Electric-field-induced symmetry breaking of angular momentum distribution in atoms

We report the observation of alignment to orientation conversion in the 7,9 D3/2states of Cs in the presence of an electric field without the influence of magnetic fields or collisions. Initial alignment of angular momentum was created by two-step excitation with linearly polarized light. The appearance of transverse orientation was confirmed by the observation of circularly polarized fluorescence. We present measured signals and compare them with the results of a theoretical model based on the optical Bloch equations. The effect is odd under time reversal and should be taken into account in searches for an electron electric dipole moment.

Anomalies in radiation-collisional kinetics of Rydberg atoms induced by the effects of dynamical chaos and the double Stark resonance

Radiative and collisional constants of excited atoms contain the matrix elements of the dipole transitions and when they are blocked one can expect occurring a number of interesting phenomena in radiation-collisional kinetics. In recent astrophysical studies of IR emission spectra it was revealed a gap in the radiation emitted by Rydberg atoms ($RA$) with values of the principal quantum number of $n\approx10$. Under the presence of external electric fields a rearrangement of $RA$ emission spectra is possible to associate with manifestations of the Stark effect. A new approach to determination of the asymmetry parameter of Stark-broadened isolated spectral lines

A new approach to evaluation of asymmetry parameters of Stark-broadened isolated spectral lines is presented. The procedure is discussed on the example of the N I line at λ = 9822.75 A. Line shape measurements were performed using a wall-stabilized arc, operated at atmospheric pressure. The radiation of the plasma, emitted from homogeneous plasma layers in end-on direction, was measured using a grating spectrometer equipped with a two-dimensional CCD detector. Griem-like profiles, convoluted with the corresponding Doppler and apparatus profiles, were fitted to experimental data. Development of the Dipole Moment and Polarizability Operators of Octahedral Molecules

We present a development of the dipole moment and polarizability operators of octahedral molecules, using a tensorial formalism analogous to the one developed for tetrahedral molecules. These operators are involved in the calculation of the intensities of rovibrational transitions as well as in the calculation of the Stark effect. Expressions for the matrix elements are derived. Two simplified models for the study of the Stark effect in such molecules are also proposed and discussed. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.

Lateral induced dipole moment and polarizability of excitons in a ZnO single quantum disk

2013

The lateral Stark shift of an exciton confined in a single ZnO quantum thin disk of radius R was calculated using a variational approach within the two bands effective mass approximation. It is shown that the exciton has a non negligible induced dipole moment when an external electric field is applied mainly for electron-hole separation below to the 3D excitonic Bohr radius. The behavior of the exciton lateral Stark shift proves the existence of an important correlation between the polarizability and the induced dipole moment.

On the anomalous Stark effect in a thin disc-shaped quantum dot

The effect of a lateral external electric field F on an exciton ground state in an InAs disc-shaped quantum dot has been studied using a variational method within the effective mass approximation. We consider that the radial dimension of the disc is very large compared to its height. This situation leads to separating the excitonic Hamiltonian into two independent parts: the lateral confinement which corresponds to a two-dimensional harmonic oscillator and an infinite square well in the growth direction. Calculations of Stark-broadened line shapes in phase-conjugate degenerate four-wave mixing laser spectroscopy

The Stark-broadened line shapes for phase-conjugate degenerate four-wave mixing (PCDFWM) laser spectroscopy are studied. The line profiles are calculated for high-density $({N}_{e}g{10}^{21}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{m}}^{\ensuremath{-}3})$ plasma conditions and for different contributions of the Doppler broadening. Calculations are performed in the limit of low laser intensities using the perturbation approach. The theoretical model takes into account the Stark effect together with the ion dynamics, the electron collisions, and the Doppler effect.
