10-Year Clinical Experience With 18F-Choline PET/CT: An Italian Multicenter Retrospective Assessment of 3343 Patients.

2020

Purpose The primary aim of this multicenter retrospective analysis is to examine the role of(18)F-choline PET/CT as a diagnostic tool for staging and restaging prostate cancer (PCa) in a large population in the light of 10 years of clinical experience. A secondary aim of the study is to produce data on the predictors of a positive(18)F-choline PET/CT result in the setting of PCa primaries and biochemical recurrences. Materials and Methods This multicenter retrospective cohort study is based on data collected by 9 Italian nuclear medicine departments. Between October 2008 and September 2019, 3343 men underwent(18)F-choline PET/CT scans before receiving definitive treatments for a primary PCa…

Design, characterization and in vitro evaluation of 5-aminosalicylic acid loaded N-succinyl-chitosan microparticles for colon specific delivery

2011

The objective of this study was to prepare NS-chitosan microparticles for the delivery of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) to the colon. Microparticles can spread out over a large area of colon allowing a more effective local efficacy of 5-ASA. N-Succinyl-chitosan was chosen as carrier system because of its excellent pharmaceutical properties in colon drug targeting such as poor solubility in acid environment, biocompatibility, mucoadhesive properties, and low toxicity. It was prepared by introducing succinic group into chitosan N-terminals of the glucosamine units. 5-ASA loaded NS-chitosan microparticles were prepared using spray-drying. As a control, a matrix obtained by freeze-drying techni…

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of the Initial Adsorption Stages of Fibrinogen on Mica and Graphite Surfaces.

2015

Fibrinogen, a blood glycoprotein of vertebrates, plays an essential role in blood clotting by polymerizing into fibrin when activated. Upon adsorption on material surfaces, it also contributes to determine their biocompatibility and has been implicated in the onset of thrombosis and inflammation at medical implants. Here we present the first fully atomistic simulations of the initial stages of the adsorption process of fibrinogen on mica and graphite surfaces. The simulations reveal a weak adsorption on mica that allows frequent desorption and reorientation events. This adsorption is driven by electrostatic interactions between the protein and the silicate surface as well as the counterion …

Influence of Surface Charge and Polymer Coating on Internalization and Biodistribution of Polyethylene Glycol-Modified Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

2015

International audience; The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the surface charge and coating of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs) on their in vitro and in vivo behaviors. Neutral and negatively-charged PEG-based SPIONs were synthesized and compared to Resovist (R), a carboxydextran-based SPION currently used in clinics. Their cytotoxicity, cell internalization, and potential as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging were assessed. Neutral pegylated SPIONs were internalized less readily by the reticuloendothelial system and showed a lower uptake by the liver, compared to negatively-charged SPIONs (with carboxydextran and PEG). These results sugge…

Nonlinear mode coupling in a birefringent microstructured fiber tuned by externally applied hydrostatic pressure

2015

We studied the effect of power coupling between two linearly polarized modes, which occurs during nonlinear propagation in an externally tuned birefringent microstructured fiber. We investigated both experimentally and numerically the possibility of measuring hydrostatic pressure by tracking the nonlinear power coupling between the fiber polarization modes. We analyzed the impact of the fiber length exposed to pressure and the input polarization state on the coupling efficiency. We also revealed that the observation of nonlinear power coupling between the polarization modes is limited by linear coupling occurring in the leadthroughs to the pressure chamber. Moreover, we demonstrated that th…

Coherent Manipulation of Polarization in Mixed-Valence Compounds by Electric Pulse via Landau–Zener Transitions

2012

In this contribution, we predict and theoretically investigate the effects of the electric field pulse in mixed valence (MV) dimers. These systems exhibit bistability with a large internal dipole moment mediated by the itinerant electron trapped by the vibronic coupling. In this sense, they are similar to single molecular magnets (SMMs) that are bistable systems possessing large long-living magnetization and exhibiting Landau−Zener (LZ) transitions. We propose a scheme for a controllable LZ tunnelling in MV systems that provides also a possibility to control the dipole moment of a dimeric MV unit. It is supposed that the static electric field initially polarizes the system, and then the uni…

ERK1 and ERK2 activation modulates diet-induced obesity in mice

2017

IF 3.112; International audience; Obesity is a worldwide problem, and dietary lipids play an important role in its pathogenesis. Recently, Erk1 knock-out (ERK1(-/-)) mice have been shown to exhibit low preference for dietary fatty acids. Hence, we maintained Erk1(-/-) mice on a high-fat diet (HFD) to assess the implication of this mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase in obesity. The Erk1(-/-) mice, fed the HFD, were more obese than wild-type (WT) animals, fed the same diet. Erk1(-/-) obese mice gained more fat and liver mass than WT obese animals. No difference was observed in daily food and energy intake in HFD-fed both group of animals. However, feed efficiency was higher in Erk1(-/-) t…

Insulin resistance and atrial fibrillation (from the Framingham Heart Study)

2011

Diabetes mellitus and obesity are increasing in prevalence and are associated with an elevated risk of atrial fibrillation (AF). Given the aging of the United States population, AF is projected to concomitantly increase in prevalence in the upcoming decades. Both diabetes and obesity are associated with insulin resistance. Whether insulin resistance is an intermediate step for the development of AF is uncertain. We hypothesized that insulin resistance is associated with an increased risk of incident AF. We examined the association of insulin resistance with incident AF using multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis adjusting for the established AF risk factors (i.e., age, g…

Cardiorespiratory Fitness, Physical Activity, and Insulin Resistance in Children

2020

Purpose Few studies have investigated the independent and joint associations of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and body fat percentage (BF%) with insulin resistance in children. We investigated the independent and combined associations of CRF and BF% with fasting glycemia and insulin resistance and their interactions with physical activity (PA) and sedentary time among 452 children age 6 to 8 yr. Methods We assessed CRF with a maximal cycle ergometer exercise test and used allometrically scaled maximal power output (Wmax) for lean body mass (LM) and body mass (BM) as measures of CRF. The BF% and LM were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, fasting glycemia by fasting plasma glucos…
