minutes) follow-up with a 0.7¿m class IR telescope with both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. A comparison of the transcriptome of Drosophila melanogaster in response to entomopathogenic fungus, ionizing radiation, starvation and cold shock

Background The molecular mechanisms that determine the organism's response to a variety of doses and modalities of stress factors are not well understood. Results We studied effects of ionizing radiation (144, 360 and 864 Gy), entomopathogenic fungus (10 and 100 CFU), starvation (16 h), and cold shock (+4, 0 and -4°C) on an organism's viability indicators (survival and locomotor activity) and transcriptome changes in the Drosophila melanogaster model. All stress factors but cold shock resulted in a decrease of lifespan proportional to the dose of treatment. However, stress-factors affected locomotor activity without correlation with lifespan.
