A new genus and species of asteraceae-inhabiting aphid (hemiptera: aphididae) from Costa Rica and Mexico

2013

P. 323-331 Ucrimyzus villalobosi Mier Durante & Pérez Hidalgo gen. n., sp. n. (Hemiptera: Aphididae: Macrosiphini) are described from apterous and alate viviparous females collected on species of genera Bidens, Schkuhria, Senecio and Stevia (Asteraceae: Asteroideae) in Costa Rica and Mexico. Principal components analysis (PCA) was done to verify that the studied aphids belong to a single species regardless of their geographical origin or host plant. Molecular analyses were carried out on the sequences of a fragment of the mitochondrial gene encoding for cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) and of a fragment of the nuclear gene encoding elongation factor 1α (EF1α). The taxonomic discussion t…

Ligand Diversity of Human and Chimpanzee CYP3A4: Activation of Human CYP3A4 by Lithocholic Acid Results from Positive SelectionS⃞

2009

For currently unknown reasons, the evolution of CYP3A4 underwent acceleration in the human lineage after the split from chimpanzee. We investigated the significance of this event by comparing Escherichia coli-expressed CYP3A4 from humans, chimpanzee, and their most recent common ancestor. The expression level of chimpanzee CYP3A4 was ∼50% of the human CYP3A4, whereas ancestral CYP3A4 did not express in E. coli. Steady-state kinetic analysis with 7-benzyloxyquinoline, 7-benzyloxy-4-(trifluoromethyl)coumarin (7-BFC), and testosterone showed no significant differences between human and chimpanzee CYP3A4. Upon addition of α-naphthoflavone (25 μM), human CYP3A4 showed a slightly decreased substr…

Degeneration of moulting glands in male crickets

1998

The degeneration of the prothoracic glands of the male cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus, was analyzed by using an in vitro assay for ecdysteroid release from the moulting glands in last instar nymphs as well as in adult animals, and correlated with light and transmission electron microscopy. Apoptosis was examined by the TUNEL-reaction. The ability to synthesize ecdysteroids reached a peak at the 8th day of the last larval instar, identified as the moulting peak. After adult ecdysis it decreased to barely measurable values. Prothoracic gland degeneration was initiated at the time of the moulting peak, characterized by TUNEL positive reactions, nuclear and cytoplasmatic condensation, a striking …

Neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis: novel treatment strategies.

2012

In recent years it has become clear that the neuronal compartment already plays an important role early in the pathology of multiple sclerosis (MS). Neuronal injury in the course of chronic neuroinflammation is a key factor in determining long-term disability in patients. Viewing MS as both inflammatory and neurodegenerative has major implications for therapy, with CNS protection and repair needed in addition to controlling inflammation. Here, the authors' review recently elucidated molecular insights into inflammatory neuronal/axonal pathology in MS and discuss the resulting options regarding neuroprotective and regenerative treatment strategies.

Determination of ketosteroid hormones in meat by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry and derivatization chemistry.

2015

A method for the determination and quantification of ketosteroid hormones in meat by mass spectrometry, based on the derivatization of the carbonyl moiety of steroids by O-methylhydroxylamine, is presented. The quantitative assay is performed by means of multiple-reaction-monitoring (MRM) scan mode and using the corresponding labelled species, obtained by reaction with d 3-methoxylamine, as internal standard. The accuracy of the method was established by evaluating artificially spiked samples, obtaining values in the range 90-110%. Recovery tests were performed on blank matrix samples spiked with non-natural steroids including trenbolone and melengestrol acetate. The latter experiment revea…

Fokal-noduläre Hyperplasie der Leber bei 930 Patienten

1987

Analysis of 930 patients with focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver (FNH), including 23 seen by the authors, showed the following results: 82.2% of patients were female, 37.8% of these had taken female steroidal hormones. There was no preference for a particular lobe of the liver. 57.7% of FNH were subcapsular, 33.7% were intrahepatic and 8.8% were pedunculated. Average size was 5.9 cm, 80.8% of the patients were asymptomatic. In 93.5% (115 out of 123) a space-occupying lesion in the liver could be demonstrated by sonography. In 13%, second or multiple tumours were missed by sonography. CT without enhancement demonstrated FNH in 90.4% (94 out of 104 patients). A rapid, marked increase in d…

Adrenal myelolipoma associated with adenoma

2004

The association of an adrenal myelolipoma with a non-functioning adenoma is very rare. Herein, we report on such a case in an asymptomatic 64-year-old woman. To the best of our knowledge, there is only one other case of non-functioning adrenocortical adenoma associated with myelolipoma in the same gland. Furthermore, only two other adenomas (mineral corticoids and corticosteroid producing tumors) associated with myelolipomas have been reported, and both myelolipomas were less than 1 cm in size. In conclusion, the 8.5 cm myelolipoma in our case is the largest compared with the three previously reported ones.

Preparation and recrystallization behavior of spray-dried co-amorphous naproxen–indomethacin

2016

To improve the dissolution properties and the physical stability of amorphous active pharmaceutical ingredients, small molecule stabilizing agents may be added to prepare co-amorphous systems. The objective of the study was to investigate if spray-drying allows the preparation of co-amorphous drug-drug systems such as naproxen-indomethacin and to examine the influence of the process conditions on the resulting initial sample crystallinity and the recrystallization behavior of the drug(s). For this purpose, the process parameters inlet temperature and pump feed rate were varied according to a 2(2) factorial design and the obtained samples were analyzed with X-ray powder diffractometry and Fo…
