Combination chemotherapy with mitomycin C, vindesine and melphalan for refractory metastatic breast cancer.

A combination of mitomycin C, vindesine and melphalan was administered to 33 patients with heavily pretreated refractory breast cancer. The overall response rate was 27% with a mean duration of more than 10.2 months. A stabilization with a mean duration of 5.1 months was seen in 56% of cases, while 20% of patients progressed. Gastrointestinal toxicity, mostly grade 1 or 2 nausea/vomiting was seen in 85% of cases, grade 1 or 2 leukopenia in 60% of patients, and grade 1 or 2 thrombocytopenia in 42%. Memory storage in the brain relies on mechanisms acting on time scales from minutes, for long-term synaptic potentiation, to days, for memory consolidation. During such processes, neural circuits distinguish synapses relevant for forming a long-term storage, which are consolidated, from synapses of short-term storage, which fade. How time scale integration and synaptic differentiation is simultaneously achieved remains unclear. We study the response of single nanosized spherical colloids in electrolyte solution to an alternating electric field (AC field) by computer simulations. We use a coarse-grained mesoscopic simulation approach that accounts in full for hydrodynamic and electrostatic interactions as well as for thermal fluctuations. The solvent is modeled as a fluid of single Dissipative Particle Dynamics (DPD) beads, and the colloidal particle is modeled as a rigid body made of DPD beads. Immunocytochemical typification of mesothelial cells in effusions: in vivo and in vitro models.

We have performed immunocytochemical, immunoelectron microscopy, Western blot, and culture techniques using monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin, vimentin, and desmin on 17 benign and 20 malignant effusions of pleural and ascitic origin. Triple coexpression of these three antigens was observed in benign reactive mesothelial cells as well as in one case of mesothelioma. All metastatic adenocarcinoma cells were consistently negative to desmin and positive to cytokeratin and vimentin. Present results were helpful to distinguish reactive and malignant mesothelioma from metastatic carcinoma cells in effusions.

Nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) is a rare condition that most often accompanies a malignant disease and involves a hypercoagulable state. We report the incidental finding of a rare case of an NBTE affecting the tricuspid valve in a patient with metastatic pancreatic carcinoma complicated by severe venous and arterial thromboembolisms.

Melanoma is an aggressive skin cancer form with a grave prognosis. Current results suggest that oncolytic virus treatment of melanoma has a high therapeutic potential. ECHO-7 (Rigvir) is the first oncolytic virus registered in Latvia. A female patient was diagnosed with stage IIIB melanoma in December 2012, over 9.4 years ago. After the first excision and re-excision, the patient had several recurrences and disease progressions. After the patient had received surgical treatment in 2014, ECHO-7 virus oncolytic virotherapy was started. In this paper we revisit the dual approach to comparative statics in competitive markets, allowing for the essential results to arise from a comprehensive and unified framework. We study, for both the long-run and the short-run, the response of all the endogenous variables to price factor changes in a way that captures the outputprice effects arising from market-firm interactions. We show that it is necessary a richer characterization of the nature of factors with respect to output, connected with marginal cost and output demand elasticities, for completely determining such responses.
